We went to Gumbo Diner over breakfast-lunch. We were the only ones there when we got there (~10:50) but it filled up as lunch hour started. Sharlene, our waitress, had big RBF (but me too sisterβ¦ so I donβt blame you one bit ππ) but was actually really sweet and attentive. She even boxed our leftovers for us, which doesnβt happen at many fancy places even anymore! The art inside is super original and cute.We had the Garlic Toast, Country Fried Steak, and a small [actually VERY large] bowl of Gumbo. The toast was good, but couldβve used more cheese π I personally like Perkinβs Country Fried Steak betterβ¦ but theirs wasnβt bad at all! We hadnβt had Gumbo before so didnβt have anything to compare it too, but thought it was pretty good too.Our biggest complaint was regarding whatever was going on with.. Corporate? Owners? Inspectors? β¦we werenβt sure who it was but there were 4-5 men walking in and out of the kitchen (which is open, so all of the guests can see in the kitchen, in the bar, around the tablesβ¦ just watching everyone but not saying anything. I felt bad for the servers and cooks because it felt like they were judging them HARD and just getting in their way. Doing whatever they were doing just made for quite a chaotic and distracting dining experience when the restaurant is pretty tiny to begin with.
First of all thank you Yvonne for your great customer service, thatβs a skill learned over time and you have mastered it! This place smells like great food is gonna come from the kitchen. The ambience is amazing and just made you wanna get up and start singing! Now to the foodβ¦ I came for the shrimp and grits and they were amazing just the right amount of cheese to grit ratioπ€ͺOf course the sign bragged about the chicken and waffle and it was delish as well. This is our first stop and the other restaurants have some big shoes to fill!
Great food. Great service. The best Cajun food we had outside of Louisiana. The restaurant is kind of limited with seating but does have a bar. We arrived at 9pm and received wonderful service by numerous staff. They worked as a well oiled. We purchased the Seafood Cuisine, Seafood gumbo, & two catfish platters. The quality of the food great as was the the portions size. The catfish portions were huge. They did not serve cut down fillets. You receive the whole side of the fish.
Delicious fried okra! Excellent Crawfish ΓtouffΓ©e!! Staff were each so very friendly. Our waitress, ex-Military, was absolutely the BEST!! She was βon topβ of everything!! SO enjoyed talking with her, in depth, after our wonderful meal. We would highly recommend eating here, hands down. And, we easily and pleasingly give them five stars. Weβll be going back for certain, our next time in Galveston, TX. πππππ
Friendly and welcoming locally owned diner with old school charm and the friendliest service possible. Many great seafood options with some Cajun flare. Tried several dishes and all were outstanding and authentic. Gotta give this place a try!
This was my first time trying this diner and the food was delicious π the shrimp in the shrimp and grits were a nice size and the grits were smooth and creamy. The pancakes were okay (I have had better), and the bread pudding was really good and great consistency ππΎ I will be visiting again the next time I am in the area.
The atmosphere and service are absolutely second to none. Very cozy spot, probably only 1 of 2 or 3 spots on the seawall that is decent and not Fertitta. You got to get you some fresh beignets on the way out, cause the portions are too big to have desert there. The actual preparation and presentation of the food is impeccable, but 4 stars for my only gripe. The seasoning is a little off/bland/salty. The menu features Louisiana-inspired dishes but the seasoning is much more diner than gumbo. No old bay or slap ya mama. Either way, will be back.
We went here 4 times during our vacay! Itβs soooo good. I got seafood gumbo, Baja fish tacos, hangover burger, and then breakfast. I also added pics of the crawfish etoufee and cajun pistolettes. It can get busy and they seem to be short on waiters, like every other restaurant in Texas right now. But our waiters/waitresses were attentive and kind.
