WHAT A JOKE! Horrible customer service, totally ignorant of their trade, and an UNETHICAL RIP OFF for scrap metal exchange rates.I recently visited this store to sell a large sterling silver spoon I had come across. It was early in the afternoon when I came through the door of the cramped shop, but it was totally empty. I called out several times as I approached the counter, but no employee answered. I waited at the counter a moment and called a few more times, but nothing. I waited a moment longer, then noticed something on the other side of the counter window near the floor, something that looked like a foot in a sock... I leaned forward a bit and discovered the sole employee at the store, fast asleep on a cot almost hidden from view. Hey man..., are you open? I asked rather loudly. He stirred, looked at me, and reluctantly stretched and yawned before slowly finding his glasses and standing up to the counter window. I handed over my 52 gram sterling silver spoon and he looked at it a moment before saying, I dont think this is silver. No, Im pretty sure its sterling silver, I replied. He looked at it again before taking a file to the back of the spoon and grating off a bit of the surface before applying the chemical test to determine weather it was in fact real silver. He waited a moment and then meekly repeated, I dont think that its real. No, Im pretty sure its sterling silver... the patina looks right, the weight feels right, and the stamp on it says .925 STERLING. He told me that to test it again, he would need to cut it in half. I said OK, and 5 more minutes of testing later, he finally agreed that it was in fact sterling silver. So I asked him how much he would give me for it, knowing that the price of silver was just above $16 per ounce, or right around $0.50 per gram. Given that the spoon weighed almost 2 oz, I was expecting just about $20. The owner of the spoon and told me $7.50. I blinked at him and ask him, Are you serious? $7.50. I told that was an unethical rip off and took my two pieces of half spoon. Later that day I went to Oakland metal and gold on Piedmont Ave which is where I usually bring my scrap metal, and they quickly identified that it was real sterling silver and gave me $20 and some change. A word to the wise: avoid Cash for Gold like the plague. Instead, go to Oakland Silver and Gold for all your scrap exchange needs - theyve always given me excellent customer service and by far the best exchange rates for my scrap silver and gold.
