Sadly, the docent ruined our experience from the start. I came in with seven art students during Art Hop. There was an interactive exhibit in which patrons could use an app on their phone or use provided tablets. A few of the students used the tablets, and the docent followed them like they were shoplifters. I had a question for her and tried to get her attention three times (I am a 50-year-old woman dressed in business casual attire for reference) before she literally gave me the hand. She apologized and said she had to keep the tablets in her sight at all times. She even pointed at two of my kids, rolled her eyes, and shook her head. I told her they were with me. She began backtracking immediately, but too late. First, never judge a patron like that. Second, she’d make a better mall cop than a museum docent. I’m disappointed that this was some of the kids first KIA experience.

This fine Institute always amazes you with every visit. It is fun to go to several times a month. They always have new exhibits and the permanent ones deserve several viewings. The gift shop will tempt you with the many items they offer for gifts or for you home. You will always be rewarded and stimulated during every trip.

Small local museum in the heart of Kalamazoo. The first floor had lots of local artists creations being showcased. There were several interesting pieces on display. But the real prize was the permanent gallery displays in the basement. They had a wonderful selection of art pieces that had been donated by private donors from a variety of time periods and using a variety of mediums. The art ranged from ancient through modern. Not a huge collection at all. But several really nice pieces that together constitute a collection worth spending an hour or two to see!

Super nice place and its only $5 to get in and look at some beautiful artwork by so many artists. I spent most of the two hours we had left in town looking at the art. This sculpture of a human figure was one of my absolute favorite in the hole gallery and this was done by a young artist in Kalamazoo.

There are always unique and excellently curated special exhibits here. The recent exhibit of quilts was great, and I always enjoy the works by local artists. It is one of my favorite places to visit when in Kalamazoo. In addition to the great art, dont miss the gift shop, which always is great for cute Christmas gifts.

My children took summer art classes here a few yrs ago & they had an awesome experience, which is why I rated a 4 instead of a 3..Brought my grandkids to see some artwork this past weekend and even tho it wasnt very busy, security didnt seem friendly with us at all. Theyre not the type of kids to run around and act wild/crazy in public because I dont allow that, so Im not sure what their problem was. Guess Ill just write it off to the security ppl being young and probly not having kids of their own or any experience around young ones (2½&5). Thats not exactly good for business though...

If youre concerned about safety from COVID, the staff and security were a bit over the top for me, but for those with concerns, you will feel comfortable. I didnt care for the art pieces, they seemed very dark and disturbing. The venue is small and you can move through very quickly. Not a favorite and wouldnt recommend or go back.

If you love art, or are raising your children to have a love for art, then this is just the place for you. They have quite a collection in their gallery, and even have a cool little playroom downstairs for children to play in and get creative. They also offer art classes for all ages. My son attended an art class a while ago and it was amazing. The teacher was very friendly, as are all the other employees that I have talked to there. Highly recommend.

Kalamazoo Institute of Arts is a historic institution and Kalamazoo Michigan which was founded for the Arts force and has really done a lot for the community in promoting and maintaining the pursuit of the visual arts. I have attended at least 5 semesters on scholarship at Kalamazoo Institute of Arts. I would not be able to afford good training without the scholarship. I am very grateful to Kalamazoo Institute of Arts for their generosity and quality.