I dont know if I tried this place on a bad day or what but what I had was not consistent with the reviews. I tried the Bourbon street platter to get a taste of several items at a good price. The bacon wrapped shrimp were a nice size and were good. It came with shrimp gumbo and it wasnt terrible but it wasnt good. For a place called the gumbo diner it could have been much better. I could only eat two bites of the crawfish etoufee. The etoufee sauce tasted like paste. The recipe is absolutely horrible! The jambalaya had thick chunks of tomato, bell pepper, and onion. Unacceptable. That should be cooked down way more and the seasoning on the rice was almost paste-like also. Another bad recipe. The green beans were way too crunchy. Maybe others like it that way but something else that couldve been cooked down longer in my opinion. The green beans on previous pics look different from mine. My husband had fried shrimp and fries and he did enjoy his meal which is why I gave them 2 stars. But fried shrimp and fries are hard to mess up. Overall I would not go back unless for breakfast. That may be much better.
Hey yall! If youre looking for a great diner in Galveston that doesnt cost a fortune π, this is the place. Great food and great service! I came here for breakfast and had the seafood omelet with cheesy grits. It was very tasty! Waiter was friendly and did his job with a smile! π (you could tell even with the mask on) Im telling you, this is a hidden gem next to The Commodore hotel. Ill definitely be going back and bringing friends!
Tried this place after a day of fun at the beach. Small and crowded, no clear guidance for ordering out or dining in. At the hostess podium, we were directed to the bar and looked through the menu to order. Items are overpriced. Pancakes and bacon were $12, pictured below, seafood platter in next picture was $20. Not enough seafood. The server asked us to wait in the car and they would bring it out, after about 15min, he only came with 3 entrees, we ordered 4. Overall the taste was bland but ok. Not sure what the specialty dish is but would try it full menu lacks promise. The best thing was the benignts.
The Gumbo Diner never disappoints! I had the bacon and eggs this time, delicious.I can also recommend the chicken and waffles, from previous visits.
Great service and awesome food at this casual and friendly diner. Huge portions, so be ready for that. I had the shrimp and cheese grits, which were awesome, and my wife had the Bourbon Street Platter and said the variety and flavors were both great. They also have delicious beignets that you can order to go of youre too full after dinner. Wed put this stop on your to-do list while in Galveston.
We came back and visited. Enjoyed breakfast very very much. I ordered the shrimp & grits. Almost..couldnt eat it all! I did though. Husband had the coastal cuisine. My other favorite. Please stop and try many choices to name.
Took my babe here, didnt know what to expect. Walked in, the environment was welcoming. Sat at the bar, Shakeita helped us out. Very friendly and good sense of humor. Didnt know what I wanted just yet...she came back, I was ready. Ordered the Bourbon Street Platter . The plate came, I wasnt ready lol. From the 1st bite of green beans to the gumbo, all the way to the shrimp... wrapped in bacon...with a juicy inside, slapped me in the mouth with its genuine taste and authenticity. Absolutely excellent, no other words to describe it. Absolutely EXCELLENT !! Will spread the word about this place and their incredible staff. Bonus - They also have BLACK chefs !!
The food was great but the pastry needs work. Thanks for being open later than mostπ
First morning on the island, and we stumbled on this place for breakfast. I have to say, this is one of the most delicious breakfasts we have had eating out!!! Huge portions, everything tastes fantastic, and the staff are super nice! Plus, you can see the coast from the window! Highly recommend.
Everything was so scrumptious!!! Omg the greeter was warm and kind as well as our waiter Charlene! My daughter loved her! We ordered pistolettes & fried pickles for appetizers. My husband had shrimp & grits and I had chicken fried chicken with Mac n cheese & green beans. It was so good Omg!! Weβll definitely be back next time we visit Galveston!
Great food wonderful prices I had breakfast at Miller seafood and grill and I liked Gumbo diner better for breakfast it Is not as fancy or pricey as Millers but the food was better. I had lunch shrimp platter my wife had the beach breakfast. She loved the cheese grits.
