Absolutely one of my favorite Japanese markets. I wish there were more like these in IL. Ive been going here since I was little and always looked forward to the drive there. The bakery, the book store and the food court are my top 3 to really enjoy the experience shopping and eating. Definitely recommend going there if you have enjoy or love like myself Japanese culture.
So many good things about this place it is so hard to write a review. Definitely you want to start with the grocery store and check out of the selection of premium Japanese items as well as box sushi and do daily fresh baked bread. Inside of Mitsuwa marketplace there is also one of the best Japanese food courts in the USA you can get a assortment of Japanese cuisine‘s such as Ramen Macha desserts and kebabs.
The shelves never seem to be fully stocked when Im here. I might just be going at bad times. But for 3 of the shelves to be pretty much empty at any given time doesnt seem like a good sign. But the produce is always very good. And the little food court is very cute, albeit crowded at times.
Wide variety food foods in grocery store. Fresh bakery goods and sushi. Eat in/ carry out prepared food/drink market. My daughter loves this place!
Really awesome food court and great selection of Japanese products. They carry most of what a Japanese grocery store has and they have many crazy snacks so it is often overrun with blue-haired teenagers. Its pretty expensive but youre paying for the import. I come all the time regardless.
This is the closest you will get to Tokyo in the Midwest. If you truly enjoy Japanese culture in cuisine, and you are anywhere in the Chicagoland area, Mitsuwa is a MUST visit! The Food Court is the heartbeat of the store. The crowd favorite is the Ramen place. No matter how long the line, rest assured - its worth the wait!
After being stationed in Okinawa for 4 years this was a welcome site! I adored being able to come in and have the same cultural hospitality that Japan is known for. Everything about this store is amazing!!!
This place is absolutely amazing. All the Asian food in the market is so wonderful. Such a large selection of anything you could want. The food court is fantastic. So many options, and so well priced. And the bookstore at the front is fantastic. So much manga and figures. And various other anime products. You have to check this place out.
Great Japanese Market with a variety of Asian goods. Meat section also has high quality imported Wagyu meat. Other stores inside include food stalls, a bakery, and a book store.
My daughter took me to Mitsuwa after telling me about it several times. It lived up to her hype, and we had a wonderful afternoon browsing all the aisles, visiting the bakery, and grabbing a few bowls of udon. All the meat, seafood and produce looked so clean and fresh, and I wish I my Japanese mom were still around so I could take her. Instead, Ill have to take my grandchildren to shop and grab some gyoza.
Recently moved back from Japan after living there for a few years and came to Chicago for the first time. I was shocked when I walked in! It felt like I was transported back to my local supermarket in the town I lived in. Definitely the perfect place to get the basic needs for Japanese recipes. The bakery has all the kinds of foods you’d expect a Japanese bakery to have as well. There are some Korean foods and alcohols as well, but not much.
A little smaller than I expected, but very well stocked in Japanese/Asian products and ready made foods. The ready made sushi plates and bakery items are pretty good here, and so is the food at the food court. The food court offers lots of options, which is good, but can be overwhelming at first. It does get a bit crowded on the weekend, and the prices can be a bit on the expensive side. They have public restrooms and other stores like the book store, DVD store, and makeup shop, to name a few. For first time visitors, I would recommend checking these out first, then hit the food court, and leave grocery shopping for last so you can leave the market with fresh groceries and avoid impulse buys due to hunger. Overall it is a pretty great place, and although you might spend more than you expected, the experience is definitely worth it.
The food court is a hidden gem. Very authentic Japanese food. It reminds me of dining in Tokyo. If you havent been you must try it out
I love coming to Mitsuwa when I take trips up to Chicago. Theres a wide variety of options for food, a great grocery store, plus a Kinokuniya if youre looking for new books or manga! The curry from Sutadonya is one of my favorites to get when I visit. I also highly recommend B-Bee Crepe & Boba, their drinks are dairy-free so its the perfect, delicious choice if you are lactose intolerant.
