Quaint little coffee shop chain located in squirrel hill! Nestled along a strip near a book store, library, and plenty of shops and places to eat. Make sure you try the espresso, or an iced coffee. Their danishes are also very good. Commonplace Coffee is go-to place to meet friends. Staff and patrons are friendly, and welcoming. Their outdoor seating area is also a plus!
Best Latte Ive Eeevvveerrrrr had. I went to the strip district and got different fancy coffees Ive traveled far and wide...this coffee sent a tingling feeling down my spine and I was suddenly transported into a realm of relaxation and comfort. I got it in the early shift by a girl named Katie whether its how she made it or the coffee itself 🤯 blown away
Good experience, atmosphere is very welcoming and cozy. Love the industrial theme implied in the furniture. Quality roast, fresh beans. The cold brew was very well executed. Strongly recommend this shop for its reasonable prices, well-trained staff, and great coffee.
The coffee was so strong it was one of the best coffees I have every had. The blue berry muffins was on the money . I give this place 10 stars⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
One of my favorite places to get a decaf Americano and sketch and paint. The staff was very open to discussing hanging paintings in the shop. Staff was very easy to communicate with and very responsive to discussing hanging artwork. A great coffee shop with a great atmosphere and wonderful staff.
Nice coffee shop! Would definitely go back.
Compared to the other locations Ive been too their options are very limited. No pour overs(v60/chemex) only drip coffee, espresso and teas. Very disappointing compared to their other locations. Also the drip coffee wasnt anything special. For reference I make all the aforementioned at home. Perhaps it should be called the commonplace express..
Not impressed at all by this coffee shop. They dont do pour overs which was very disappointing. It is kind of junky inside, just look up when you sit down, pretty dirty. I will not be back to this location.
Delicious espresso and I’m picky! Food isn’t delish but the coffee keeps me coming!
The coffee itself was good. I think the latte should have been stronger, and the milk hotter.Beans are nice. pretty fresh. The ones in the shelves were about a week old, at the average Cafe/roastery price? taste wise, it was simply good clean espresso. The baristas were nice as well. Thanks commonplace!
Ethiopian coffee I had this morning was outrageously good!
Love this store. Very well thought out process for buying a coffee or beans. Easy and quick!
I love this place. The coffee is strong and smooth, the baked items are on point, and I really really value the amount of shifting theyve done of the space in Squirrel Hill to accommodate COVID precautions
The best coffee and espresso with professional, responsible and stylish baristas.
Great coffee, always get beans to brew at home...soo good!
The honey ginger root turmeric latte is heavenly
Lavender latte was amazing!
Went there on a Friday I think. Looking forward to returning with my relatives. Menu is similar to a restaurant in El Paso I liked.
I could live here. Perfect coffee great atmosphere, I really hope it’s here after the pandemic to return to!
Great place to work remotely while in Squirrel Hill. As any other Commonplace Branch, they have a wide variety of items, from coffee to tasty treats. If you’re in the mood of sitting inside, there’s a small outdoor area where you can hang out and observe the traffic. Because it’s a cool place, sometimes it’s difficult to find a place to seat.
Nice place. Lots of seating with outlets nearby in case you bring a laptop or need to charge a phone while you sip your beverage. The staff was friendly and welcoming, and the prices are quite reasonable.
Always lovely humans and lovely coffee from the greatest of Pittsburgh roasters. Dedicated to the place, and the community, since the day it opened. :)
The people there are very helpful.
My favorite (and most frequented) coffee shop in Pittsburgh. The baristas are all super nice and helpful. The honey and cinnamon lattes are really really good, and the gluten free apple cinnamon or pineapple donuts are moist and delicious! I have also gotten the blueberry muffins and they are really good too! My friends love the cappuccinos here. They have a lot of space for those looking to do work here, but the vibe is definitely not quiet, so you can also come here to enjoy coffee with friends!
I came in at 8:00am and there were plenty of tables and good wifi to start my workday. My 8oz coffee was delicious and cost $1.75, a fraction of the cost at their better-known competitors. And frankly, the environment just felt friendly and warm, and I would have been happy with the experience even if the coffee tasted like dirt. But let me just underscore the fact that it did not. It was excellent.
Great little coffee shop. Its conveniently located near the corner of Forbes and Murray in squirrel hill. Great people working in there. Very upbeat and happy. The coffee is fantastic. I get the espresso, obviously but I usually pick up coffees for other people in the office, also. Its a favorite among the MMODAL staff, which is where I work.
