Chanced upon this wonderful place just a couple of days ago. For those of you out there who need a big beautiful statement in their hotel foyer or their restaurant needs a huge banquet table or if any business needs a conference table that would surely make the sale - this is your place. And this place is not only for big beautiful pieces of wood turned into tables, but it’s also for the crafty ones and the woodworkers and anyone who can appreciate absolutely beautiful wood. You have got to go to this place even if it’s a distance. That’s all I got for you!
I get down with some Scavengers Paradise! This place is awesome. Some of the most beautiful and rare materials I’ve ever seen. They always have cool stuff that inspires me in some of my best builds. And they guys/gals working there are extremely helpful super friendly, and very knowledgeable. Even after the 1,001 questions with 10 people in line they’re happy to help. It’s almost like they like what they’re doing and genuinely enjoy helping others. All of that and they are super fair with they’re pricing. While everyone else is hiking up they’re prices with this lumber inflation they’re prices have stayed consistent and fair. I highly recommend checking them out if you haven’t already.
This is one of the best places. If you are a wood worker. Go. If you are a crafter. Go. If you are a artist. Go. You never are sure what you will find. As a added bonus. Mark the owner is a pleasure to talk to. Whether you find something or not
Mike is really an amazing person. Such talent and an even more genuine person all around. I felt a connection right away. I sought out his work after seeing it in a local Asheville arts magazine. Glad to have met him and even more excited to see where the friendship goes.
True to the name, but do not be fooled. Theres plenty of quality items on hand for the discerning buyer, especially in high quality wood. Surprises and treasures can be found in every aisle.
The place is amazing. If you enjoy working with exotic woods, their selection is among the most interesting I have ever seen--and I have travelled the world. The artsy stuff they have in the front is also approaching museum quality. If you go, plan on doubling the anticipated time allotment. One other point, the on-site staff is both a source of information and a delight to speak with. I got a beautiful piece of South American morada wood that I am converting into a mantle. One of their on-site staff provided a world class instruction on some how-to and why that is making my job easier and likelier to be even more successful. I will be going back.
Awesome place . Cool to see all the different types of woods from all over. JIM is very nice and a hard working man. A must have to see place .
We began going here back in 2017 as we were building our home and found a lot of things, like floor ceramic and wood tile we used for many different purposes including diy counter tops for our kitchen and bathrooms! We were back the other day for ideas we are having for some outside projects. Mark, the owner, is a great guy!
Ipe and 3/4” birch plywood paradise! Oh my, super friendly folks, great find and interesting local artwork. What a place. Thanks guys
I went here for the 1st time, today. Mark was super nice and made it a point to remember my name. Im a wood turner so it was awesome being to pick through some exotics i havent turned before.
Could spend hours strolling through the aisles. Lots of interesting wood.
My kind of place for great wood bits! Want a singular live edge statement plank? This is the only place you need to visit. From $80 to $32,000 theyve got what youre looking for or something even better. Ended up with a gorgeous 8ft by 9inch black walnut with spalling in one section that looks like triple lotus flower after planing. Delightful staff, too. Next project: plank on which to hang Dads duck relief carvings. Be prepared to scrounge your heart away!
Mark is a great guy with an unparalleled selection of inventory. You will not find cuts or species of wood like this anywhere else!
My husband and I have worked with Mark and the others here on several occasions when looking for wood to make custom pieces. We always find something we love and the service is excellent. So far we have had a gorgeous macacauba hardwood floor installed in the kitchen and have had a custom powder room vanity fabricated using two other woods from Scroungers. Love going there just to look around! Thanks!
A little pricey but extremely high quality. Cant find this stuff anywhere else. Staff are very helpful.
Beautiful selection. Not sure that the lumber from south America is sustainably sourced. Great staff.
