My absolute favorite. Every time Ive been to Pittsburgh, I have visited Salems and I just loved it. I like the grill section better than the curry. Truth be told, the curry isnt that great. They make the best steak Ive ever eaten for the price ($16). I eat exclusively halal, so my sample size isnt very big and therefore take my opinion with a grain of salt (and pepper, pun intended). Last time I tried grilled red snapper, it was very good too. The portion is very generous. Keep up the good work.
Great, restaurant/grocery store. The Establishment is clean, well organized, outstanding staff members! All of their personalities are great! Customer friendly!!. I dont mind spending my money with such great service and outstanding food!!. Theres no second-guessing on where Im going to eat when Im out or even dining at home. Thank you for such a outstanding, place to eat in the city of Pittsburgh.
I am so thankful that we found this little gem while in town. We were driving by and decided to stop because the food smelt so good from the road! Went in and let me say Salems Market and grill did not disappoint!Kwame was behind the counter and was super cool and kind he offered samples for whatever we wanted to try and made recommendations based on what we were looking for. The portions we got are unreal for the price. Tikki masala and spinach were bob on and rice cooked perfectly. I also love the fact that they give roti with the meal, love it! We got take out but the inside is quiet and cozy next time we will dine in.If you’re in town do yourself a favor and try this spot out. I highly recommend, Thank me later!
Every time I order takeout from Salem’s it lasts me three meals. Their food is delicious, and portions are very generous! Everyone I have taken there has also loved it. My personal favorite would either be the chicken tikka masala or the grilled chicken. I always get pita and hummus, too.In addition to the meals they serve, they also have uncooked food for purchase and a market attached. Their uncooked kabobs would be great for a cookout!
We love this place! We live about an hour away but usually come every couple months to eat here. The food is always worth the drive, and we know we won’t be disappointed! We came in November and also in January, and even though they didn’t have seating inside, they had metal tables and chairs outside, and we just went on “warmer” winter days and wore warm clothes.
They have grilled items and bowl items and they give immense quantities! I am a non-vegetarian through and through, but I enjoyed the paneer-spinach curry here, the most. For those of you who dont know, paneer is akin to Tofu, but much softer and easily picks flavors, so its way more tasty. I recommend everyone to try the paneer-spinach curry at Salem at least once. The chicken items for the bowl were good too. My friend ordered the veggie-kebab bowl the other day, but that did not really live up to the expectations. Another star find here is the Desi shawarma chicken sandwich/roll. It was huge and absolutely tasty. I sat on one of the outside tables to eat, and passers-by couldnt help exclaiming how delicious and huge it looked! They do have the regular shawarmas too, but I havent tried those yet. They have ample seating both inside and outside, and the crowds are proof of their good food and service.
If you like your food saturated in palm oil you will enjoy ...(not sure if that’s what they use or not)but everything is soaked in oil. Chicken is dry, yet it’s soaked in oil. Lentil soup doesn’t have any broth only oil. Veggie curry, more like oil curry slop. EVERYTHING TASTED LIKE OILLLLL!!!! It was my choice to order from here but this message intended only for the chefs in the kitchen... call the food what it is and quit lying to the consumers, I have heart burn after one bite... this is crazy.... all of the vegetables tasted like rubber and oil... no flavor no love.... just oil....terrible!!!!P.S. I didn’t receive my entire order, it’s ok though, I would have just thrown it away with the rest of the slop...waste of time and money...there’s a sign that states for the customer to wait for the cashier to call on you before you approach the counters, yet they sit and look at you until you finally(get fed up with looking at the sign) and decide to approach them.....this is happening all over Pittsburgh..it’s not just at this location...people are just unhappy and over worked....
As far as I can tell this is the only and best place in Pittsburgh to get legit Biryani of all types, including goat (the GOAT of biryani). Salem’s is an absolute gem! They are always quick and the staff are always so friendly. You can’t go wrong with Salem’s!
They have a fresh off the grill menu and already made items.. Soups and sides. Chicken, beef, lamb, and goat.. Really good and they guy serving ( i forgot his name) was really helpful. He explains and recommends.. The workers were really helpful and nice..everyone had smiles and they keep it clean.. Use gloves and hairnets.. Wonderful experience for my first time.
Today i visited Salem Halal Market restaurant. This was my first time eating their food. And YES the food is definitely Delicious. Customer service from the food server to the cashier was very nice and professional. I will definitely return. And refer the business.
Its been remodeled since the last time I visited before pandemic. So in that year time they fixed it up very nice.
