I saw the 4.8 star review and was excited to check out a mechanic that seemed to be loved (searching for a mechanic in the area that does good work when the job is more than I can take on). From the first time through the door I noticed some concerns. They use some classic sales techniques to make you feel like they are doing you a favor. They did it to me then I watched them do it to a couple coming in to get brakes worked on. They say something like, “We are so busy, normally booking a week or two out, but you know what, I’ll squeeze you in in two days.” This makes you feel like they are on your side, but really they are just priming you to say “yes” to whatever cost they tell you the repair will take.As for cost, they told me it would cost about $950 when all I brought my truck to them for was an abs light, knowing it was a failing wheel speed sensor, which I communicated to them. When I asked about the cost there explanation was done in a way to warp numbers and just get me to sign up. When I questioned specific aspects of it I came to find that the labor cost is reasonable, but they charge significantly more than parts should cost when they buy parts. They were going to charge $500-$600 for a part I could get at O’Reilly’s for $190 or from the OEM website for $250. I’d understand a markup of $50 or maybe even $100, but $300 seems insane to me. They’d be making more on the part than the labor to put it in. I asked if I could buy the pet and bring it to them but they wouldn’t let me.TL;DR: Seem really nice, but they are just doing that so you say yes when they want to overcharge you. This is the kind of place that gives mechanics shops a bad rep for taking advantage of people who don’t know much about vehicles and fair prices.

A great big thank you to Rodney and the team at Northern Auto Repairs. I have been going to this shop for a very long time. Although they are extremely busy, I never felt like just another customer. Everyone from the staff who answer to the phones to the ones working on the cars are courteous and professional. My repairs were performed within the timeframe promised and it was a pleasure start to finish. They even arranged for and paid the cost of an Uber ride for me. It was a very nice and unexpected bonus for doing business with them. I highly recommend them. Thanks as always.

Always thorough in their documentation and I really like how they send you photographs including video in some cases of what is wrong with your vehicle and why it needs to be repaired. They also give you a comprehensive examination on the vehicles health overall and report things that they would suggest as well. Always prompt with their communication and Ive used them for years and will continue to do so I highly recommend going to see them if you have any automotive issues.

Came back from a long drive back from vacation with the family; car brakes were completely shot and I needed my vehicle fixed ASAP so I could get back on the toad the following week for work. I took my car for an oil change and had my two little kids with me. The owner was so kind and they had so much for the kids to do which was not expected. I never even had to bring out the things I brought because they were so entertained. Plus the service was fast and great. Car is running great. We will definitely be going back for future car needs.

I am very satisfied with everything start to finish. Kamile and the lead tech were amazing to deal with, very friendly and I felt like my truck was in good service the entire time. I regularly work on my vehicles, but had an exhaust rust out so needed them to do it as I do not weld. I felt like if I knew nothing about vehicles I was comfortable with the technicians. As I knew nearly everything about my truck, I still felt very comfortable with them. All in all, they won my business from here on out and highly recommend them over other service shops in the area as I have tried quite a lot.

Thankful for all the previous positive reviews as they led me to Northern Auto - I am very happy I chose this repair shop. My 2013 Malibu needed some TLC, mainly involving attention to my brake and A/C systems. All is running well now thanks to this team! I found the inspection break down - with photos and notes/descriptions - that was sent after my cars inspection to the be extremely helpful. I have never experienced that type of evaluation before when getting work done to my car; it made understanding any problem areas much easier as I was able to view photos and any notes. Kamille was very helpful from the start with scheduling, down to taking my payment over the phone. Rodney was very knowledgable while talking to me and explaining findings from my cars evaluation and giving options for needed repairs. I will be using Northern Auto for any future vehicle services!

Ive been coming to Northern Auto for many years now. They have always done a great job finding the problem and solving it. I drive a 2010 Escape and it still drives very well. I go for oil changes, tire rotations and for any issue I have. 100% trust them with my car.

Wednesday we had the shock absorbers and front struts replaced at Northern Auto on our 2015 Honda Civic with 80K+ miles. This is an expensive repair. We have used Northern Auto in the past. They are reported to not be the least expensive, but we have had good results.The car handles better / feels tighter.In my opinion, mechanics are similar to doctors. You need to find one you can trust and that trust remains or diminishes based on the outcome of the service provided. So far, our experience with Northern Auto has been positive.

