Sorry but I would only increase the stars if we happen to go back and actually eat a meal here and they actually have a proper bar running. I guess its an adequate bar for college kids (during college times) but the kitchen was closed except appetizers and the chocolate cake was not the best 6 dollar a slice cake Ive had. The Moscow Mule was ok, but they didnt have much else. The best thing was the bartenders consistency and his fab mustache. Get it, Mr. Cool!
The service was good! Our waitress was very personable and attentive. The Hot Holly was amazing and lives up to its reputation. I do not think they have AC however but a good to go food spot!
I really enjoy supporting local businesses. It will be very difficult to continue that trend with this establishment. My girlfriend and I arrived four hours before closing and the kitchen had already resorted to a limited menu. Appetizers only. We ordered Wings and a salad and a slice of chocolate cake for dessert. The food came from the kitchen across the street. Nothing was made on site. The cake slice was in the same building to our surprise. The wings were average and the salad was subpar. The cake was dry and expensive. The drinks were great but the drink list was extremely limited. I had to go through a list of what they didnt have before something they could make was available. For having a bar, that was very disappointing. The cleanliness of the establishment was suspect. The restrooms were horrible and the smell of urine almost made me turn and leave immediately. No soap, paper towels or any means to dry your hands were available in the restroom. I could not remember seeing hand sanitizer on the premises as well. The bartender was pleasant and had lots of personality. He even had a mustache that would put Magnum PI to shame.I think with all that being said, we will spend our hard earned cash elsewhere.
We were leaving Colonial Williamsburg and decided to stop in. I discovered while trying to order that this is basically an extension of the restaurant across the street as they use the same kitchen/ menu which is disappointing seeing what used to be offered on the menu board. The inside of the restaurant was hotter than the outside and we moved to the outside seating area. There was no music out there since so we sat in silence as we waited a very long time for our food. The food was decent. I would not allow my family to walk into the restrooms due to the conditions both sanitary and electrical. I do not understand how this place is open.
Wow...wow...too bad Kitchen Nightmares is no longer on TV because Gordon would have his next stop right across the street from the picturesque campus of William and Mary. The building looks grungy. I’ve eaten at grungy mom and pop places before with amazing food...this is not one of them. The sticky film covering the surfaces, the historic dusty memorabilia, and the sampling of Bath and Body Works candles burning along the bar should have been a warning sign. I ordered the French Dip which was crafted across the street at Paul’s Deli and whisked across the street through the side door by the garbage cans by our waitress. The French Dip could be thematically renamed the “Colonial Shoe Dip” because the meat on the sandwich was like shoe leather. The Coke tasted almost flat like the carbonation hadn’t been changed or serviced in several years. Do yourself and your stomach a favor...DON’T.
Just went in for drinks. Great service. Our bartender, Wes was attentive and friendly.
Avoid like the plague!!!!!!!The place was dirty and falling apart!!!. No soap dispenser or towel dispenser in the restroom. Plus exposed wires hanging from the ceiling light. Nat or fruit flies all around and inside the restroom. Tables dirty, food on the floor and top it off the booth We sat in had an exposed electrical outlet waist high… SAFETY is not a concern of the owner and staff!!!!! . Went onTuesday around 630. We’re the only ones on the place. Health department should shut this place down!!!
Tasiki Dip and Pita is soooooo good!!!!!...I try and to stop as often as im by there...It was extra hot on patio though...extra fans might help....Didnt disappoint!
Very nice people I enjoy going there after work with my colleagues!!
I came for lunch and had a very disappointing experience here. I have been to College Delly in the past (over a year ago) and it seems to have gone downhill since then. The menu is now the menu from Pauls Deli. The service was a solid C-. The waiter seemed to know very little about the specials and was inattentive. I saw two other customers leave because they sat down and the waiter never came to them. The worst part was the food. I ordered the Chandler sub. There was no bacon on my sandwich and the roast beef was practically inedible. It was 75% fat and gristle. I couldnt even bite through the sandwich because the meat was so gristly. When we went up front to pay we noticed that there were no cooks present, the grills were not even on. It was then that we realized the food was being made across the street at Pauls Deli then being brought over by the waiter. What is the point of this restaurant if its literally just the same poor food as the place across the street? After this experience I will never recommend College Delly and by extension, Pauls Deli. Very disappointing all around.