One of my favorite places to eat in Pittsburgh. The food is incredible, the atmosphere is lively. A great place to go & have a meal with you family or by yourself.
This place is located in the Strip district. Theres no discrimination, people from all walks of life enter and enjoy the atmosphere, each other and the food which is to die for. If you like lamb, beef, fish, chicken, goat...seasoned for all to enjoy (fried, baked or grilled). Get down to this place, bring your family. The owner and crew are pleasant, customer base and shows great interest in you wanting to learn and share with them. If I keep spending my money, Im going to ask for partnership. The food is fresh, great taste and enough seating and parking. Come to the strip and indulge the great taste of Salem. The Red snapper with rice and vegetables is my favorite.
I’ve been living here for a couple years and this is my go-to spot for meals and groceries. The premarinated meats saved me a lot of meal prep time and the halal steaks are the best. The red snapper they sell is fresh and huge. Other cities aren’t lucky enough to have this selection and convenience
Salems is one of the best spots Ive frequented in Pittsburgh. The food is always fresh, and delicious. The staff is very friendly and prompt with your orders. Its always a great experience at Salems
I was on a cross country road trip. Stopped in Pittsburgh, PA for lunch break. 2 days before getting there, I was looking good halal option in Pittsburgh since we will have to stop for break and lunch. I have to say, I was blown away from experience in Salem. The whole block is owned by them. They got groceries supermarket next the restaurant . I believe there was a educational center within their facility. However, the food was amazing. (Might be the reason, I didnt get decent food for couple days😄.) I got the goat biriyani with spicy. Im not lying when I am saying their biriyani was probably the best biriyani I tasted in last couple of years. Perfectly cooked Basmati rice(I believe), the meat was juicy and well seasoned. The sherma platter was great too. I loved the steak . Little bit well done but I was juicy inside . we were supposed to take break for 1 and half hour. But end up taking 4 hours for a big full meal and a little nap. In NYC, we have great food options, but I might drive 16 hours for just to eat here again.
So much amazing delicious food, fast service, and incredible people.
Always pretty good food. Get plenty for your money. Good value. Good service
A good arab store, specially for those that are looking for halal beef and lamp, you can find lebanese products especially bread. The guy called nabil is an expert in beef stuff and speaks arabic for those needed to use their own terms for beefs. The location is very good and there is lot of space for parking lot. Also they opened the restaurant inside the market they have good sandwiches.
I didn’t find the star lesser than this.My experience was just disaster: I ordered Haleem from this restaurant and some sweets. I came home heated little bit and started eating then what I found is really miserable. They said it’s haleem but it’s not, it has daal curry with goat soup and mutton pieces.
This is my second time coming here. When I first came here I fell in love with this place but now the foods taste has gotten worse. The Lahori fish whole was really good the last time I came here but when I tried it again, it was horrible. They didnt scale it completely and the fish has little bone needles in it. The hamburgers didnt taste too great but the Biryani was decent. The Nan bread used to be made really good. It would come out red and they put oil over it which tastes amazing but now they dont do that anymore and it tastes plain. This restaurant used to be so much better in the past. Its way too expensive as well; I dont think Im coming back.
I swung by last month and was very impressed by how the were handling social distancing and safety guidelines due to the pandemic. I would go far to say that they are the most conscientious restaurant I’ve been to in this aspect, with dividers for ordering/pickup and plexiglass sheets completely covering the food stations and checkout counter. The lamb curry was phenomenal, the meat was falling apart and there wasn’t need for too much sauce as the lamb itself provided enough moisture to the already good rice. The vegetables were fresh and contributed well to the overall plate and the baklava was well-priced and very good. The portions were big enough they provided lunch and dinner.
Great experience shopping and ordering food. The portions are absolutely amazing and the food is delicious! I highly recommend! Best one stop shopping market in the city. Affordable too! If you’re visiting Pittsburgh, it’s a must that you stop by Salem’s Market & Grill for lunch, dinner or anytime. My favorite spot in Pittsburgh! Love the crew too!
Just visited for my first time and was very impressed. The menu has a very large selection and everything looked amazing. I had lamb and goat curry, both of which were delicious and incredibly tender. Not to mention, the portions are huge at very reasonable prices. Best bang for your buck around town. The store was also nice and clean with plenty of tables for dining in. The dedicated parking lot is also a nice bonus in the city. Looking forward to my next visit to try more of the menu (traditional shawarma is my next order).
Fries cold…burger not the way I ordered. Being Muslim DEOS NOT guarantee you’ll get good service. With THAT being said, EVERYONE should expect good service. 1 star was because the food LOOKED good.
