I walk with the dog here in the mornings. Its quiet and peaceful. There is a wooden walkway that leads to the Uncompahgre River. Ive spotted cranes, geese and ducks on the river. Lots of people like to start river trips from this spot. On the other side of the road is the museum. The architecture is alluring and the museum has interesting and informative displays. Children enjoy exploring the many yurts built on the grounds. There is a trail beyond the grounds that lead to Riverbottom and Cerise Park.
Very informative smaller sized museum. You will learn a lot about the Nuche/Ute people. Recommend if you have any interest in native American history. Adult admission is a bargain at only $6 and the gift shop is full of beautiful hand beaded pieces and real jewelry.
Interesting hands on exhibits, videos and mixture of contemporary and traditional art. Very moving experience for the family.
Carly was amazing and very knowledgeable! Great place to learn about the Natives here in Colorado. The gift shop was full of beautiful jewelry and other works of Native American art!
I took a bead bracelet class and the experience was something I will never forget. Amerson is an amazing human.
Very informative. Great displays explaining the origins, traditions, history and hardships of the Ute people. I appreciated the focus on Ouray and Chipeta and their influence both then and now. Highly recommend this museum.
A gem of a museum. This museum was recommended by a local and it did not disappoint. Excellent text and a film described the history of the Ute. I particularly was interested to see an example of a resin coated basket. They have some beautiful clothing on display. There is also an excellent gift store
Excellent history of the Ute tribe. Well displayed & easy to self tour. VERY informative.
Great photos and exhibits. Very good storybooks
Came because a room was rented for a celebration of life service,(funeral).. Lady working at the front counter was EXTREMELY RUDE to us. If you dont want to accommodate guests for room rentals then stop having them! I would NEVER recommend this place EVER for ANYTHING!
If you traveling through Montrose, Colorado, you have to stop here. This little museum is dedicated to lives and culture of the Ute People. You can learn much about their oak histories, traditions and hardships as well as the Ute Nation today. Theyre gift shop is a must see as well. I highly recommend this place for anyone wanting to learn about Native cultures.
Relatively small museum housed in a relatively new building. Interesting artifacts. Lots of tepees on the property make it a good place for families to stop during road trips. There is a walking trail / bike trail right behind the building and a small but pleasant park across the street. Shady places to sit and picnic.
An amazing museum guided by the voices of the Ute people themselves! One of the best places to visit in Montrose!
Fantastic museum. A must visit in order to understand the Ute people who have inhabited this region for thousands of years. Wonderful artifacts.
Small museum, but good location and very cheap. Covers really interesting facts about the Utes that you won’t find in many other museums.
The most beautiful museum...the most amazing staff.
Great find with numerous interesting artifacts and displays. Although small the story of the Utes and other tribes was beautifully told and I left inspired.
Authentic experience. Extremely nice and informative staff. They were eager to get our family involved in the educational activities available there. Locally made architectural elements throughout the small museum. Our family learned much.
Beautiful displays. They had four Remington sculptures, which was an unexpected find!
Should see! Always remember the Indians-
Enjoyed this Ute Indian History. We spent 2 1/2 hours here looking at artifacts and videos.
Very informative. Made me feel embarrassed with the way we treated Native Americans.
A wonderful museum presenting an in depth perspective of the Ute Indians lives as white settlers moved west. Chief Ouray and his wife Chipeta are featured.
Love taking out of towers here! Renovation was awesome!
It was such an exhilarating experience, so tranquil with the native flute music playing overhead. It was very informative and I FELT SO CLOSE TO MY ROOTS AND AT PEACE HERE. IT WAS GREAT FOR THE SOUL ♡♡Thank you to everyone who had a hand in putting this museum together it is very well done!!!!🙏🙏💜💜😊😊😊
Didnt go inside. It is a nice walk with some interesting displays.
Very much enjoyed our visit here and learning so much about the Ute culture and history.
Was a great experience. Really learned a lot and loved touring the facility. Fun walking in the teepees and thinking what a winter would have been in that hundred years ago.
Oldest inhabitants of the middle Colorado mountains and plains. The Ute indian history and handiwork were well described and exhibited. We spent about an hour watching a short video and after, reading and viewing the displays. We spent a half hour in the gift shop! The jewelry and bead work was eye-catching and fairly priced. I particularly looked at the books on folklore, stories and legends. I would recommend a visit.
Very informative and many unique displays .
Wow! What a history lesson!!! This place is very interesting and educational all in one. Thanks to the wonderful staff for making us feel welcome and creating such an extraordinary exhibit for us to learn from. Go see it, you will not be disappointed.
Great place peaceful I often find myself visiting 😌
There is a huge amount of information tucked in this small museum.
Lots of pictures. Lots of clothing. I sew and the workmanship was amazing! It gave a different viewpoint of the American Indian. I am almost ashamed how the Indians were treated! There was a tepee outside for kids and jewelry and clothing for sale inside. Jewelry was authentic. Nice outing!
Very informative museum. Great history of the Ute Indians.
A must see with articles and artifacts of the local history. Very well designed.
An enlightening history of the Utes in Colorado and beyond.
Was a nice museum the outdoor walk by the river was beautiful. My kids loved going in and out of all the tepees.
Friendly staff and amazing history preserved and told. A must see.
Tells a good story of Ute indians.Small but well laid out displays. Good for kids to know the colorsdo history. Shop has good items.
I loved the outside exhibit.
Nice location and grounds. The museum and gift shop looked nice, new, and clean. The cost to get in is 6.00. Go and support this work.