Many post final exam celebrations were had here. It gets rowdy.
Wonderful lunch. Extensive menu. Welcoming and safe
Every time we visit Williamsburg my wife and I eat here. Its definitely not a fancy place, more like a local hole-in-the-wall kind of place. The food is always great and theres just something about the local flavor that brings us back every time. I always get the pepperoni pizza which is similar to pizza hut but sooo much better, with a nice think butter crust. My wife got one of their daily special burgers with bacon, egg, guac, etc. - even had gluten free buns for those who need it. She said it was amazing and one of the best burgers shes ever had (pictured)
The food we had was not great, not sure if it was because we went early but the pretzels we had were soggy and the sub I had was mostly grease. The only thing redeeming about the place was the service, the guy who served us was good otherwise not worth going to with all the places nearby( across the street).
First impression was a dead cockroach in the womens restsoom, obviously it hadnt been cleaned recently. I ordered Chicken Parmigiana, per Google this is what Chicken parmigiana is supposed to be, or chicken parmesan, is a dish that consists of breaded chicken breast covered in tomato sauce and mozzarella, parmesan, or provolone cheese. I received 4 small pieces of over cooked chicken not breaded in covered in yellow and white cheese. I was told that it was mozzarella and cheddar, also this the Greek version. Maybe you should name it something else.My kids also ordered Chicken, it was overcooked and dry. Fries were luke warm. The Stromboli was great.
We were from out of town and looking for a place to eat. This place had good reviews, so we decided to give it a shotThis place was disgusting. The men’s bathroom smelled like urine and did not have any soap or paper towels. If you accidentally bumped the table we sat at, it rocked back and forth so hard that the drinks kept spilling. We told the waitress, but she didn’t care. Some of our group liked the food that they ordered, but most didn’t.When the bill came, we noticed the prices were different than were listed on the menu we ordered from. When we asked the waitress about it, she said that the menu was from Paul’s Deli across the street. When you ordered the food, it came from Paul’s but you were charged their prices on your bill. She said that the owner had three places in the area and charged different prices even if the food was the same. He set the pricing and his staff was following the instructions given to them by the owner. When I asked for contact information for the owner, the waitress said he was out of the country and wouldn’t return my call. She went and got the “manager” that was there. She made excuses and offered to go and adjust the bill. At that point, I had enough, so we paid the bill and began to leave. The “manager” returned with another “manager”. All that he wanted to do was argue with me. He said that the previous manager offered to adjust the bill. I told him I shouldn’t have to ask for the bill to be adjusted to the prices that were advertised to me when I sat down. After seeing how dirty this place was and the bait and switch on pricing, I think the reviews that I saw were written by the owners friends. I would have given it zero stars if that were an option.
I have been going to the Delly for almost 40 years. Started going there when I attended W&M and was hooked the first time I ate there. To be honest, the building is just okay. It has been remodeled a few times and they added the heated outdoor patio since my early days there. If you are going for great atmosphere and fun, there are better places in the Berg for that. But if you want a hot deli sandwich, this is the place to go. The hot Holly is my personal favorite. I have had one of those every few years over the past few decades and it is still a great sandwich. The secret to their sandwiches is that they make their bread and it is perfect - enough to hold everything together (most of the time) but not enough to get in the way of what is inside.I have read some not so positive reviews about the College Delly and their staff. I have never had an issue with the food or service or the attitude there. The staff has always been courteous and professional. I love the place and make sure to stop by there whenever I am within about 30 miles of Williamsburg.