I LOVE MITSUWA ( ˘ ³˘)♥︎ this place has so many great snacks and the BEST ramen in the burb area of Chicago. The candy section always has different candy every time we go which is nice to switch up and try something new. They have the BEST selection for sushi ingredients. The only negative feedback I have is that the crepe stand had a VERY rude cashier. I don’t want to let that person taint my positive experiences here.
Food court is amazing, all food is fantastic. Store has a decent selection. Fresh foods are delicious and the bakery is awesome. Supply chain issues see shortages on alot of popular stocked items right now. Fresh meat and fish is awesome. Bring a cooler bag, ice and bags available for coolers.
Went to the book store portion of the market and cashier was super rude acted like I wasn’t even there and then made me feel like a bother for even coming to the register. Slamming my product on the counter and my receipt at me then turned around and continued bagging something. Made me kind of feel unwelcome as well has heavy stares from other workers the whole time shopping
Second time here. Overall very nice shopping experience with good food selection at the food court. We wish shelf labels in the grocery store wouldve translated better what the items actually were, for what we didnt recognize. The bookstore was well stocked and the bakery had very fresh & tasty goods. The surrounding property and the parking lot both need some love. It wouldve been nice to sit at a table outside to eat, with the delta variant on the rise and the food court being as crowded as it was for lunchtime on a Monday. We ended up eating in our car.
Its hard to give an objective review. Compared to Minneapolis it was great to be able to go to a Japanese store that had a nice selection of products as well a bakery and a few restaurants. I was a bit surprised the selection wasnt a bit wider but I am sure that the reason is wholesalers supply the same products to stores so if they dont carry it you are out of luck. Also the reality of selling products that are for a small segment of the population. You have turn over products before they are outdated and I guess not everyone has the same addiction to garlic flavor potato chips that I have. At least I can find lots of other goodies I miss from Japan.
Of all the Mitsuwa locations in the USA, this is one of the best ones. From the outside, it is unassuming. But, once you are inside, you will understand why you should be here. Of course there is an excellent selection of produce, meats, seafood, and groceries. You are here though because you are trying to find brands that you have been missing in Japan, boxed foods and sauces that you can only find in a shop like this, or really hard to find items that can help you make that Japanese dish that you havent had in awhile.Bonuses: There is an amazing onsite bakery, several sweets shops and a bookstore, plus a food court with stalls that sell the traditional range of Japanese hot foods and small meals. The prepared bentos, sushi rolls, onigiri, buns, rice bowls, etc. are quite good for a grocery store. If you are within an hour or two of closing, you can also get these freshly prepared items at half price or heavily discounted if there are selections still available.
This was such a cool experience. Walking in youre nervous then you see all the different sections they have. Its Like a small piece of Asia.I went to just buy snacks for my 1st time visit. The food you can tell is fresh that I brought from the sushi bar and bakery. Items you cant get just anywhere. There was also a book store and restaurant other things that I couldnt get to in one trip. I will DEFINITELY be going again.
Much brighter and happier feel to rhis place since all the reno is complete. Love getting tapioca tea here
Such a fun place to get a tasty meal, baked good, groceries, and new books/stationery. They close promptly and their security doesnt play around with rude or disruptive people. I love that! Be respectful and you will be respected.
We absolutely love Mitsuwa! Great selection of Japanese goods and grocery. Some of the items you can find at better prices at HMart or other Asian marts, so keep an eye out for that. They have a great selection of sake here and a good number of them can be found chilled. I come here a lot to go to the Hippo Pastry Bakery thats located inside and get my mom red bean buns and other baked goods. They have a good selection of sushi and bento boxes, but you must come earlier to get the best selection or it will be picked over. Great food court with the ramen place being the most popular. There is often a long line for the ramen spot and the food court is usually packed, so it can be difficult to find a seat.
We should be ever so lucky to have such a slice of Japan in Illinois. Mitsuwa has everything from groceries to books and skin products. Its a one stop shop. It features an amazing food court that will have you back weekly!
Its such a great experience. The Ramen is so delicious
Love the food court, bakery and can always find imported beer at reasonable price.
The atmosphere is incredible and there are so many different foods to try. Prior to Mitsuwa Id only had sushi so this visit was a huge learning experience for me. I cant wait to go back!