First of all, Jim is the best thing that place has. His customer service is off the charts! Great guy! They have sooo many types of exotic woods (some that I didnt even knew existed or I couldnt even say the name of them 🤣), from small pieces, to large pieces, to slabs, to flooring and even tiles. They have it all. Their pricing is pretty good.Definitely will be coming back for some more when I run out of what I bought.
Overpriced products. After digging for tiles for 30 min, with no help from anyone. Decided on tile that has been there for at least 4 months as I had been eyeing. Simple glass subway tile not major brand name. Got 3 boxes and owner advised 2.00 ea!! Better tile at major store 1/2 the price. We waited for owner to get off phone for 20 min vs advising the party to hold. Just horrible customer service and scroungers paradise is a horrible name for this place!! Should be Rip Off Paradise. Why save money when you can spend more. Horrible.
This place is 95% wood so it should be called Wood Scroungers Paradise.
They always have the best prices on plywood and that definitely true right now with the way lumber prices are. Lowes wants $82 for a sheet of 3/4 unfinished maple plywood. Scroungers Paradise had furniture grade pre-finished birch sheets for $64. And their sheets arent all banged up like the ones a Lowes.
Owner was super friendly and helpful. Gave us a really good deal
I called and talked to Mark at Scroungers Paradise about my boat refitting I am currently undertaking. I drove up to the store today for the first time and couldnt believe the selection of exotic wood. With Marks help I found what I needed to do the replacement.
Great place to find specific types of wood for crafts and woodworking needs. Its my go to place for my projects
Anything wood, thats your store. Awesome selection of all kinds of species of wood, even purple heart!!
Really cool place great deals awesome service
Been going here sense they opened they always seem to have what I need that special project. I can spend a couple hrs there just looking around
Amazing place! I was in awe as soon as I walked inside. Great folks also. A must see. Especially for those of us who are crafty!!
If you are building or remodeling, an artist in wood, or love art, this is a great place to visit. They have a good tile selection to go with the huge selection of building materials and exotic woods.
Mark is wonderful and runs a very friendly, laid back business. I had the pleasure of meeting his mother and we all chatted while I was checking out. The selection of items are vast and I had so much fun walking through the store checking out all of the cool stuff. I left with 3 rugby shirts that were originally priced at $60 (from original retailer) and Mark gave me all of them for only $4. Ill definitely be back!
Its an absolute delight every single time. Scroungers Paradise is aptly named; a pickers heaven and great resource for something specific or something you werent even considering. Stop in and get ready to have your mind blown. The talented owner, Mark, is one of a kind. Youll remember him and his amazing business until forever!
If you wanna find gold, you gotta dig a little!Yeah they have interesting and exotic woods, you’ll read and find that to be true. They also have lots of surplus contractor supplies; wood flooring, all kinds of tile, boxes of nails/bolts, drawer pulls, table legs, hinges, decorative cast iron poles & dozens of different styled toppers, pallets of welding supplies, 3in pvc ball valves, metal/wicker mesh, industrial rolls of plastic sheeting, hundreds of wood working drill/router bits (most still in their protective plastic or unwrapped) and all kinds of other neat goodies for those who are looking for materials, tools or supplies. They also have so much more with their one offs! Want an original machining part from the Rolls Royce factory? They have one. Need a 50lb ship yard eye bolt? They have 20. Looking for a 6ft single strand pully wheel and 200ft of galvanized aircraft cable to go with it? They got that too. Their heavy metal is seriously impressive, and often overlooked. For crying out loud they have shelves of unused, still in wrapping radiator heat exchangers right next to 400, 600, 1000lb industrial roller chains, which is across the aisle from the 3 ton John Deer Diesel engine! Where are you gonna find that kind of mix anywhere else?I love the maps. They have over 75 map boxes filled with USGS quads (mostly alphabetized) from everywhere around the nation. There are boxes of index maps, Natural Resources Survey map, Defense Mapping Agency quads and state maps the size of walls. I’ve given them as gifts, cut them up as cards, and have a couple under glass as decoration.Just recently I found a drawer filled with DMA projector transparencies, which was delightful surprise for me and the owner!! I gave one as a gift, and have some attached to windows as privacy screens. They are so cool to look at, and their detail/resolution are perfect! Excellent condition! These types of maps aren’t made any more, nor easily obtainable or cheap.I wouldn’t have found it, if I didn’t dig. Which is the golden rule of Scroungers Paradise for me. If I don’t get my hands dirty, scrounger around, and “look under that thing,” then I’m missing out on the gold.