Who would have thought a place named Gumbo Diner would have amazing breakfasts! We didnt originally choose this place but there was a huge line so we were hunting for another breakfast place...and now we are so glad the other place was too busy. The staff was friendly here, the food was delicious and they even had beignets and delicious coffee. The serving sizes were large so come hungry!
I was kind of hesitant to try this place because some of the reviews. But Im glad we did! I dont remember our waitresses name but she was a young lady with long blonde hair, she was very sweet & made sure we were taken care of. I ordered 1 pancakes & glad I only ordered 1 cause they are big! I asked for extra butter & they delivered, most places give you cold butter. I also ordered my bacon extra crispy & it was done right the 1st time, I did not have to send it back. Eggs were cooked perfect too! My hashbrowns were a little too greasy for my taste but not horrible. Our waitress went out of her way to make sure the Dr. Pepper was fixed because it was flat. I have no complaints! Will definitely visit in the future!
ChloΓ© was WONDERFUL! Amazing service! Food came out quickly and way too much to finish in one sitting. Will DEFINITELY be going back here again.
Best gumbo, nice people, sleeper diner with casual atmosphere and good service.
Happened to be driving by looking for food and this place caught our eye. WE WILL BE BACK! Food was good, place was cozy. So glad we stopped. Cant wait til our next trip to Galveston.
I was a bit skeptical when I first walked into this quaint diner but by the time I walked out, I was full, happy and excited to tell someone about how awesome this place is.The atmosphere is very comfortable, easy to have good conversations in and well thought out seating placement. Its very colorful, and at the time of my visit they were adding holiday decorations. The menu is large but not in an overwhelming kind of way. They even serve all day breakfast. My friend tried the chicken and sausage gumbo, and the shrimp po boy, she raved about both! Make sure to get extra crakers for the gumbo too!I had the fish platter and was pleasantly surprised at the quality and freshness of the fish. Everything was piping hot and my cup never had the chance to get empty because my new friend Charlene took great care of us.This covid conscious beachside chill spot is a jewel in Galveston. If youre in the area stop through and tell Charlene I sent you!
Service was excellent. Our sweet waitress was attentive and courteous. Food was amazing! Establishment was clean and well kept.
Authentic Texas Gulf Coast style Gumbo. An amazing seafood restaurant with the casual ambience of a small town diner. The style is distinctively Galveston: casual, family friendly, and serving anyone who wants delicious Fish, Shrimp, Burgers and of course the Gumbo. My favorite is the Seafood Gumbo. I order the Big Daddy size if I am seriously hungry. The taste is authentic Texas style Gumbo, exploding the taste buds with flavor, and the included portions of shrimp, fish, oysters and more are generous to say the least.Gumbo Diner is easy to get to, appropriately close to some of the most well known restaurants along Seawall Blvd. Based on its atmosphere, service quality, value and taste, Gumbo Diner is right where it belongs. Bring an appetite!
Outstanding food and great service! Picked up a late night takeout order after a long day of travel, and my whole family loved the food. Some of the best cajun outside of Louisiana, and the best chicken and waffles Ive ever had. New favorite spot in Galveston.
Stopped in for breakfast and was not disappointed!!! Big portions and good prices. The food was great!! And so was the service.
Had breakfast with the family here on a busy Labor Day morning. Despite the crowd, the service was friendly and the food was good. Beignets were pretty solid, especially for a restaurant located outside of south Louisiana. Would recommend.
Friendly staff, relaxed diner type atmosphere. All of the food is excellent, I seriously canβt pick a favorite. When all the overpriced franchise restaurants nearby on the sea wall have 2 hour waits, do yourself a favor and stop on in the place. It is not overpriced and you can still get the seafood fare you are wanting while visiting Galveston. Some items to try: I would suggest their seafood omelet, macaroni, chicken fried steak and donβt leave without some beignets!