Slow service. Dirty. Overwhelming odor of bleach. Used to be a favorite stop. Today will be our last visit
The food was pretty good and the service was good as well. My only two concerns were both regarding sanitation. When our food was placed on the counter to be delivered to us, a child was standing on the stool at the counter hovering over the food, with a server standing right there. Additionally, there was an ant crawling on the table and another on the wall.
Food was dry and gross and the bartender didn’t know what a margarita was. How are you a bartender in you late 20s and not know how to make a simple margarita?! We left before it got too packed with college kids because I guess it turns into the kind of scene on Friday nights which is fine but seriously if you turn into a real bar at the end of the night, your bartenders should definitely know how to make the most basics of drinks
Made a visit here May 2018, great meal. Had a burger and house fries. Well cooked and service was standard. We were staying inside park so this restaurant is a bargain and convenient to walk to. Would definitely recommend. Can be very crowded during peak times, using Google maps for for off peak is recommended.
The gyro was so yummy!!!!
Big portions of avg, meh, food. Place looked run down and in need of some new furnishings. Waitress was avg nothing special. They were all pleasant in the place so that was good but for what I paid i expected the food to be a bit better. Not someplace I would go back to anytime soon.
Always great food! Been going for 40 years.
Food was OK but not memorable. On the plus side the servings were on the large side.
Been going here for 6 plus years now. Italian sub beats the rest around the block hands down. Great beer selection usually always busy
Stopped in late at night on the way back to work. The front staff AND kitchen staff were friendly and helpful. My hot sub was so good, I ordered one to go for my lunch the next day.
Great place...love the W&M atmosphere....good menu....
Great service and prices. Gets a little busy over the weekends and 8n the evenings, but the service is pretty spot on to make sure youre taken care of. The food is average, but still fresh tasting and delicious.
Great variety of foods. Sandwiches are always consistently delicious. The staff was engaging and attentive. Loved the College Delly as a W&M student in the 80s and find it to still be a treat in 2018 as we pick-up and drop-off another generation at W&M.
A lot of variety in the menu. Was with a vegetarian and there were plenty of choices for her. Fast and attentive service. Good portion sizes -- brought home leftovers. Nice craft beer selection. Ive been here a few times and its consistently good.
I spent a Sunday night there and really enjoyed it. Thanks to my bar tender Rhiannon. Made me feel right at home.
Perfect college deli atmosphere, a little scuzzy, a little worn out, some fraying around the edges, but intact and ready to rock. My reuben sandwich was very good (I eat a lot of reubens), could have used more dressing but overall very good, nice toasty bread, not too buttery. My college student daughter had the white pizza, which she said was very good, although all that cheese made it a little greasy (which is not a terrible thing). Huge menu, nice waitstaff, clean bathroom. Totally satisfying!
Realtively standard bar food but good. Typically crowded and loud. Only family friendly around lunch time.
Were from philly and we always try and eat here when we come down. Its a nice little gem we happened upon while looking for a place to eat. The nachos are amazing!
Best flaming cheese and $1 bud lights in a 4 mile radius
This place is a William & Mary institution. Theyve had the courage not to change too much. Hot Holly is near perfection when it comes to a sandwich. Friendly and helpful servers as well.
Great time with a group of friends friends. The bartenders were awesome. Will definitely go back
Food is great, beer is cold. Waitress there named Lauren I think, was very professional with an excellent attitude and provided great service. If you are new to the place ask for her and give her the A+ tip she deserves.
Get the Hot New York. Went here last week for the first time in 38 years. Just like I remember - tho they have expanded. And, you used to stand in line and now it is table service. So, maybe not so much as I remember.
1.5 stars really. I dont dislike it but I dont like it. There are also no/very limited options. If it were free it would be fine. I suffer regularly. If you dont have to, dont.
Great lunch spot. Love the gyro, greek salad, and onion rings. Cant go wrong with any of the sandwiches. Reasonable prices. A go-to for the college and the business crowds.