The mechanics and management were amazing. They have a very innovative online system that tells you what is wrong from your phone. 100% will take my car here again whenever it needs anything.

The employees at Northern Auto Repair were very helpful in explaining how to drop the car off and pick it up. I particularly liked that they sent the diagnostic report via a link in a text message. The quote for repairs can=me the same way. No other auto repair shop has ever delivered a quote to me that way. It was really convenient to look at the diagnostic and quote and decide what I wanted to do without having to go into the shop or even go sit in front of my computer. I got the repair quote on Monday morning and my vehicle was ready to go by 3 pm Monday afternoon. So fast and easy!

Ive been taking my cars here for the last decade or so, and will continue to in the future. The staff / mechanics here have always been some of the most honest, professional, and helpful that I have experienced. 10/10 will visit again!

Called on Wednesday to schedule for an estimate and my Nissan was fixed Friday afternoon. Great crew at this shop and ai will definitely be using them in the future. Anthony and Scott were great.

Cindy called and reminded me that I still had coupons left in the booklet I purchased last year. I needed back brakes and was able to use two of my coupons (for brakes and the towing cost) from my coupon book which saved me 80 bucks. During this pandemic it can be difficult to have work performed on your car. Some repair places have restricted the kinds of work they are performing. I like how Northern Auto is handling business during this time, and the touch less pick up was also appreciated.

The whole experience was wonderful, they were professional, kind and explained everything. The price was clearly explained witha line by line estimate. They sent me pictures and a video of what was wrong and what was ended. I will be back.

Ive been going to Northern for years. Originally, it was to help my father drop off cars for repair. Now, more than 30 years later, Im still taking my own cars to Northern. I feel theyve been honest with me regarding what my vehicles need, and have helped me keep my older vehicles running. I also appreciate that they follow up on the repairs, checking to see if everything seems to be okay. Most recently, the brake light came on in my van. Turns out the brakes needed quite a bit of work... rather upsetting, since Id had a dealership check out the brakes about 1 year earlier. But, since the brakes still didnt feel right after the dealership charged me quite a bit to fix them, I really wasnt convinced they did anything useful. Now, after Northern fixed the brakes, the vans braking feels like it should. Very definitely a huge improvement. And, before doing any work, they sent me pictures of the issues, where I could clearly see that the work was needed for the brakes and for the worn serpentine belt. I take my family on vacations in this old van -- it is important to me that it be kept safe, and I believe Northern has helped a lot in that respect!

I called in advance to get my brakes replaced, and was told that they could have that done by the end of the day, that was @10 am I arrived at 11:30. The woman who I spoke with came out once she got the keys to my truck, and started taking pictures of my truck and informing me of an inspection they were going to perform on my truck. I told her that all I needed was the brakes to be replaced, and she told me that the inspection was necessary and would cost $69 . I asked if that would go towards the repairs when I got the brakes replaced and she said yes, but if I didnt get the work done I would have to pay the $69 inspection fee. So its noon when this happens, and she tells me it will be awhile before they can look at the truck & I reiterate that I just need the brakes replaced... 3:30 and Im told that the total bill is $1800.00 and I think to myself that they never intended to replace my brakes that day & if I did decide to get the work done who knows what or when I would have gotten my truck back. Never ever have I felt so scammed, $70 for nothing. The truck is a 2004 work truck and it wasnt even worth $1000, why an inspection, why the scam?I am going to tell everyone I can about this shady business practice, so disappointed

Friendly service and excellent care. They arent the cheapest youll find but they are top notch and worth every penny. They provide recommendations but do not try and push you to get any service done. Highly recommend.

I’m a retired automotive engineer and was impressed how thorough their inspection was. The repairs they recommended made an incredible difference in how smoothly and quietly the car rode. They also showed me all the old parts to verify they were worn out. It was a worry-free experience.

