I absolutely love Merantes! I have been going there for 3+ years and have always felt welcomed. They dont gouge students for fresh produce and the homemade, ready-made food is delicious! Whenever I am in Oakland I always make a point to stop by.

Tiny little store locally owned. The employees are friendly and answered any and all questions. They sell authentic imported Italian foods and locally grown produce at way lower prices than grocery stores and better quality.

Oakland can be a pretty bad food desert at times, but thankfully we have this wonderful establishment to keep us hooked up with fresh vegetables and high-quality import olives. You can count on varying and interesting selections of fresh fruit and veg alongside the normal root-veg staples

I dont visit Merantes enough. Its just a few blocks away and they have a great selection of produce and specialty foods. Ill run over here if I dont feel like driving to a big grocery store, but should really try to visit more often. The people are always friendly and I enjoy supporting a local business!

Love visiting this neighborhood Italian Market. The produce is always fresh and I love not going far from home to find the Torrone. Very fair in pricing and the staff is lovely.

Highly recommend. Small but packed with no shortage of delectables. Frozen ravioli is my go to every time, and a side of meatballs to go with it is a requirement- frozen or in sauce. Staff is super friendly and happy to help. I make a special trip every time I am near by.

I have worked in Oakland for over 10 years now and always heard rumors about this great Italian corner market. Today was the first time I was able to visit. My gorgeous wife and I were impressed with the variety, kindness, and excellent home cooked food that we found there! Will definitely come back - much more often than ever 10 years!!

The Cannoli reminded me of the ones I got at LA Belle Ferraris in Little Italy, Lower Manhattan NYC. Not over top sugary... fabulous w a good cup a jo!And beautiful wax Begonia Baskets... reasonably priced. Wish I would have had more time to explore. Ill be back!

Cant say enough good things about this place. While it is certainly cramped inside, it is only to fit as much delicious, reasonably priced food as is possible: the best fruits and vegetables in Oakland, a wide range of Italian imports, and great prepared foods. Plus its independently owned, so you can feel good about spending your money here.

Best kept secret in Pittsburgh. Authentic Italian ingredients. I dont eat lunch often, but stop by when Im in Oakland.

Been coming here for over 20 years and they are soon to celebrate 40 years in business! The people are so nice, the fresh produce and prices are the best around and they always have good quality stock. Excellent import goods, too. The deli is fantastic! You can get a giant hoagie on an entire huge loaf of Italian bread for about $10. Easy feeds two hungry guys. So at $5/each, its THE best lunch in Oakland, although theres no way thats all youre leaving with. Late spring, look for great deals on fresh herbs and beautiful herb gardens they put together in one big pot for you to take away. FANTASTIC!!! A true institution in South Oakland. Do yourself and your soul a favor and go pay them a visit. It will not be your last!

This place is awesome!! They have Boars Head lunch meats and cheeses at unbelievable prices. Everything you need on a weekly basis (lunch meat, bread, milk, eggs, produce, etc.) Is very reasonably priced. Their produce is all local and they have a good selection. Some things are pretty expensive, but you are definitely getting what you pay for with specialty items. They have a fantastic selection of cheeses and they are all great. They also have really good deserts. Its got the mom-and-pop charm as soon as you walk in the door. The whole family is very nice and helpful, to the point where they will give suggestions on how to prepare different foods and will literally walk you through the whole process of how to prepare anything.

This is my around the corner stop for anything from a cup of coffee, to quality Boars Head meats and cheeses, to authentic Italian desserts. Authentic pastas and sauces both imported and local. These amazing people will send you home smiling with some fantastic treats if you ask them about the cooler by the register. Dont miss out on any of the flowers or fresh produce either! Call me a regular, cant recommend this place enough to Oakland students and residents or anyone in the neighborhood!

Nice for the basics and some more interesting Italian foods in a small centrally located place. Love their selection of affordable herb plants in the summer. Workers there could be a little nicer, but no major complaints.

Merantes isnt just a store, it has a heart and treats everyone like family. Always has a nice fresh produce selection, awesome deli products at a bit less $ than many other grocers, and the fresh sandwiches are deliciousss... dont pass on the sweet AND hot peppers! If youre looking for something to snack on or even to cook but need some input, chat it up with the ladies there. You will not be disappointed.

Great Italian grocer. For a small site they have a huge selection. There produce deals are almost unbeatable and produce is extremely fresh. There premade food is very good and they have an excellent deli. Also, they have great frozen dessert treats.

Ever since I first ate here over a decade ago in college I have been coming back regularly! It was amazing the first time and is always amazing every single time I visit! The family that operates the groceria are very friendly!! I highly recommend this place for lunch but they have much more to offer aswell!!

I lived in the building behind this place two years ago. I have since moved to Chicago, but this is the one place In Oakland/Pittsburgh that I have missed.They always have a large selection of fresh vegetables and fruit, pasta salads, sauces, frozen treats, etc. And the deli is always fresh as well. Get one of their sandwiches. Theyre awesome.They even sell flowers during the summer. Parking can be difficult sometimes, but its totally worth the hassle. Not to mention the staff/family who owns this place are always incredibly nice, helpful, and friendly.Zero complaints!

Its a very small place, but has a deli and a lot of Italian and local products. I prefer to come here as opposed to IGA or other places to get groceries in Oakland since their products are a little more fresh.Though since the place is fairly small, it has limited options.

First and foremost, I like this place. They have a nice variety of Italian products and they have been very nice to me in the past. Today however (3/02/2017), something weird happened. They close at 5pm, I was there at 4:30pm because I wanted to buy some sweets and some of the curated meats they have. The deli guy said he had already closed the deli. He said they close the deli at 4:30pm. He said he had sanitized his hands and cleaned the slicer machine for the day and he would not sell any curated meat to me for this reason. I think this is pretty ridiculous. It was a full 30 minutes before closing and I had left my work early specifically to go and buy from Merante but even though I got there in time he wouldnt sell to me. I think this is bad customer service. 4:30 pm is not late, especially if people want to make business. And sanitized hands shouldnt be a problem if you want to sell your products to a customer, nor should be a slicer machine. If anything, after selling to me he would have still had an entire 25 minutes to sanitize or clean the machine.I plan to come back to Merante. I live at walking distance. But I hope they improve their customer service, specifically at the deli station. They missed my money this afternoon. I hope they realize they can lose a lot more business if they dont try to accommodate their customers.

Very rude people I go there almost everyday to buy a sandwich or figs . I told the lady there one day to smile and she flipped out on me . When I tell them if they could cut my sandwich in fours they give a attitude or ask if they can wash a fruit for me they say no or give me a attitude . They need to know how to run a business and be a little nicer to their customers . I’ll make sure I never go back there again

Where else will you get fresh produce and homemade sausage in Oakland?

Merantes is the place to go. Julie, the owner, is super sweet and always quick to help of you have any questions about her food or how to cook/use it. Their pre-made sandwiches from the deli are top notch (and huge), and their selection of cheeses, meats, and pastas is great as well. But where Merantes really shines is in their constantly changing (and consistently cheap) produce. Check here (and ask Julie) for the freshest, most in season fruits and vegetables youll find in all of Oakland (outside of the occasional overpriced farmers market). Theyre regularly on sale, and frequently from local farms. They also regularly receive shipments of goods (including produce) from Italy. Go often and check out whats new. I shop here at least once a week!