The food is good but really hot and spicy. If you do not like spicy food, mention it when ordering because the spiciness is in another level.I ordered goat biryani and lamb chops. Lamb chops were great but goat biryani was full of small chunks of bone that makes eating hard and dangerous for teeth. The market is great with a lot of Mediterranean and middle eastern products. Also, it has various meat options such as lamb leg, lamb liver and heart, beef and chicken. The price in market is reasonable but the restaurant is overpriced. Staffs are nice and friendly.
They have choices grilled items, curries and snacks both middle eastern and Indian type. The place is busy and very popular. Should definitely try it out.
Very clean and friendly staff everybody was so helpful. They had lots of diffrent meat at decent prices.
Fantastic food and friendly service. This is definitely worth the drive in to the city. Will be going back!!
This has to be my favorite place to go for tasty authentic Middle Eastern and Indian food in Pittsburgh. You get a lot of food that is very traditional tasting and value for money. The staff here are very friendly and respectful, taking time to explain things and take your order. The cooks and servers are generous withe portions. There is respect and love for our fellow man and woman here. The food is halal and portions are so big that my family of 4 easily split two meals. The gyro sandwich alone is big with top quality ingredients. We had samosas and also the biryani and chicken curry.Try the desserts and also the various drinks not found locally. This place is a must try if you are in the Strip District. They have their own car park so you can park and shop in the adjacent store or grab take out from the great restaurant next door.Trust me when I say this a great place and vey addictive. We go at least twice a week from the North Hills to stock up. Thank you Salem’s for the great food, atmosphere and friendliness.
Decent cooked food. And pretty limited meat selection but they have actual butchers!
On top of the food tasting bomb AF, clean, fast and friendly environment.Very large portions and reasonable prices. Dont forget to go next door for fresh groceries.
This place food is fantastic... everything taste great .. service is great ... get there before lunch because the lines are crazy ....
You get alot of food! Amazing quality since the meat comes from their meat market. Amazing burgers, altough you will have to wait for them. Buffet is the best option!
Salems recently catered our wedding and it was superb! The food was excellent and their staff was amazing. Our guests are still raving about the food days later. Wish I could give more than five stars. Thank you Salems!!
Good selection fresh meat and produce.
Salem’s is one of my favorite local gems. Everything I’ve had here is great. The staff is awesome as well. I brought my parents one time who love trying new food, but get a little overwhelmed with picking what to get. The team provided them great recommendations that they ended up loving! My favorites are the meat Shawarma and filet mignon meal. They have a butcher on site, so all of their meat is incredibly fresh and delicious. Pro tip: get the naan to go with your dips! Its awesome.
Everything here is spot on and enormous. If you leave here hungry, you did something wrong. Super fresh grill food, mouth watering garlic sauce, and satisfying naan make Salems a middle eastern staple. Ive even had their cheesesteak and bacon cheese burger - solid weekday lunch spot.
I wasnt very hungry when I initially got the food. I was expecting to just eat half of what I got especially since the proportions are so large. Oh man when I opened up the foil I was hit by the most incredible smell. It got me so excited. And then the first bite was a million times better than I had anticipated. I would not have been able to keep myself from finishing my food. I was doing the little happy dance the whole time I was eating. Every single bite was just fantastic.
Love the verity of the Middle Eastern goods and their restaurant next door has an amazing food thats made home style and always make your mouth water.Looks yummy and tastes even better.. ☺️
Great restaurant for Middle Eastern and Asian food. Almost authentic taste and quality. Love their famous meat Gyro. However, would love to see better service, and clean restrooms.
Service was great, staff was polite and resourceful. Even sold us the marinade rub they use on their lamb chops and ribeye steaks. Love shopping at their market.
New favorite: Tandoori grilled chicken thighs & jumbo shrimp. A little more expensive than other menu items, but off the charts delicious & not a bad choice for healthy eating. Easy online ordering & a special pick-up line keeps you out of those occasional long lines that build up sometimes.
Amazing food and service the chili chicken was so flavorful and the portions where huge would give a higher rating if I could
5/5 STARS!! THIS PLACE IS GREAT, I HAVE BEEN COMING HERE FOR THE PAST 4+ YEARS AND I STILL LOVE IT!
Best goat biriyani we had in the states. The meat was cooked through, tender and juicy. Also, you can adjust the spice level to your test bud! Definitely will visit again!
