I came across this cafe on the way to the Northern NY, and it was beyond my expectations. A small stoned-shelter matched well with its peaceful surroundings, and has cozy inside, very kind waitress, nice coffee and meals.. everything is good. Being worth stopping by when youre near.

Celebrated our 17th Anniversary here on a Friday evening. Owner was super-attentive, food was great (braised short ribs, YUM!) The setting was beautiful, and the apple pie with caramel drizzle...amazeballs.

Pricey, but excellent staff, at least who Ive interacted with. Beautiful girl at the door with a lovely personality, as well as a gentleman with a winning amount of charm also. Only sour note to me and my party was the ending bill - $14 for a chicken patty on a burger roll with bacon and American cheese? Really? $3 hot chocolate? Hopefully they do realize that no matter how special they may feel or act, aint where youre from its where youre at. Youre a couple of blocks away from the same chicken sandwich and fries plus a soda for $5.

Such a nice surprise exploring the park for the first time and coming across this beautiful little cafe. They have a full menu of coffee beverages, and gorgeous indoor and outdoor seating overlooking the pond and an outside ice cream cart. It was too late in the day for coffee and I was too full from lunch to try the ice cream but I can’t wait to come down and enjoy both!

I love the Shelter house Cafe, it’s a wonderful place, and a much-needed spot in the area. great staff, awesome menu, and the view of The beautifully restored Downing Park and pond can’t be beat! I eat there every week! If you’re a fan of local history or architecture it’s a must visit destination - you may be lucky enough to chat with knowledgeable, friendly owner Stephen!

This place could be amazing if management properly trained the waitstaff. Although sweet, my waitress was oblivious to the daily selections of the day (quiche, soup, cheeses). Had to check with someone inside whenever I asked about something on the menu. Didnt know the wines, didnt know what a Pour Over was when I ordered one. I can go on and on. Even when asked for fresh pepper and salt for my salad, she said she had to ask. Very odd experience. Food was okay..I was disappointed.

Its hard to match such a magical setting but everything here is perfect in my book. Whether you just want coffee and a pastry or breakfast or lunch or a glass of rosé with a cheese plate at the end of day. Food is fresh and tasty and the staff is warm and welcoming and the music has just the right vibe. Thank you Shelter house for bringing this historic spot to life in just the right way and making Downing Park the destination it deserves to be.

A cozy stone house recently repurposed as a cafe in the center of Downing Park. Romantic views of the pond and a nice place for a date with wine beer list and a bistro type menu. Some live music events, usually jazz. Low key small place. Summer outdoor patio seating and Janes ice cream!

The view and restoration of building is great! The food has the potential to be awesome but this time, the eggs were overcooked, bacon was hard as rock, and server was waaay off her game. Albeit, she was very pleasant. Cappuccino was excellent and parked on street very close. Our avocado was mostly blackened.. When returned we never got a replacement and at the end of visit were told, its because theyre out of season. Then take it off the menu guys.. We want to see this place succeed but in this business you cant have bad days...

I love this little coffee shop snuggled in Downing Park. They have a very relaxing environment and a great view of the pond right outside. In the winter its a a beautiful view watching the pond through the big arching windows; and in the summer the outside seating is simply the best thing ever. Charlie, the barista, is the most fun and sweet person youll meet at a coffee shop. The entire staff is great actually up to the owner Steve and his little baby lol. The chef is a funny guy who must have been a comedian in his previous life. I recommend this place to anyone who loves chill coffee shop with great tasting coffee. Oh and if you like some coffee making artifacts, they have one or two ancients pieces on display in there. Cheers ☕

This beautiful stone house is located in a park in Newburgh, N.Y. Its name: Downing Park.If you are dining here, you may not realize the parks notable history. It was designed by two of America’s foremost 19th-century landscape architects, Frederick Law Olmstead and Calvert Vaux. The gentlemen were commissioned by the City of Newburgh in 1889 to design the park in honor of their late mentor Andrew Jackson Downing, who had perished in a horrible boating accident on the Hudson River.Downing born and raised in Newburgh achieved fame as a distinctive style-maker whose influence from his perch in Newburgh resounded throughout America in the 19th century influencing both landscape design and residential architecture, some of which can still be seen in Newburgh’s East End Historic District.Visitors to the Shelter House enjoy fabulous views of the living museum that is the park. Olmstead and Vaux of course famously designed Central Park, for which Downing had, prior to his demise, received a commission. The food at The Shelter House is quite good, there are often (especially in summer) evening performances, and the interior space has a charm of its own, besides its location.A wonderful place for brunch or lunch, or an evening snack. Or an evening enjoying a glass of wine and a musical treat. Photo used by permission and created by Newburgh Photographer John Leighton.

Downing Park is one of the most beautiful parks in the area. Designed by Olmstead, it could be such an asset to the area, but I dont feel it is safe to go there in the daylight, let alone late afternoon or early morning. It has all the elements to make it a safe, fun place for people to gather, like Central Park in NYC, but the security is just not there. Why take a chance on getting you or your parked car robbed, when there are other places to go with your family? Too bad, but that is the story of Newburgh. I love the expanse of Broadway down to the river, the new campus, the library, the Karpale document museum and many of the shops on Broadway. I love the historic, bricked street architecture and there is a great variety of restorable, beautiful buildings, but the crabs in the pot keep pulling those trying to escape poverty back into the boiling water. There have been a lot of attempts to clean it up, but they all fail too soon. Too bad.