Great experience! Felt I was treated very well and with respect. Anthony is great! I love how they send you a full report on your car that you can look at before calling and discussing what you want to do! I also appreciate thy they have a deal with a car rental place to help you stdy mobile. A little pricey but i felt it was worth it. Definitely will be back.The only thing that bothered me would was female mechanic complaining, rolling her eyes when Anthony spoke to her, and swearing while he was on the phone and in close distance of me and another customer. Very glad I didnt have to deal with her personally or I feel like I would have had a different opinion of the place.Other wise everyone else was very friendly, from the guy who drove me to the rental place, to the guy who worked on my car... They all made me feel good about my choice. I highly recommend this place and will be back for future services.

I have been taking my 2006 Scion to Northern Auto since I moved to this area in 2009. My goal has been to keep my car in good working order well over the 300,000 mile mark, and at nearly 170,000 miles, I am well on my way, thanks in large part to the excellent care my car receives at Northern. The services are prompt, reliable, and reasonably priced. Without a good mechanic, the maintenance of my car easily could have cost me thousands more. Most of all, I don’t worry about reliable transportation, as my car is taken care of. Plus, they are nice to my dog, Luna, who always enjoys her three-month visits to Northern.

Quoted me double the price of other shops than tried to charge me double of what I initially signed off for to have the car looked at. Ended up leaving paying $70 for them to tell me I need a new blower motor which is pretty much what I told them when I dropped it off.They quoted me:$70 to look at it (tried to hit me at $140)$550 blower motor$650 tune up / new spark plugs

I called looking for a simple quote over the phone to have a part installed. CINDY insisted I bring the car into the shop for them to tell me ANY estimate on replacing a part.This was a simple neutral safety switch issue. The part needs to be taken out and replaced. Easy enough right?I was able to get quotes from 3 places but not from northern. It seems they really want you in the shop before quoting you so that they can win you business because they already have you car.Oh and by the way be ready to pay for a diagnostic prior to reserving any estimate as well.So to be clear, where I was able to get ball park estimates from other local places, northern requires a diagnostic at 57 bucks BEFORE they even provide a quote for how much the labor would be.Its a good selling strategy but a terrible customer service vision.Hard to compare apples to apples when you already paid 57 bucks, took time off work, and they have your car still. Makes not hard for busy people to get multiple quotes and forces me to skip them (northern) altogether for consideration.I hate leaving 1 stars without something nasty happening so ill give 2.If they decide to quote me over the phone for labor Id be happy to change it to a 4 star rating

Truly surprised! They provide excellent customer service and quality work. I will definitely do business with them again.

First, they make you pay a excessive fee for diagnostics $138.52, (that to my knowledge does not get credited to your service). However, they only ran diagnostic on one of the three problems I had (only the radiator not the blinkers or ignition). When I asked about the blinkers, they acted oblivious to the problem and said they would need to charge me for another diagnostics test. Their explanation was that they were going to need to test a lot of fuses to find the problem, but I thought that is why I was paying $138.52 in the first place. I saw the original paperwork (which is an excessive amount, by the way) that I submitted, and the blinkers were the first thing I wrote down. Also, after keeping my car for 5 days (including the weekend, so 3 business days), it turns out that their diagnostics on the radiator were wrong.They said my radiator as leaking and needed to be “removed and replaces”. Parts were going to be ~$300-400 for (Which I could get from AutoZone for about $150) and a few hundred (I think around 700) for labor. I called another mechanic from the parking lot that said they could do labor for about $200. I went to the other place and they laughed and said radiator was fine, it just needed a flush and a needed a new thermostat. Less than $300 out the door and the problem was fixed. (To make sure I was not jumping to conclusions about Northern Auto being wrong, it has been about 3 months and over 2000 miles since this happened and I have had no problems since)I understand mechanics might make a mistake, but that seems like a big one (>$1200 for parts, labor and diagnostics). Plus, I would have been right back there since the thermostat would have still been broken. Also, when I tried to get more information from the guy and lady at the front desk they were very rude and short with me (They had been very pleasant until I stated asking questions). The guy even started raising his voice when I asked why the diagnostic was not run on the blinkers.Typically, I give the mechanic the benefit of the doubt and assume they know more than me about cars, but from the beginning all the interactions I had here seemed fishy. I talked to some other friend and they had some bad stories (even legal issues) with this place. I recommend you go elsewhere. There are plenty of mechanics around.

