What a great place. Its a historic institution in Iowa City. Theres a varied and wide selection for breakfast and lunch. My son had a Reuben and I had a Mile High omelette. We both enjoyed our choices. Apparently, this is a hot spot on weekends so plan on a wait. Youll be glad you did.
First let’s start with Danny our server . Bubbly, fun, and efficient . Food and service was 10 out of 10 . Weekday, but diner was pretty full and now I know why . Highly recommend this place and the prices were very reasonable . $11 Salmon and Cream Cheese omelette loaded with salmon and cheese and red onions . Sides were Rye Toast and Hash Browns … Thank You Danny
All day breakfast and locally sourced items. This place was lovely! Great service, and knowledgeable of food items. The vibe was exactly what we needed after a long weekend on the road. Even scored me a mug to take home! Definitely coming back if I drive through again, to try the other items!
Best food its always on point never a miss with them..I literally come here once or twice a week I love this place..u cant go wrong coming here I promise
Excellent food. The Karakatoa is good and a mild spice. Pearla was an excellent server. A great smile and a wonderful attitude. She made it 5 stars as much as the food.
I love Bluebird! Great tasty food and amazing bluebird coffee. Servers are so nice and always check in to see if you need refills!
Nice staff. Food was good. Had the chorizo and eggs. It came with hash browns smothered by cheese and a side of salsa. Nice portion size, not too big and not too small.
Excellent place to go if youre in the area. We ordered breakdFast. Food was delicious and good proportions. It was steadily busy. Waitstaff could have been better but not horrible. Reasonably priced. We will DEFINITELY be visiting again.
Best breakfast in IC hands down. Cool environment with best food no matter what hou get. Its all good and perfect every time. I have been going here for 5 years and have yet to be disappointed.
Lots food for good prices, wait staff amazing, laid back vibe. Great place
Waitress and staff were nice. We werent greeted or given any directions. We stood there for at least 5min before we were told what to do. Outdoor seating only at this time. However the food was great. I ordered a Cuban and I was very happy with it. I love the originality of the place.
Online shows they are open for dine in. Theyre not. You order and get take out but you can eat on their outside patio with your take out boxes. Wanted chicken strips. Waitress suggested the kids chicken strip meal. 4 chicken strips. After eating 1 with ranch, I take a break one in half to share with my friend & only then did I see the chicken was completely raw. No exaggeration. Broke open the others...same. raw. This explains why the food came out so fast. The waitress was very apologetic and offered to take the price off the bill but I had already paid and just told her I just wanted to make the cook aware. Food poisoning was not a great way to start off vacation. I strongly suggest checking your food before taking a bite.
Raw sausage they tried passing it off as spices they used pink is raw will not go back
We arrived just as the restaurant opened, I was disappointed that we were told the inside seating was closed (although I did ask why one customer was seated inside, with no response). My 93 year old mother in law celebrated her birthday outside on a cool misty morning. Breakfast was served in take out containers and we cleaned our own table. Previously my meals have been great. This experience missed all marks. Hindsight is foresight, we should have gone to another establishment so we could enjoy our breakfast.
Loved the Krakatoa hash browns and good coffee! Nice vibes
Huge cinnamon roll with awesome frosting! Steak and eggs, biscuits and gravy, Popeye omelet, slammin salmon omelet, and eggs Benedict were all awesome. And service is fantastic. I highly recommend this Diner.
Put in an order online and they had it ready by the time I pulled up about 15 minutes later. The food was delicious and reasonably priced for the amount of food you get! I highly recommend the Eggs Benedict and pancakes.
In downtown Iowa City. A cute little diner. Limited seating. Outside sitting area. I ordered crab cakes. It came out burnt and dried. I did not complain. Shouldnt have to. A mediocre presentation. (See photo) I was expecting better. Also ordered a grilled cheese with NO fries. I got fries. I am willing to pay more for properly prepared food. But this was mediocre at best. I would like to try again. And try something new. But Ill have to see. Disappointing.
Our waitress was awesome. Pearla sp was awesome.
Fantastic food, we were all pleased with our meals. Great little place and you can feel the University atmosphere.
Great selection in the menue. Good and friendly service. Very fairly priced quality food. Generous portions well presented.
Service was excellent but was not impressed with the food. Was seated right next to the entrance outside. Kept having to swat flies away from my food. Home fries weren’t very crisp and overall food tasted a bland.
Great food. One of my favorite chill lunch places in town. The service can be spotty.
Outdoor dining was great. Burgers were fresh and made to order. Blt was delicious. Ghost pepper aoli is a must try.
Best breakfast Ive had in a long time.
We visit here at least once a month. Love the coffee and the bacon!
Pretty typical diner (I love diners, so thats a compliment), solid food, adequate coffee. Cleaner and brighter than most places.
Service was great! Fun place to visit!
Were told we would have a 30 minute wait. We were seated after 1 hour (after they took 10 minutes to clean an empty table). Kitchen was very slow. My food sat under heat lights for 10 minutes before being served; it was lukewarm. Another persons biscuit was RAW. Were done with this place.
The Atmosphere is Wonderful on Such a Sunny Day... Such a Cute Diner, Very Clean, Food Was Great! Staff was Wonderful!
Came from out of of town and did a pick up order of the chorizo with eggs and cheesy hash browns! Food was really good and fairly priced, staff was very friendly, and my food was done in great time!
The food didnt taste all that good and the service was terrible. Had to flag waitress down every time we needed something.