Best place around for a fun Japanese experience. The bakery is a must-visit but can sell out so always visit early and as a first-stop.The grocery store has a ton of Japanese imports that can be hard to find elsewhere and includes cosmetics and toiletries in addition to fresh food, frozen food, snacks and candy, alcohol, condiments, and more. Newly renovated to include a new refrigerated drink section with sodas, teas, and canned coffees. Also has a new quick meal section with hot foods, sushi, bento-style meals, rice balls and more. Perfect to grab for a picnic or quick meal. The food court is ALWAYS packed so seating can be a little rough to find and wait times can be long but worth it. Santoka Ramen is a must try and well worth the wait. The matcha Cafe is great too for matcha lattes, shakes, and ice cream. You honestly cant go wrong ordering from any of the restaurants. The bookstore is great for a selection of magazines, books, art books, and Manga in both English and Japanese. A great selection of Ghibli merchandise. Pusheen and other cute items are also available. Great stationery section with a wide selection of notebooks, pens, markers, pencils, washi tape, stickers, and more. Various other anime collectible toys, figures, keychains, and pins are also available including gundam model kits.Various other stores are located here as well including a new mini-crane area, video store, deluxe dessert gift box store, and fancy cake store.A great place to visit to stock up on snacks, have a great meal, and get some fun Japanese merchandise.
This store is worth a drive of an hour or more. Great grocery area, book store, booze area, small shops, and a food court. The food court has so many options! I think 8 or 9 different restaurants to choose from. So delicious! They also have a sushi area and a bakery area. Very friendly staff and great selection.
5 restaurants in the food court, 5 separate shops, dedicated capsule station, and a separate bakery all inside one building.Very well maintained grocery store with a diverse selection of Japanese/Korean oriented foods be it snacks, freshly cooked foods, or produce.Beware of weeaboos in anime clothing such as Naruto headbands or ahegao hoodies.
One of the best places to buy a variety of goods in the Chicagoland area. Ive been coming to Mitsuwa for the past 6 years and its always such a vibrant and wonderful atmosphere. There is a huge variety of products to purchase -- everything from cooking supplies to frozen dumplings to freshly baked cake. I seriously love going to all of the additional stores tucked away such as Lady M or Royce chocolate, and its so convenient that its all in the same building. I also always pop into the bookstore to snag a few new manga or a nice pen. The food court is also one of my favorite places-- the variety is good and the food is so yummy. Also the bakery has some of the best treats to make your day go from good to great! Overall its such a wonderful grocery store that I cant help but stop in every time Im in the area. You wont be disappointed if you take the time to stop in as well!
Nice people, great sale prices. The employees know me after all these years, say HI, and always help out. Love shopping here.
Very cute slice of Japan in Chicago, a few minutes away from the airport. An authentic Japanese grocery experience, with a cute little stationery/bookstore and a delicious food court as well! If you like Japanese good and culture, I definitely recommend.
My favorite Asian supermarket. Because of the growing environment, I love Japanese products and food very much. They are high-quality. Everything is perfect except for the higher prices. There are a wealth of Japanese products and some Taiwanese snacks. Really Love it very much and the shop staff are also very friendly, I will always come here to buy.I am really happy that there is such a big Japanese supermarket in the Chicago area where I can go shopping.
My husband brought me here to do some shopping and the food court is excellent!! Really great place to find the hard to get items for your dishes!
For those who love Japenese culture, food, and fare will find this to be a real treat. Be sure to check out Happy Hippo bakery and the other food vendors for delicious treats.
Theyve got everything! The grocery store is super clean with lots of space, but the food court was crowded with sticky floors. I loved the bookstore best of all -- treasures galore if youre into pens and stationary.
This is by far one of the best Japanese markets Ive ever visited. As someone who has traveled to Japan, this is a very authentic experience. I was absolutely amazed. Huge variety of foods, tasty pre made foods and very clean. I grabbed myself plenty of things, its hard to walk out of here empty handed. I grabbed myself an onigiri and it was very tasty. Im visiting family in Milwaukee, but Im someone who likes to check out Asian markets. It was worth an hours drive! I highly recommend stopping in and visiting. Theres something there for everyone.
