Sweet coffee shop right down town! Great menu, fair price, unique setting. Only negative if you had to name one is the location. If youre strolling through town its awesome but if driving through parking can be an issue. However, the Starbucks drive-thru line is way worse and there you gotta sell your soul anyway. Big Iron is way worth the stop!
TLDR: The barista was slow, chatting with her boyfriend, asked me to wait, then skipped me in line and took orders from someone who arrived after me. I left without ordering anything. This is not a review of their menu, just the general lack of service.COMPLETE STORY:I was vacationing in Steamboat Springs the week of June 5th, 2021. When I arrived there was no one in line, and the barista was introducing her boyfriend to a server from the restaurant next-door.She mentioned she was working on a big order and said she would be right with me in a moment. She took a few minutes to finish one single drink for the server from next door, then said she had another big order, finished preparing a second drink, put it in a drink carrier and left it on the counter. She then went to the cash register and started taking orders from someone who clearly arrived after me and was BEHIND me in line.I left without buying anything. The owner replied to my original review and explained that the layout of the store had changed recently and the staff might have been confused about who was next in line. This reply has since been removed, and Ive updated my review appropriately.Unfortunately, had the layout been the only issue I would have rated higher, but in my humble opinion the barista was slow, distracted with her personal life and clearly not paying attention to her customers. She was the only one there - I can only hope that they were just understaffed and my experience was not the norm.Either way I would not recommend stopping in here for a quick coffee, since that was my goal, and I was not successful. The atmosphere in the café is dark, quiet and very calm - it appears to be a good place to sit and work off a laptop if you can find a chair and dont mind the slow service. There are extremely few seats and most of the floorspace appears to be intended for standing. Thanks for reading! Best of luck!
Stopped off for beans when visiting town and grabbed an iced decaf americano, which was very smooth. Lighter roast seems to be the jam here. If you hit this place in the afternoon you can find a seat outside in the shade.
Very impressive operation and great fast service. They had a line over 10 deep and just kept cranking through with a smile and nice communication between the coworkers too. Grabbed a drip and oat milk cortado to go. loved the whole vibe and really good coffee -cortado was impressive, even served in an itty bitty to go cup and perfect temp.
Excellent coffee! I like to try all the coffee places around when I visit somewhere but for the rest of my trip Ill be coming here. I had the cinnamon bun latte and it was perfect!
The coffee here is just ok. I had a mocha and my guest had a vanilla latte. The coffee has a sour taste. We thought it might be the milk, but the two coffees were made with different milks. I had whole milk and she had fat reduced milk. I think that the sour taste comes from the roast of the beans. This was my second visit and the coffee tasted the same as on my first visit. The baristas are very friendly. The shop is very comfortable with nice seating both inside and out.Overall the place is just Ok. I will be going somewhere else next time.
The nitro cold brew was outstanding. I went back the next morning for a cup of drip and it was great. Super friendly staff and really excellent coffee.
Stephanie was an amazing barista. Real patient and made sure everything f was great. Definitely go to big iron
Shannon ground the beans to buttery perfection. Ooh la la
Delicious coffee in a comfortable, modern ambiance. Great spot.
This is mostly for my order of Bust a Coconut Green Tea experience. We came in on a Friday morning to grab tea and coffee and saw that there was only one worker. There was already a group of college girls (6 of them) that was ordering, then we came in (3 of us) then 6-7 more people came in (15 of us, line was out the door due to social distancing). It seems like this place is popular enough and didnt quite understand why they didnt have at least two workers (theres enough room in the coffee area for distanced working on drinks + someone taking orders at the register). I felt bad for the solo staff doing all the ordering and drink making on her own (there was a few times order was wrong and then she had to fix those orders, etc.) Our coffee run ended up being 45 minutes.I ordered a medium Bust a Coconut Green Tea but it was a lot smaller than what I expected, like a 12oz for $2.25. The green tea profile was really light (too light for my preference), but great coconut complements. Love the aesthetics of the coffee house though!
Seems the barista was having a bad day.. or she is just always extremely rude, but as it was our first time.. it will definitely be our last.
Pleasant coffee joint. Do visit
Cappuccino was amazing! Took it twice at this place during our weekend. Very nice and friendly staff. Definitely will be back next time
Was a great place with awesome drink choices.
Everyone working was very nice and the drip coffee was good. They were out of chai but its probably difficult in the mountains to stock properly. I only came in to take a timed exam and the internet went out and I lost more than 10 minutes on it which gave me crazy anxiety, seems like a frequent problem there so thats important to know. But the staff were doing their best and I appreciated that.