Finally came here a few weeks ago after Ive driven past this place for so many years and Im very glad I tried them out. Extremely nice, fast service and you can tell that they care. They texted me my multi-point inspection with pictures of every part of the inspection and then called to go over the results, recommending what they thought the car needed and didnt need. Will definitely come back!

Im a big fan of Northern. Id driven by there for years before I finally stopped in with a problem. Not sure why I waited! Their team always greets you with a smile and genuine concern for your visit. The pricing is fair and they always thoroughly explain why something needs to be addressed. And they follow up with a phone call to be sure youre happy and back on the road again. When I pick my car up it is very helpful that they tell me what future maintenance I will need with estimated costs & time frame in which it should be taken care of. I always buy the Car Care Club for free oil changes & discounts on maintenance & repairs. I usually keep my cars for 10 - 12 years & with Northern taking care of my scheduled maintenance & repairs I have never been stranded with a car that wouldn’t run.

I really appreciate the personal service and maintenance recommendations I get with every single visit here. The mechanics take the time to point out issues and give an honest opinion of the severity of scheduling services whether it be do it now, or an honest it can wait. There arent very many trustworthy and dependable independent mechanics around anymore, but I can really rely on this service to keep our older foreign and domestic cars on the road for as many years as possible. Ladies never go here!!! These people are rude (woman who answers the phone), way too expensive and on top of that they made my car worse just by doing their inspection. Had them take a look at one of my windows because it wouldnt roll up. They charged me $138 just to tell me its broken which obviously I already knew. They said it would cost over $500 to fix and replace. Had another mechanic look at it and he also advised do not go back and the price that Northern wanted to charge me was absolutely ridiculous! When they put the door panel back on they broke the lock on that door. Do not trust them. Find another more honest mechanic to go to.

There was another issue that was an expensive repair, and the mechanic was honest by telling me the issue wasnt an emergency or safety issue. Im so grateful I discovered Northern Auto. They have consistently gone above and beyond to provide me and my car the highest level of service Ive ever experienced. I made an appointment for 10:00 oclock for an oil change. I checked in at 9:55 and my vehicle was taken in at 10:15. Oil change and inspection took about an hour and a half, at which time I was invited to view what the inspection showed and an estimate for needed repairs. Walked in without an appointment and was ready to pay a couple of hundred for a schedualed repair. Just wanted a quote. They took it for a drive them put it on the hoist and found a loose screw. They took it for a ride again just to make sure it was all that was wrong. They fixed it while I waited.I am a happy customer who will return.

Anthony did a great job in a timely manner. If you are looking for a place that will charge you fairly and not make you wait 2 to 3 days for a fix this is the spot. They even clean your car and leave you a cookie!

Northern Auto is great- something I NEVER thought Id say about an auto shop. Everyone Ive encountered has been incredibly friendly, and everything they do is completely transparent. Ive never felt like they were trying to take advantage of my lack of mechanical knowledge or that I was being upsold on an unneeded repair. On top of that, they genuinely try to make everything as painless as possible with perks like rides to and from the shop and texts about what exactly theyre doing. I would absolutely recommend them to anyone.

Been going there for years. Perfect repair shop for women. They never tell you need lots of repairs when you dont. Rates are reasonable. Everyone there gives great service and you can actually talk to your mechanic and get tips on how to keep your car in tip top shape. The car care club is a real money saver. Thank you Northern!

Ive been bringing my car to Northern since moving to Berkley five years ago and have always received good service. I especially appreciated that the folks here were very willing to work with me on honoring a warranty for a part that failed and had to be replaced by another shop. At the other shop I felt as though they just wanted to get me out the door as quickly as possible, whereas Northern takes the time to address my concerns. Plus, as a special touch, they always leave a delicious cookie for you in your vehicle when you pick it up!

Brought my vehicle in for some maintenance. They advised me well on everything being done and got it done quickly. Very helpful people, I just moved to the area and I will be definitely using them again in the future.

Great place. I have been coming here for a year now, and I like that they send you pictures before they work. Went in today thinking my brakes needed to be replaced, they told me the brakes were fine and it was just the lubricant. Really nice, and always does a fantastic job.