The bookstore is what really makes this place. They have made some nice improvements over the years. Other Asian markets popping up closer to home are a tiny bit nicer overall but this one has the awesome bookstore the others dont. Wish the ramen aisle was bigger, its small and always out of stock due to popularity.
Very nice market place. Huge line of skin care for asian skin. Has a lot of marvelous stores..very clean and organized. Definitely going back:-)
Great marketplace that is like a mini mall and grocery store merged together. The products available in the grocery store are great and they have great tea at thw cafeteria. If you visit, be sure to check out the bookstore as the selection is very unique. Overall a great place to visit and try food for the day!
One of my favorite places to shop for Japanese food and merchandise. This Mitsuwa has a huge collection of reasonably priced food, Japanese items, and more, making it one of our staples for Japanese food. We try to make it out from the city one or more times a month just to shop and then eat at their stellar food court. The food court in particular has tons of authentic options for an affordable Japanese lunch, and I always feel like I’m back in Japan when I eat there! The service here is friendly and competent.
#MM throwback to our visit in August to @mitsuwa_marketplace in #arlingtonheightsA Japanese supermarket chain that offers usual and hard to find groceries, snacks baked goods as well as cosmetics, small appliances and other goods. They have an extensive Seafood section where you can get unusual Seafood such as broiled eel, Sushi and other Seafood. The food court is large and offers a vast variety of food for lunch or dinner including Sushi Sashimi Bento ramen noodles and more. They also have a bakery, a bookstore with anime and other items straight from Japan, and a liquor store. Everything you need in one convenience location. If youre looking for anything Japanese @mitsuwa_marketplace is where you should go.#japanese #grocery#japanesegrocery
I absolutely LOVE this place. Their ramen is really good. Definitely going here every week.
Been wanting to come here for years. Must ask why do places like this offer handicapped parking and no way for people with limited walking ability to access their store?!?! It looked like a beautiful store but I could not explore the store to find what I needed. Cant come back without an electric shopping cart.
Great spot for a variety of Asian foods and groceries! Highly recommend going to the food court and the bookstore. Whenever I come here for my basic essentials I need in my kitchen, I always find what I need and other hidden treasures. On top of that, I also stop in at the bookstore because their manga selection is incredible in my opinion!
Recently remodeled grocery store + food court. Don’t come here on the weekend or expect a huge crowd. It does get quite packed in the food court so it might be hard to get a seat. The food court was fantastic and the food did give us a great taste of Japan. The bakery is a must and the grocery store itself offers a variety of imported Japanese products
Always a blast to stop by. Fun to walk through, find some cool products and, new foods. Highly recommend the bakery. Friends who are familiar with Japanese culture and tourists to Japan find Mitsuwa a treat to visit.
Mitsuwa is an amazing marketplace with many great small stores. They have a large range of Japanese and Asian goods at great prices. Definitely recommended to anyone whos in the area.
This is the best place to get Japanese food in an informal setting in Illinois. My wife and I live an hour away and we make time to eat here at least twice a week. In addition to incredible Japanese food they also have an amazing grocery section where you can buy ingredients to recreate your favorite dishes. There is a bakery with consistently delicious pastries and cakes. There are also small shops where you can buy non food items like books and cosmetics. It isn’t just a place to eat, but a fun place to spend a couple hours. Grab a bite walk around the shops and then pick up groceries to bring home.
Very cool Japanese grocery store! Has a lot of authentic foods and products. The bakery, food court, stationary store and mini arcade game station are all very good as well. Highly recommend
This is one unique place in the middle of the western suburbs (I am not sure exactly what town it is in, but near Elk Grove Village). It is a grocery store (Asian) with a food court. A food court with 5 or 6 different Asian cuisines offered. Plenty of seating. I chose Korean today and got bulgogi and rice. It was a good, hearty winter lunch. Plenty of options. Every option at every place has a plastic mold showing the end product. Perfect for a novice, but curious, Asian food eater. Plenty of food, drink and sweet options to choose from. Why not five stars? It felt a little disorganized to me, but that is probably just the American in me coming out.