Best breakfast burrito ever
If you are looking for the best coffee in Steamboat Springs, this is the place. We come to Big Iron Coffee every Sunday to do the crossword at the counter and have our lattes and a bagel. Its really one of the highlights of my week and I always look forward to the time Ill spend here because everyone is so kind and friendly to us. They always remember our coffee order and make us feel, as locals, like its worth coming in. Big Iron also has a consistency in the quality of their products that is otherwise hard to find in Steamboat. You can count on their lattes to always be well-made and for your barista to know coffee. Were so glad youre here, Big Iron!
This is the BEST coffee in Steamboat. hands down. No question. So thankful to have found them!!
Absolutely love this place!! Visiting from Aussie, weve found it hard to find espresso coffee and good espresso coffee! But we sure found it here! Great coffee, friendly service and awesome atmosphere ☕️.
We visited Big Iron several times in the last few days and had great coffee and great service every time. Will definitely stop in on our next visit to Steamboat!
There was a ranger with a big iron on his hip.
Great spot for GREAT coffee! Employees and particularly the owner are all extremely friendly!
1/2 inch coffee, the rest foam and flavorless. The wait was very long and the cost was $8. Skip it and head another shop :(
Good coffee, and fast service.
Super nice staff. Very friendly atmosphere. Id say its a must if you like coffee shops.
Coming from Melbourne, Australia, where we are very particular about coffee, I enjoy trying out coffee shops in other places. It can be a challenge finding good coffee in America, although things have improved significantly in the last several years.Im happy to say Iron Mountain make good coffee. The service was friendly, and quick. Good cafe latte. The only real criticism (and it is common to most places Ive tried in America) is that they dont offer soy milk. Almond or Coconut is common, but very few seem to have a soy option. Which strikes me as a bit odd, given that soy milk has the least impact on the flavour of a cafe latte or capuccino. Lucky I dont mind real milk.
That was the best breakfast burrito Ive ever had that wasnt a breakfast grill/cafe.
Had a cappuccino and it was good
Service is very slow. To be fair the customers werent helping, but the staff doesnt speed things along or multitask. Coffee was good, but took several minutes, and one of the two blends was empty for a long period with no attempt to make more.
Super rad shop! Great nitro, super big bodied cold brew with a creamy head on top. Had a chocolate sweetness and great mouthfeel. Amped to have a new roaster especially a third wave one in steamboat. Keep crushing y’all ✌️
Relaxed vibe. I have been there the last 2 mornings. They have been consistent and good. Great way to start the day. I wish they opened at 6 or 630.
My coffee and Latte I got was good but was much like Starbucks for being a small coffee shop I would have preferred it to have come in regular coffee mugs not a to-go cup. I will say that the cookies they had were very good soft on the inside crispy on the outside probably the best thing there
Staff is incredibly knowledgeable and know what theyre doing. Coming from someone who roasted coffee for years, you cant fake passion for the craft. Hands down the best coffee in Steamboat, no question.
Raz and I have differing opinions on Big Iron Coffee, but I write the reviews, so that gives me final say. We stopped into the area since we were looking for something specific nearby otherwise we might never have found this little local coffee shop at all. We both had Chai lattes, as we were in the mood for something caffeinated and slightly sweet, but not so much in the mood for coffee itself. There arent a lot of options on the menu at Big Iron, it being an establishment much more deeply focused on the quality of its roast than the variety of additives to hide any imperfections in the coffee base.Since neither of us actually had said coffee, we can only assume from the excessively long line at 10 AM that it really is quality stuff. The Chai is pretty heady stuff with a strong cardamom kick, just like I like, and for those that are on a no-animal-products regimen, Big Iron has both almond and oat milks to replace the usual cow variety. Im from a long line of wheat-beef people, though so I had the whole milk in my hot drink. Raz had his chai oat-latte cold, which isnt an option I see all that often, but it came out well enough. The place had a hidden-gem local-hangout vibe that I found most pleasing, but the staff was also super friendly and helpful to obvious tourists like myself. Definitely a place Id insist on diving down to for a good cup of morning pick-me-up should we find ourselves in Steamboat Springs again anytime in the near future.
Bright update has totally upgraded atmosphere. Try the scones! Friendly, relaxed vibe with great art on the walls. Music is eclectic and sits nicely in the background.
This place would have had a really nice vibe if it had not been for the baristas. They were literally yelling to each other so that the whole coffee shop could hear their conversation of last nights escapades. If you want to have a conversation with each other, fine, just take it down 15 decibels. Really not conducive to a relaxing coffee environment.
Finally a quality coffee spot in Steamboat. Not only is this the best coffee in Steamboat, but probably the best coffee of any mountain town. The place is way cooler than the old coffee shop here since they re did the entire place as well. If you’re one of those strange people that doesn’t drink coffee, their hop lemonade is amazing as well.