Proud and knowledgable staff, good displays and stories, clean facilities, good wifi. The gift shop has amazing jewelry crafted by real and reputable tribe members.
Beautiful sensory experience
Cool place to learn something new. Come on there are teepees setup outside
I cant give it any less than a perfect rating. So much time has been spent beautifying and instilling historical information into this quaint little Museum and rec. area. Its a tranquil spot that has The Great Spirit flowing through n through!
A must see if you are in the area and have any desire to learn of the original inhabitants of Colorado. Surprised to find out this is actual a state run museum. Kudos to the state for their recognition of the native peoples. Friendly folks at the front register - ask about the military discount (free entry). Excellent displays and numerous artifacts on display. Educational, informative and at times disturbing, as any honest look at Native American history can be. Interesting grounds, including a boardwalk to the river across the street.
The entry fee was quite a bit for what you actually see. I took my 10 yr old nephew who was bored out of his mind. There really isnt a lot for kids to do. There items for sale were out of my price range for sure. I guess its a nice attempt at history, just dont expect a lot from it.
Didnt get to watch the movies. Kind of wished there was a tour guide. For a museum it totally works. The art work was amazing!
We couldnt go through the museum because of limited amounts of people are allowed. Understandable but disappointing as we were looking forward to touring it. We were traveling so we couldnt wait to be in the next group.
A small well done museum. Good introductory film, wonderful gift shop.
The museum itself is a tidy setup with about the right amount of information. Its not so big with so much data as to make it daunting. By the time one reaches all the way around the not-too-big rooms, one gets a sense of understanding of the Ute tribe, its history, its place on the land, and the movement to and fro of its people. The garden, although spacious, could use some upkeep. Many of the benches and outdoor tables are badly in need of repair.
The museum is very educational and interesting. The grounds are nice to walk and there is a great gift shop. You can also host events here. We had our wedding here and it was amazing! Everything you need in one place, beautiful setting and fantastic staff.
The least of tribute for all who deserved better.
The Ute Indian museum is a great cultural center, learn about the native Indians who lived here. It also has a great park with pathways and a small lake nearby. It has a gift shop inside that has something of interest for anyone. Jewelry, books, blankets, art, musical instruments and much more. If you havent been to the newly remodeled facility I think youll enjoy the visit.
Beautiful inside and out...Friendly and great gift shop
This is one of the finest Indian museum that I have visited. I bring bus loads of students here yearly and always love to see the exhibits. The people here are exceptionally friendly.
This inside is a little smaller than i remember and you have to really read it. In order to enjoy the exhibits... they need more artifacts out less technology.... loved the music playing it sets the mood. And the bathrooms were clean. Plus the remodel is pretty great. I would like to see more things in the gardens. And perhaps. More anout the Utes and natives that lived in the region. It was an overall great experience the atmosphere was like being at the campfire ready for the elders to tell a story. Wish i could have spent all day!🖤❤💗
Everything is very well displayed. The sensitive items are behind glass so people wont touch them. That came in handy as we brought 22 kids to visit! We had scheduled a tour, but they forgot to out us on the list and didnt have anyone there to run it. We were bummed, but we made the most of it. Luckily our lead teacher remembered the sign language and was able to do that activity without their help.
Beautiful Museum. I learned so much more about history of the valley in that small amount of time than I could have anywhere else. Ill be back.
Beautiful exhibits and building. Very educational.
This is one of the best Natove American museums Ive had the pleasure of visiting. Several touch screen monitors with short videos explaining different aspects of Ute culture, a 22 min movie to watch incredibly informative. The store has so much in such a small space. I cannot believe how the time got away from me. If you love museums and learning this is a must see!!
This place is beautiful. We went on the free day, but if we had paid it would have been with it. The staff are amazingly knowledgeable. Truly worth the experience
Loved it
Staff was very nice and helpful. Small museum but very well laid out and so much information. I learned so much and enjoyed all the visuals and videos they had. Great little gift shop if you want to buy something unique and special! Definitely recommend if you are close to Montrose.
Wonderful with lots of good displays.
Wonderful dedication to the indigenous people of Montrose still makes me a little sad though awesome 4 teaching the kids
Very nice since they have remodeled the building. Would recommend to anyone seeking a little culture in there life.
Excellent! Informative! Worth an hour all day!
Lovely small museum with well done personal stories. The videos are a great way to hear about Ute history and life from those who lived it. The gift shop has some nice pieces for anyone interested in Native American history.
My wife and I were so impressed and moved by the museum. The new building is amazing, a beautiful structure. The exhibits were moving and very informative. Great place to be; Id suggest about 90 minutes to experience it.
They were GREAT! Even gave my nieces and I a special discount so we could afford to experience the property. Thank-you for your graciousness.
The updates that this museum has done since I was a kid are amazing! I highly recommend visiting! Beautifully done!
This place is amazing! Tomorrow 4/20/19 an Earth Day event is going to be there! The museum is gorgeous, they have family activities, I will be going back again and again!
Kind people. Lots of things to look at, read, and learn. Some times events are held here in the room to the side. Theres a small parking lot in front of the building and another small parking lot across the street in front of the building. Its friendly and accessible to all people.
I love the real history you get here the ladies are amazing and will tell you so much about their people and the way they do. I would go back 100x
Beautifully organized and informative. Nice bathrooms. Interesting gift shop.
It was very informative about the Ute tribe. The beautiful jewelry, the artistic beading was awesome, the people were very nice. It was very clean. I would recommend visitors to stop by.
Beautiful landscape!!