Absolutely love bringing friends here for the experience and mainly the bakery! Love the choco cream crab & turtle!
The store is very clean, helpful staff, lots of variety and has the most amazing food court and bakery! Highly recommend!
If you like the culture from Asia youll definitely love it here! This place has everything you can want from skin care to a whole food court full of delicious options! I wouldve stayed longer but my equator blood kicked in with how cold the AC was blasting 😂😂😂
Mitsuwa is always a very fun experience for me. The grocery store has a lot of very cool and unique product as well as delicious food from Japan. The food court has some very good food stalls with a lot of variety.
Nothing really said BUY ME, but seeing a few roaches on the floor told us to get the hell out. The Boba at B-Bee Crepes & Boba was okay, nothing too good. The store on the left where you first enter, was overpriced for no reason.$10.00 for a cheap looking reusable bag? No thanks.
They offer lots of food to choose. I love their bakery shop. The market didn’t have many options compared with other groceries.
Ive been coming here since I was a kid. Its one of my favorite places to go for my essential needs. If youve experienced the summer festivals, youll know that its one of the greatest events to be a part of.
Amazing food! Amazing bakery! Such a treasure. Top notch ramen
Great food court and the bakery is delish - especially if you dont want overly sweet pastries. Not that I dont love me a gooey cinnamon roll with cream cheese frosting, but there are times Im just not in the mood for that. Also, nice little bookstore for all things anime and other pop culture items.
Love coming here whenever I get the time to do so. Great atmosphere and great prices.
Love visiting this place. Ask the Japanese food, goods, groceries and food court. Sad that did court classes an hour earlier than the grocery store does. The bakery is amazing. Love the shokupan there.
Since this awesome grocery store is 40+ miles SW of my house in Beach Park, sadly I only make it out here 3-5 times per year. But whenever I set foot in this place, it sends me back in time.I grew up a navy brat primarily overseas and nearly 7.5 years in Japan when my father was stationed at Yokosuka from June 80- Nov 87.This place screams authenticity to the highest and I feel like Im walking around one of the Japanese markets off-base back in Yoko. Kept very clean, always friendly customer and prices are reasonable for products that are imported.Always enjoyed Nippon tradition and love their food especially authentic ramen at the Santouka restaurant at the food court which sadly wasnt open when we visited the day before Independence Day. Hopefully not permanently closed and will reopen soon. Many brands and items sold here I remember seeing as a child growing up in beautiful Japan. Theres a seafood section, bakery, liquor dept, cosmetics counter, book store/newspaper stand, a food court and other amenities. So happy Mitsuwa is here and hope they never close down, its my 80s time travel portal!
Always a fun place! The food court does get full on the weekends so plan accordingly. Overall, lovely place to shop for snacks and imported goods necessary for home cooked meals!
Good Asian food selection. Air conditioning wasnt working too well in the store though. It was humid and probably close to 80 degrees inside. It was 99 degrees outside though.Avoid the bookstore. Markup in there is 10 to 20 times higher than what you can get things on ebay for. They literally sell the same pens dollar tree sells for $1 for $19, for example.Again, food market itself was great.
What a treasure it is to have Mitsuwa, I wish we can have a Mitsuwa where I lived. What’s better than a grocery store, a deli, a bakery, and small merch shops all in one place. I want to eat everything! The deli have so many choices and the sushi is so affordable and fresh! The only drawback is you’ll have to come here more than a few times to really enjoy all the food and baked goods. I visit every time I come to Chicago. I recommend this to any visitors in the area.
They have a great selection of products. The best part of this store is the book store that have inside. From cute plushies to books to figures they have it all. Love it.
This place was such a fun experience to visit! It would have already been a great place if it was just the grocery store but the food court and bookstore really set it over the top. So fun and so many things to do and try there, a must-see!!
Great Japanese Market. Has something for all. The food court has some of the most amazing food it even beats restaurants.
Nearly everyone is masked, food court is still open and selling delicious dishes. Some areas have been updated with new business, to keep all usable space as interesting and accessible as possible.