3/4 inch, 4x8 finished birch plywood for $63 a sheet! Great service. Nice folks!
Great place, the owner is very knowledgeable about wood species, and hes an Awsome personIf youre looking for something special hes got itI would recommend going to a least look around, youll be there all day
Bought some Sapele lumber for historic exterior woodwork projects. They offer very competitive prices for the size and scale of an historic restoration project (board ft requirements dont meet the minimum that exotic hardwood lumber yards require) and are a great option.
Lots of well priced solid wood flooring but the real gem for carvers and crafters is the exotic woods section. Good prices on Redwood, canary wood, purple heart and wenge.
Great time looking at the not so common selection of wood, tile, doors ect. Not a discount warehouse but a fair price for good products.
I have been hearing about this place for a while and finally got around to checking it out. It is AWESOME!
Awesome spot for nice selection of raw cuts. Pretty pricey
Awesome place for Ipe and plywood.
Very nice folks. Incredible exoctic wood. Its a fun place to just look around.
If unique is what you seek...... Scroungers has it... 5 star rating to Mark and his team...
Absolutely incredible monument to the beautiful hardwoods of the world and other treasures of the world. Stopped by on my way up to an Airbnb for vacation, and will likely be stopping by at least one more time during my vacation! Mark was great and was more than happy to let me be an annoying customer and dig through a pallet full of offcuts from their woodshop and was able to identify almost every specific wood I had picked out, and quoted me a perfectly reasonable price for such beautiful exotic hardwoods. Absolutely cant wait to go back, its an amazing experience all on its own!
Unique selection of woods, arts, crafts...and everything else under sun. Friendly staff too
Part lumber supply, part flea market. A fun place to browse.
I have been to Scroungers twice to get some lovely Russian Birch 5x5s for a van that Im building. Mark has always been incredibly helpful and has cut me a deal both times! Hes a true salesman - gives you more than you came in for, gets about 10-20% more cash out of you at the same time, but does it all while asking about your project and wanting to get to know you. And Ill happily support that. The guys that do the heavy lifting are always helpful and pleasant. Definitely my favorite place to get good, quality wood in Asheville.
As always, not much to look at on the outside but go inside. An eclectic collection of items. Wood, art, slabs, art, parts, pieces buy it cause it may not be there when you go back.
If your looking for a specific kind of wood for a project this is the place to go. They have a very large selection of different kinds of wood. Very nice and organized.
Lots of wood and many other items to browse.
Highlight of a short side trip to Asheville.
There is a multitude of rare wood in this place along with other various salvage items. I love scrounging through such things and will certainty be returning in the not too distant future. Only complaint I could come up with is that it wasnt easy figuring out where the employees were but I did eventually find one. He was knowledgeable and was able to answer most of my questions. And he provided a way to get information that he wasnt sure of.
This was my 1st time here they have a wide variety of building materials everything from tile to wood flooring and some very unique and rare species of other wood products and mill work. Staff was friendly and welcoming I will definitely go here again.
Great for flooring. Random curiosities bring us back.
Good selection of different woods also slabs of wood up to 16, I will be coming back here. The wife also found some glass tile we plan to use in our master bath.
I have never seen anyplace like this..it truly is a scroungers paradise!! They have everything including the kitchen sink!! Exotic lumber, scented candles, rugby shirts, art and more. Plan to stay a couple of hours if you go.
Great place to find unusual types of wood!