Nice staff, excellent coffee, fantastic logo.
Coffee was good but there werent many options for the non-coffee drinkers in our group.
Delicious coffee in a relaxed space with super friendly baristas. Perfect.
Absolutely love this coffee shop. I just wished they were open at 7 so I could go before work. Always bummed to only be able to get your coffee on my days off.
Excellent coffee and the barista certainly knows what they are doing! Definite stop for coffee lovers! Vibe inside is just right too!
You have to go for breakfast there. We loved their humongous cinnamon roll.
Excellent coffee but on our first visit, the barista helping us was more interested in talking to her colleague than making our drinks.
Good coffee and atmosphere. There was a great jazz trio playing on the Sunday morning we visited.
Most interesting place. Very great .Best dirty chai i ever had. Must have white cupcakes !! Best in the boat.
Had a good cortado...barista cared enough to make it over after she didn’t feel her first attempt was right. Good seating inside and a few tables outside. It is below street level which helps make it feel it’s not right next to the traffic.
Great coffee, chia and breakfast burritos
Great location, adequate parking, welcomed warmly, nicely decorated outside & inside, friendly employee, delicious coffee and muffins & stuff, delicious Burundi coffee with plenty of flavored syrups, free refills!, interesting background music, clean & tidy & bright seating area, clean restroom.
The bitter earthy espresso hit my lips, and it was so delicious, I replaced the memeory of a distant lover with its rich and smooth flavor. A healing experience to say the least. The barista was lush and charming, somehow squeezing as much uniqueness out of our mundane interaction as yeuldable, yet never appearing to be trying at all. A beautiful act that reality needs more of. Offsprings “Americana” was playing and it felt like a place I could waste days here.
Ideal downtown location! Mellow place to hang outside with your dog or inside with a book or your kids. Great for group meetings.
Came twice. Delicious cold brew and scones on the first visit. The second visit was a treat with a late that also paired well with a raspberry scone!
Best coffee in steamboat! So glad to have them right around the corner!
Really nice service. Plenty of space to sit and hang out.
Best gluten free muffins Ive ever had. Zucchini is the best!
Nice little shop. Friendly workers. Free wifi.
Great coffee and customer service...a free cup when you buy a bag of beans...sadly most coffee shops stopped this “perk” years ago, thanks Big Iron!
Used to love coming here, this year things changed somewhere. Coffee was meh, barista didnt seem to know what was what. Some items missing from the menu we used to like. Time to find another stopping ground for coffee I guess.
Incredible service, great atmosphere and delicious drinks and coffee.
Hands down best coffee in town. Quality espresso, cool stickers, and warm staff!
Finally a good espresso joint in steamboat!!! So grateful to have you guys in our town!
Was looking for breakfast, and caught it out of the corner of our eye while walking down the main street. Good coffee, decent smoothie.
Very nice cute place with diferent options of breakfast and coffe.
Cozy coffee shop with yummy baked goods and good teas in addition to their nice coffee selection.
Lovely little place and the barista was friendly and gave great suggestions
5 stars for the best mocha in town.
Great coffee or course, friendly staff, breakfast burritos are awesome, and they serve booze, whats not to love.
Nice staff, great cappuccino, weird layout for the line though.
Coffee was delicious and served quickly; however, the staff members did not exactly exude good/happy customer service.
Mediocre
My Americano was so terrible that I ended up dumping out 80% of it. It was so weak! Any other coffee shop in the boat cant make a worse espresso drink than this place.
Staff was not focused on their customers, had to ask twice to get food item that we had paid for, 1st coffee they served was just warm. They did brew a new pot for us
This coffee house has changed hands many times but always has great coffee, great friendly service, and is a cozy place to do work or have a meetup with friends. Buy local!
Great coffee, friendly staff, worth trying the dry hopped sparkling lemonade.
Best coffee in town hands down! Staff is incredibly friendly!
Ohmylord. These peeps can make a coffee. I had a flat white with almond milk, my wife had an Earl Grey tea and both were amazeballs.
Nice staff and great coffee drinks!
Wow! Literally best coffee in town. The Baristas are all so considerate & its the only place with exciting drinks like *adult smoothies* & *esspresso milkshakes* I repeat, *WOW*
Awesome shop. Great coffee
Coffee was good. However food service was terrible
Good stuff. Give it a try!
Great coffee and great service. They serve steaming bean coffee. Stoked.
Cozy little shop serving coffee and pastries
Really solid coffee and espresso
Excellent service and food
Dang good coffee and awesome baristas!
Great coffee, open late, not crowded, not touristy, great service
First coffee shop they did not offer me decaf at same price as brewed coffee. Bummer. Charged the Americana price.
Bowen is the best coffee guy in the business