Enjoyed the Lamb Desi Shawarma meal and outdoor seating. Looking forward to leftovers
Ive been going to Salems at least once a week for the past two years. They are ALWAYS on point and the food never ceases to be incredible. It doesnt matter what you get there, you will be impressed. They also might just have the best fries in the Strip (I get a side of garlic sauce with mine). 10/10 from me, every time.
I doubt theres anything better in Pittsburgh.Their beef steak was HEAVENLY!!!Locals know how good this place is, visitors absolutely have to try it!
My satisfaction regarding the customer service is truly 100% from friendly greetings to cashing out. I havent spoke about the food. The amount of food they give compared to price makes you feel like a VIP. The quality of the food is simply amazing. The flavors in the food let you know someone really cares what they are serving you. Im excited that this business is in Pittsburgh
Uncommon to Pittsburgh. One of the last original ethnic markets left. I was filled with peace and an overwhelming sense of calm from seeing this deli filled with community and kindness on every face. Amazing traditional foods made fresh on the grill or quick meals hot and already prepared.
Salem Market is such a unique place. The food is very good, the customers are diverse, the portions are huge. I usually order online for takeout which is very efficient.
I could have sworn Ive already positively remarked on Salems, but I love it! Great portions, great food, great prices, great atmosphere! You get a sense the employees enjoy friendships with one another and they care about themselves and their lives, this is a good sign for any business. The outdoor seating is great, and affords easy walking to other locations in the strip.
Updated review in 2021:The standard meals have increased from $10 to $15 within 4 years. However the food has remained the best. If you are seeing something affordable, get a gyro or fish sandwich which are less than $10. They are very filling and very tasty. If you can afford the $15 meal then get the lamb meal, its so good! Finally, their veggie samosas are the best. Do not order anything without samosas!Review posted in 2017:Their meals are affordable at $8 to $10, and you get tons of food for a meal. The lamb/goat curry is very good. Their veggie samosa is the best food on earth, I cannot get enough of it.
Food is good and yummy. A must try when you are in Pittsburgh. Personally my favorite is Goat Biryani.
I went here on a Saturday afternoon. I had my pick 4 year old with me. They did not have nuggets or chicken straps which is on the menu. So I got the Wing Dings and asked for them to be well done. For myself I asked for Vegetable Biryani. They offered to make it fresh since the prepaid had chicken in it. Ok cool. The Biryani wasnt bad. But the chicken wings were disgustingly huge and not to slightest of well done. They were not good. I ended up throwing them away.
The portions were well worth the money and the food was AMAZING!
Fantastic food, great prices and friendly service!!
Food looked great. I only had drinks
Food is fresh and delicious. I always come here at least 4 times a week. Definitely recommend for all.
I love this shop so much! Their shawarma wraps are great
Love Salems! Great meals, fantastic fresh halal meats, groceries and even sweets.
No one in line at the meat counter and they make you wait 10 minutes. This place really doesnt care about their customers and you can get everything they have at other places any way. Dont waste your time.
That was great 👌 Thank you so much.
MAKE SURE YOU USE THEIR WEBSITE TO ORDER, NOT ANY OTHER SERVICE.Tons of delicious food for a great price. I come here every week for a meal.
Great grocery store. Many product I cant find elsewhere.
Nice food somewhat on pricey side for portions
Chili chicken and Tikka masala, thats all you need to know. The spinach paneer is amazing also. They used to have an amazing deal on fresh grilled halal steaks, but the prices went up significantly. Still 5 stars imo, great lunch place and solid meat market.
My wife and I have been faithfully eating here as long as we have lived in Pittsburgh. Favorite meal Everytime.
Hot food is excellent and the grocery side has been remodeled and looks great. Huge selection fair prices
This place is amazing. Right on penn. Lots of street parking or lock a bike up outside.Huge buffet to choose from + large portions. Ate half of the container full of food he gave me and was easily full.Friend ordered the lamb and chicken grilled meats in pictures below. $7 each plate. Can’t be beaten for tasty food and portions “outta control!” Try them!
This place is the best for kebab, biryani, goat, chicken and Pretty much everything you want to eat Indian or middle easter style. They serve halal meat. They have a nice selection in there grocery section. They have really yummy lamb curry. The prices are reasonable as well. $10 can get you a lot more than you can eat. I always visit them whenever I go to Pittsburgh. There food is always the best. They have Indian, middle eastern and other variety in there grocery section. They sell goat, lamb, chicken, beef and it’s all halal. Awesome place.
They had fresh halal meats for our cookout.
Best Ive ever eaten. Large portions of food.