Fair prices, outdoor covered seating. The college delly has been a Williamsburg staple for decades, having changed hands several times but not much else. Happy hour specials, brunch menu, and a good variety of beer especially given that they dont have a wall of taps. The food is usually exactly what you need on a night out drinking. The crowds vary even throughout the day. Locals at lunch to regulars for after work drinks to the 7/8pm college crowd coming in for happy hour. The place has two bars, one inside one outside, waited tables and walk up ordering. This means on a fully staffed night everyone gets helped pretty quick even if its busy. On the other hand if the front of house is a few folks short then you may end up waiting as they hustle to cover all service areas. That being said Ive had one or two bad experiences out of a couple hundred visits and the problems got resolved when they came up. This is my go to place for a meatball sub with pepperoni and onions, and an Irish trashcan followed by a bunch of beers that fit my shoestring budget.
$6 Mimosa pitchers offer Sunday brunch. Need I say more??
Always a nice night out on Tuesdays. The staff is very pleasant. Thanks guys and gals :)
Good Greek food at a reasonable price. Good service. Takeaway is available. Located across from William and Mary and close enough to walk from Merchants Square.
Great college watering hole. Neat happy hour deals, lively patio and good pizza. No frills but definitely cozy.
Good food, cozy atmosphere, great service!
Cheap drinks and decent food
College Delly had an okay selection of drinks, I was willing to settle on a Bold Rock because thats the only thing that seemed good to me.What made my experience just terrible, is my bartender. Youd think bartenders would be in a decent mood to their tipper. My bartender (Rhi) was absolutely horrific. Attitude and all, rudely telling me and my friends where we couldnt stand because it was in her way, instead of nicely asking us to reposition ourselves so she could effectively work.
Had the Greek dolmades and the Deluxe Sausage Stromboli it was huge. Good food, great service. Enjoyed the meal and atmosphere.
Laid back, good food, cold beer, great service
Local place with a nice view of the street traffic. Good sandwiches. The loaded fries with ranch will go quickly!
If Philadelphia knew how good their Philly Cheese Steak Wrap was they would sue them! Wow, unbelievable!
We sat on the bar patio on a nice spring Saturday and made our own bloody Marys at their DIY bloody Mary station. The booths werent super comfortable and there was some sort of obstruction on the floor that people kept tripping over. We werent there to eat, so I cant comment on the food. It was right across the street from William & Mary where we were visiting our daughter. There servers were nice and attentive. It was reasonably priced and I can see this being a fave hangout spot for college kids on a budget. I would probably go back. Im sure that well have plenty of chances. Next time Ill check it the food.
Took over an hour before food was served, never received app. Little not no interaction with staff. Maybe an off day, but will not be returning.
Back in ye olden times, I had hair and the only gut I had was the one that told me to do really stupid things. I only went to the College Delly one time when I was an undergrad but it was a damn memorable night. I can’t get into the dirty details but College’s very reasonably priced Everyman champagne sure sent my young ass into outer space. And my date liked it a lot too. I never ate there, though. I returned to the burg recently and had some lunch there. I did not order any champagne. But the grub was tasty and very reasonably priced (especially compared to the gdamn DC area). The drinks were cheap, too! One of my big regrets was that I hardly went out at all in college. By if I could rent a time machine (you never want to buy one - the fashionable styles change all the time), you can bet my obnoxious ass would be getting kicked out of College’s all the time. This last time, I walked out on my own accord, a belly full of good food and a heart full of nostalgia. Party on, College Delly.
Wow, one of the best subs Ive ever had! The word status here is friendly and cordial. Could not ask for more; this is a great place.
Great staff & food. Best fries, sandwiches & drinks. You will never go away hungry.
Super fun place with a good selection of food. Fun waitresses especially Lauren! I recommend Taco Tuesday for a good deal on tacos and on Modelos or margaritas. What a blast!
First timer. Had the pepperoni stromboli. It was awesome! Service was great and the food came quick, even on a Saturday night.