Food was good, great service. We tried the chargrilled shrimp and gumbo and enjoyed everything. A little pricey, but you are on the seawall with a view of the ocean. Service was friendly π
Great breakfast spot on the seawall. Our waiter Benjamin was very kind and attentive. The food was great! Perfectly cooked eggs and the grits were amazing! Well seasoned and freshly prepared. Great atmosphere and fun artwork. Well worth it!
Staff was very friendly and the food was amazing! A bit pricey but the seafood was fresh and delicious. Very much worth the money. Would definitely go again.
What I got was good; however, the rest of the group werent too fond of what they ordered. Small dining area.
This was one of those surprisingly really good places. We honestly went there because the neighbors had a long wait time so we decided to go try it. The food was great! Our server was amazing, gave him a very good tip. The place is small, cute and absolutely recommended!
This was my first time eating here, OMG WOW.... the food is absolutely amazing. I ordered the coastal cuisine (fried catfish over a bed of steamed rice and crawfish etouffee on top) and my date ordered the crawfish ettoufee, the portions were so big we didnt even finish half our food. We ordered the bbq oysters for a appetizer and let me tell you that was the best damn oysters I ever had. If you are ever in Galveston this is definitely a must try!
Tried this place for breakfast with the family. the food was sooooo good and the servers were seriously on the ball. Itβs not very big, so It got very busy by the time we left, Definitely worth a try and worth the wait if itβs a little busy. we will be back on our next trip to Galveston for sure.
One of the locals warned me of this spot but of course I didnt listen. I ordered chicken and waffles and a breakfast meal. Everything was bland or a little burnt. The food was so tasteless my children refused to eat it. Even the syrup was plain. I was greeted right away, restroom smelled good & staff were nice. If you love your food without flavor youd love this place.
Ordered to go. Yummy meal. The atmosphere reminded me of New Orleans.
Placed was booked. They put ya on a waiting listπ the music is nice they play but really to loud to have a conversation. Food is awesome!
This little restaurant is fabulous place to have breakfast. We didnt try their lunch & dinner menu but Im sure they would be fantastic at very affordable prices. Be prepared to wait outside as the dining room area is small plus you can also dine at the bar area while having great cocktails. It definitely is worth the wait!!!π
We loved Gumbo Diner!!! We went for Sunday brunch and we were not disappointed. Yvonne was the best server!!! She took very good care of us. The portions are huge. And its good food. You will be very pleased.
Second time going & both times have been very good! The first time I went, I had breakfast & this time I went for dinner. Had the shrimp/oyster poboy with fries. Super delicious! Our waiter was super nice as well & got all of our order correct. Would definitely recommend.
My husband and I come to gumbo diner every year on our way to Louisiana to visit family and we look forward to it every time. The restaurant was very busy. The manager checked on us and let us know the food was taking longer than usual. The kitchen seemed a bit understaff, the manager was running back and forth, cooking, cleaning, and speaking with tables. The food took almost an hour to touch the table, which isnβt how it has been in the past. The manager was handling this chaos well, if it wasnβt for his fantastic hospitality, Iβm sure half of the restaurant would have left without waiting for their food. Everything was delicious and hot, but the wait for the food was a bit too long. There was an older gentleman we are assuming was off for the night because he was sitting at the bar drinking several beers, yelling across the restaurant telling waitresses and waiters what to do. These actions made my husband and I feel very uncomfortable and we could tell other tables felt the same way. I thought it was very unprofessional for an assumed employee to be drunk at his place of work. Thanks gumbo diner for another delicious meal! Hoping next time we stop, we wonβt have to wait so long
Best place to eat gumbo. Consistently good. Great portions. Friendly staff.
We had breakfast here this morning prior to leaving Galveston! Usually we take pictures of our food but it was too yummy and we dove right in. We will be back!!! My husband had the shrimp and grits and I had the avocado toast
Wasnt sure what to expect from this cozy little Dinner by the ocean. The flavors and size portions had me leaving with a smile. Some of the best make you feel good food on the island. Service was fantastic! ππKeep up the good work everyone!
Excellent Po Boy. Very friendly staff.