This place is amazing! A woodworkers paradise! The personal assistance was awesome!
They did not try to push you on buying. Their knowledge of wood was very good!
Interesting place if you are looking for weird woods.
This is a toy store for adults, especially if you love wood. They have types of wood you won’t find anywhere else. You can find all sorts of treasures there. The inventory changes often. The staff is exceptional, very friendly.
This place really brings the hunt to bargain hunting. So many strange and exotic things to discover. We stumbled upon a set of brand new door knobs that I had only just heard about. Cant wait to get them installed.
This is a fun store to go to. Lots of various items from the most random places. If you are doing some home reno. projects you have to check it out. Their collection of bulk and salvage exotic wood is second to none with several rare specimens on display that are a cool sight to see.
Nice variety helpful.
We shop at Scroungers regularly. We have always had a great experience. Mark and Jim are the best. Many off the wall products and a great source for exotic woods. Mark is great with the children too and is always nice to my wife and daughter. Thank you again!
Very unique assembly of many woods and tiles, etc.
Awesome staff Jim was very very helpful. He did a great job in helping us with what we needed
Love this place! Guys are really helpful! Great exotic woods, and many choices.
Woodworker must visit.
This place has one of the best wood slab selections probably in the state. You can also purchase various things that the staff has made. They also have nice choices in reclaimed materials as well. Not just wood either lots of salvaged things to help with your project. All around a great place. If you find this review helpful please give it a thumbs up.
We had a great experience purchasing wood from them to do the floors throughout our entire home. It was a ton of work sanding and finishing, rather than just buying a pre-finished product, but we love the end result! It was excellent quality flooring! They were very accommodating when it came to storing the wood and helping us arrange delivery at a time that works well for our remodel.
OMG. What a fun spot for scrounging! They have everything from exotic woods to screws and nuts. Not to mention furniture, books, art, fabric, architectural goodies to design with, and kids books! All indoors and comfortable with giant fans blowing. The owner is a hoot. Worth the visit!
The name hits nail on the head! If like to plunder and look at different things this is the place for you! Huge selection of wood and odd pieces for the decorative savvy people! The staff was very nice and helpful!
As someone whos just started out woodworking, this place has been amazing. Very friendly people working there, fair prices, and a great selection for basically any project. So happy to of found this place.
Scroungers Paradise is a friendly and welcoming place with breath taking prices of all sorts. Exotic woods and the best I have ever seen.
Great place if you are looking for anything, they got it, great selection of exotic woods and slabs too.
Do you like wood? This place is amazing! Almost exclusively south American exotic woods at incredible prices, nick-nacks, old doors and windows, and a whole reference catalog of just old maps. The guys who work there were ridiculously friendly. If youre a Crafty person who has wood projects you should stop by here. It may not be everything youre looking for for your project but it was everything Im looking for mine.
Find anything you need for your building project here! Beautiful high end lumber and flooring at prices you have to see to believe. Make sure you buy all you need for your job though as it may not ever reappear
Looks very interesting from the website. We hope to go there soon
Neat place. Worth checking out!
A most interesting store. Lots of wood slabs, lumber, flooring, antiques, rock, basically if you can use it in construction, they have it. The staff were very helpful and loaded my purchase into my vehicle quickly. You could easily spend all day here and not see everything there is. I will definitely be back for future purchases.
Amazing, live edge tables...
Havent purchased any large lumber orders (yet), but I found a cool painting that I love, and enjoy wandering around. Cool stuff.
Interesting stuff nice owner, will be back for my lumber needs
Really fun place for treasure hunting. Interesting and friendly Owner and staff. Well worth visiting.
Very disappointed... Went in and it was almost deserted in the main part of building bit lots of neat art work..but felt like we shouldnt even been there...hell.anyone could have walked off with whatever wanted cause no one ever acknowledges you. Then get to a point where looks like alot of cool stuff set up but sign says no one can pass without eye Googles and none are offered at the door