Ive been eating here since I was about 6 years old. 3 decades later I still stop by and get a hot holly whenever it in town. I drove from New York for one day just to get a sub, sounds crazy but thats just how much I love this place. The food is amazing the staff is great and lets not forget about those crazy college kids who have kept this place going for so long.
The service was great. I was looking for more Greek fare on the menu but mostly saw American food. I just had the chicken quesadilla; it was a good size, definitely filling. I will be back.
Pizza was awesome. Great atmosphere.
If you go at lunch and there’s no table service turn around and go elsewhere! I just walked out because the cook taking orders wanted to give me a hard time because I asked where to get a drink...food may be great, but it’s not worth the disrespect.
Great food and service. A hidden gem that we never miss when we visit Williamsburg.
Great, local bar and grill, lots of personality and lots of good food, especially their nachos!
Awesome. We were there Wednesday evening. Nick took care of us. He was great. We will definitely be back.
My wife and and I stopped here while visiting Williamsburg for our anniversary. We wanted to eat dinner somewhere that had a nice patio and wasnt a chain restaurant. The patio was awesome and the bartender and servers were nice. I got a sub and my wife got a crab cake sandwich, both were delicious. The music and atmosphere was good but we did go after school had let out so I can see that place getting slammed with the college across the street. They also had awesome $1 beer drink specials, would love to come back if back in the area.
Tasty af meatball sub. Definitely a favorite.
Overall a solid place but the young blonde female bartender is incredibly rude. She checked my ID for a drink order and then approached me at my table 5 minutes later demanding my ID again and proceeded to quiz me on the details. When I acted annoyed this was happening she told me to leave if I was going to continue showing attitude!
Awesome appetizers and bar. Great menu!
Always a fun time and the breads are made fresh daily,
Liked the food but it took forever
Good food and pretty cool atmosphere
Food is always good. Cold beer. And friendly staff. Doesnt get any better than this!
Wasnt what it use to be. Service was slow and food lacked for the price.
Tasty food, great service, relaxing atmosphere. I would definitely visit again!
This place needs a good cleaning! And then they need to get people who can cook!
Not family friendly. The food was terrible and the place was filled with college kids. Disappointing experience for a late night dinner after being at an amusement park all day.
So glad they were open on CHRISTMAS day. Memories of when I was a student. But I forgeot how big the sandwiches are. Good food, fast, friendly.
If you would like to get an attitude by the waitress and the cook every time you go there, then this is the place to go! I think I can count in one hand the times they have been nice to me. Today I ordered loaded fries and they didnt give the the ranch so I just asked for it...the waitress gave me an attitude and asked me to show her the box insinuating I was lying and the cook took his time to decide if he wanted to give me the ranch or not. When he finished he kept staring at me like if he wanted to curse me out because I asked for ranch...so good luck!
Typical Bar food and drinks. They have a good staff, food is fine, drinks are good. Super close to the college.
Great atmosphere. Not too busy but definitely a good place
Geart food and great prices
Subs are amazing. Good kids menu too.
Cute local college bar in the evening. The prices for drinks are reasonable and the drink selection is vast. Plenty of table seating and bar seating. The cost of a pint of Tavern Ale was $4.
Good food and a great campus experience with a friendly staff, plus decent prices.
Love this place. Convinenent to the college with fantastic food and drinks at reasonable prices.
Huge portions for a great price. Great deals on alcohol too, but it is in the college area.
Great food and good atmosphere
Great diverse menu and great food service and prices are reasonable.
This place tries and tries, but just cant live up to the marginal standards set my its neighbors (Leafe & Pauls). The food is absolutely dreadful and the bar is tiny. The people are nice though.
Food was pretty good, my friend and I arrived a few minutes after 9, and stood around until a younger blond waitress asked us at cash register what we wanted and we wanted the 4$ magritas and she said the deal ended 5 minutes ago. Then said the same thing when we wanted tacos, she was not rude just very un-friendly. I ended up getting the other guy working (Carlos I think) to get us a deal on some tacos and he was super accommodating and helpful. Ill be back as long as I dont have to deal with the girl.
