Wonderful local yarn and sewing shop, great selection of yarns and if you need large quantities for bigger projects they can order it for you. They also carry a lot of indie apparel sewing patterns that you cant get from big craft stores as well as gadgets and crafting accessories.

Homemak is awesome it has all the kinds of yarns you could ever want to imagine its like rainbow yarns its got alpaca llama yarns whatever you name it you yarn it all right here at home ec

Lots of wonderful yarn, but not much that is very affordable. I went when hours had changed due to covid, but it was not published online anywhere that people were not allowed to come in and look. Owner did not seem very pleased to have someone there to shop, even though it was not made clear that they were closed.

I am posting a few of the things that I have made over the past year that I have been taking classes at Home Ec. Each and every piece is something that I started--and finished--during a class that I took. I had been trying to get my quilting mojo back for over a year when I took my first class. No joy. But really the moment I started taking classes, I was back. it has been fantastic.

I love coming here. They carry high quality items and the staff is always friendly. I wish I could go every day!

If you are looking for a place where you can let your hair down and also get back to your natural roots, then set yourself up here. You wont be disappointed. The new location has plenty of space for sewers, knitters and quilters alike. The staff are knowledgeable, generous with their time and loving of your work. The fabric selection is outstanding with most of it from Japan, so you know you will be making something that nobody else will have. You wont be disappointed and will learn several skills to take with you for a long time coming.

They have really cute, unique fabric options plus beautiful local yarn. I have ordered online a couple times and shipping is really quick. It is definitely worth your time!

What a marvelous sewing and knitting shop! They offer so many fascinating classes. The Sat morning knitting group brings together people with many talents.

Where do I even start? I love this place! This place has always felt like a home to me in a way. Beautifully warm, welcoming, receptive environment and people. Ive taken several classes, bought many supplies here, and spent a good amount of time working on various projects. Home Ec never fails to brighten my life. You guys are the best, so sweet!

Good learning environment. A little crowded at times when multiple classes are going on, but most of the time its fine. Great yarn and fabrics! Cozy when not crowded. Nice people work there.

Wife loves this place for material selection and home-made yarn. For me they have both a great man-couch and man-chair 🙂

I LOVE Home Ec. It is up there with Prairie Lights as my favorite two shops in Iowa City. Codi and all her helpers are just the best. They seem to have time to answer any question, no matter how simple or complex, and to help you with any project youre working on. The fabrics are wonderful, the yarns beautiful, and the ambiance couldnt be nicer.

I could go on for days about Home Ec, and sometimes I do. The owners and employees are helpful, sweet and actually take the time to learn your name and greet you. The yarn and fabric is gorgeous, and the baked goods and quiche baked up by Sugar Lovin Mama Heidi are delicious. The employees and owners are wonderful about helping you find the pattern/yarn/needles/fabric that you need, even special ordering items for you. Ive taken multiple classes from them and they have the most lovely, patient teachers. They have a wonderful spot in the middle of the shop where you can snuggle up to a knitted polar bear or handmade pillows and knit/crochet/stitch/chat/craft your heart away while sipping on the best Chai Latte in town.

Home Ec. is my favourite place in Iowa City. Its where I made my first friends and found my first place in town when I moved here, and has continued to be a community Im thrilled to be part of! The yarn is carefully selected so even though Ive been in yarn stores that have more room for more stuff, I always find something that inspires me, or something just right when I have a special project in mind. They carry a good selection of workhorse yarns from Cascade and other brands for when you need a lot of something that wont make your piggy bank cry, and plenty of fancier fine yarns for when you really just need a little something indulgent. I knit much more than I sew but I always look through their fabrics and WISH I sewed more because theyre all so cute! They ALSO have a workshop with sewing machines, sergers, and other resources available for very reasonable rates - knowing that I can pop down the street and get my hands on a serger, or screen printing materials, or just some uncluttered workspace has really opened up the kind of creative projects I dare consider undertaking. Lessons in techniques and equipment are not prohibitively expensive, and the special classes offered every month are taught by some of the best craftspeople in Iowa. The baked goods and coffee are tremendous. The owners, staff, and regular customers are friendly, helpful, fun people to be around. Whether youre an IC resident or just passing through, dont miss this place. I havent met its equal anywhere.