If I could leave No stars for this I would! Hash browns are supposed to be crispy NOT WET PILES OF POTATOES! BISCUITS NOT HOMEMADE are better out of tube...sausage gravy is supposed to be sausage broke up in the gravy not just a half cooked sausage patty. Worst breakfast I ever had. I threw it in the garbage with only 2 bites of eggs.
As of June 1 theyre open for dine in. You also may enjoy their outdoor patio. We had a lovely talk with the owner Bill. Theyve begun making their own bread. Our The St. Blue was served on house made sour dough. Both Slamin Salmon were both delicious.#IowaCityHome #shoplocal #ShopSmall #icdd #iowacityiowa #iowacity #iowa #freedeliveryicdd #bluebird
Delicious. Kid friendly. A must go too.
I experienced some (perhaps unintentional?) racial bias there. They directed a white couple to the last empty table on their patio while I was there first. They never informed me that I could sit down at a table before placing my order. Thumbs down to a place that treats an older Asian as transparent.
Maybe the best eggs Benedict Ive ever had.
Food was very good. Service was a bit slow. Wish their take home containers were biodegradable.
Loved it. Good food & service
Staff very friendly and helpful with my food allergen questions. Food was delicious. Ordered to go and sat on the patio to eat..was very nice
Wonderful little diner slightly off the beaten path. Very delicious and a wide variety of options. While they are typically known for the breakfast, we decided to have lunch today. I got the pork tenderloin sandwich with fries, which was pretty tasty. The dining area was busy but that is to be expected at lunch as its well known among the locals. I would recommend giving this place a try. Its definitely not a chain restaurant.
Very unique menu! A must try for sure!
Food was great! Very good breakfast! The mimosas were excellent also! The cinnamon french toast was absolutely amazing!
Best omelets this side of the Mississippi, and the coffee is second to none. Everyone, go eat brunch here. Awesome diner atmosphere! And all the food is made from scratch! Writing this review is making me hungry.
They offer a wide variety of options for breakfast. Truffles and eggs and eggs Benedict with hollandaise sauce are options. The gravy on the chicken fried steak has too much smoke flavoring. The Blue Bird special is the standard eggs, meat, hashbrowns and toast. The ham steak is lean and very tasty. The staff is friendly and very helpful.
Dining is still outside only. But the food and service are fantastic. Price is right on for portion size.
I had a delicious Reuben today! It was done quickly and is so good. Also the soup was marvelous and, I just want to say for the record -- BEST Mac n Cheese in IC!
Great old-fashioned Diner experience!!! Bring your appetite!!
Food was okay. The seats were very crowded and the place was loud. Could not have a conversation with my party without shouting. Might go back for sitting outside but nothing that I felt was a must go back.
On three different occasions I’ve been hung up on when ordering food over the phone. Understandable happening one time, but numerous times is a habit/flaw. Customer service is terrible.
Best breakfast in Iowa City. Eggs benedict and pancakes are what my wife and I typically order, but you can’t go wrong with anything on the menu.
Delicious food...excellent service...nice vibe.
Best eggs Benedict Ive ever had.
Great service and delicious food! Their eggs Benedict are fantastic!
Really goodFrom out of town stopped there for some breakfast
Good food and great service, the flies inside the restaurant are overwhelming and made the experience unpleasant as they kept landing on my party and the food. Hopefully there will be a solution soon.
Great place for carry out breakfast. Tables right outside where you can eat.
Great veggie omelets and sourdough toast.
Really good breakfast food! You can get something traditional or unique. The bacon, eggs, and hashbrowns were really good. All-in-all a really great diner
Got the Traditional Eggs Benedict it came with hashbrowns and REAL hollandaise. It was so incredible. The hashbrowns and toast were also on point. Was literally dancing in the car it was so good. I stop here everytime we are in town for doctors appointments. Didnt realize until after we left that they even have a heated patio so you can eat outside! Great spot. Breakfast all day, you cant beat it.
Based on others reviews I had high expectations for this place, but unfortunately the pancakes were way too eggy!🍳
Always great food and service.
Omelet goodBurger tastelessSaw cook lick his fingers and no gloves on no one.I hope he didnt touch my food.Because of that I wont be back for a while.to many other choices to eat.
Good great, drinks great! Service was fantabulous!
This place has a great sense of humor and has fabulous food. The menu is funny (the wine section is titled drink it or we will) and creative (it has your classics and then some mix ups like the eggs benedict florentine I ate). Its super tasty and fun and would suggest for any time youre in Iowa City. Plus, its right next to all of the shops so fill your parking meter up extra so you have time to walk off your food. I can imagine it gets very busy during peak times because it was busy when we went for Wednesday brunch so plan for that but they try to get you seated and served as quickly as they can.
Food is good but it is a bit pricey in my opinion.
Bluebird Diner is an absolute gem in downtown Iowa City. Bonus, there is ample street parking and a lot adjacent to the building. They have delicious omelets (Krakatoa!), and entree specials. Our kids LOVE Bluebird because they can get pancakes any time of day. Gluten free options are plentiful, celic-safe, and excellent service. Highly recommend! Make sure you grab a bag of their coffee for next weekend. Its delicious. ALSO, THEY HAVE GLUTEN FREE PANCAKES.
Visited in December of 2019 for breakfast. Food was amazing however it took quite a while to get to us and they probably could have used a few more wait staff. Seemed as if they each had to take many tables. Restaurant was very clean and staff was very friendly. Bathrooms were small and dimly lit, having some brighter lights would really help.
Breakfast food is phenomenal.
Delish breakfast sandwiches, it was a good meal while we road trip, unfortunately they forgot forks for the hash browns and napkins but we made do. Curbside pickup was fast and easy.