This place is easily the best coffee and espresso in the city of Pittsburgh.the location in squirrel Hill is very relaxing and the employees are fantastic.I highly suggest getting a pour-over coffee because they make them better than anybody in town and their beans are second to none.
Definitely the best quality coffee out of the local neighborhood options. Would like to see more options for pour overs; at minimum they should offer to brew the coffees they are selling. Clearly they have a love for coffee but a customer-centric approach is definitely lacking. Entitled Caucasian millennials may not necessarily be the way to best serve customers of THIS particular neighborhood.
Coffee is really good. Pastries not so much. The dont warm their savory scones before they serve them. They are super dry and do not taste good. If thry added sour cream and small chunks of cheese they could warm them and they would be amazing. There quiche was decent
This is my favorite coffee shop in the area. Great, full range of beans and roasts combined with skillful brewing. They also have interesting flavoring, if youre into that kind of thing. For example, try the lavender-flavored cappuccino, which is just wonderful. On top of that, they have plenty of seating and a nice outdoor patio area.
Good quality beans and well trained baristas. They serve cappuccinos etc at a temperature which is drinkable straight away and doesnt need a cup holder to stop you burning your fingers. Its a coffee shop where many folk prefer to sit down and enjoy their cup, rather than a grab and go place. My own quibble (not a full complaint) is that the layout of the shop can make the queues for ordering and collection a bit awkward if there are more than 4 people in the queue.
Great atmosphere, nice staff, GREAT coffee, definitely my new go to on the way to work. I usually just get my usual, an espresso at the bar, and a coffee to go, never disappoints. This place is a gem.
Entirely unremarkable in both atmosphere and coffee. Good place to go if you dont mind being uncomfortable so long as you can go to a place people say is cool. Dont get me wrong, its not bad, just extremely unimpressive.
Happy to find the great coffee here. Had a delicious Ethiopian pourover and the ambiance is great. Clearly a loyal neighborhood following with many folks greeting each other by name. Great, friendly staff round this out as a solid start to the morning.
I think this place is hip enough you feel cool coming to drink coffee here but not confused. There is a clear sign for where to dispose of trash and dirty dishes which is a major plus. Overall I enjoyed my morning here.
Great neighborhood spot for a tasty beverage. They pour beautiful lattes and have a nice selection of coffee. In warmer weather their outdoor seating is lovely. They also have a cooler with alternatives to coffee.
Nice little spot for a quick drink or for sitting down a while. Espresso drinks are delicious, consistent, and beautifully presented. Good variety of muffins and scones for a nush. Staff seems competent and are definitely very friendly. The tables are a bit wobbly, so just be cautious of putting a full drink near any electronics. ;-)
Very comfy and the staff knows coffee. I dont prefer their straight espresso as its more ideal for milk drinks. If they offered a single origin espresso that would be awesome but Im just one guy haha.
Cozy and modern cafe. Great place to sit outside and sip your favorite drink. The outdoor seating is very limited but nice. Speaking of limited: the 4 star rating is for the small space -- this place is always so packed that it can be difficult to find a place to sit down. If youre not a fan of crowds at your choice of coffeeshops, steer clear during peak hours.
Nice place with good ambience. Super friendly stuff. You can work there or meet people. I took a soy cappuccino which was pretty good. I didnt check the pastries but thet look yummy. Its a nice coffee place in squirrel hill.
Great coffee! If you buy a bag of coffee then you get a free cup of coffee, how great!
One of my favorite Pittsburgh coffee shops, definitely the best in Squirrel Hill, and an indubitable five stars. Ive been coming here consistently since they made their foray into the city and opened this location several years ago, and I drink their product almost every day. Originally based in Indiana, PA, theyve since moved their roasting operations to nearby Homewood. You can expect their coffee to be roasted within the past week or so.Consider trying the cappuccino, pour-over or cold brew, but anything is fair game. Roasts are generally on the lighter side. They make some of their own flavor syrups, as well. Tea selection is smallish but diverse and good for my taste (Im typically here for coffee).Space is often crowded, seating not the comfiest, dont always count on a seat if youre here on a weekend. WiFi isnt great either.Staff is knowledgeable and generally friendly, too.Beans are a bit pricey but cheaper than, say, Intelligentsia, and worth the money. They also offer a free small drip coffee with beans purchase (though you may have to ask).
Great coffee and cool vibe. Only thing is that its usually busy and can be hard to find a seat, at which point I usually go and chill out at the library next door.
I tried latte with apple cake. the girl said they dont have any fork or knife available for cake. Weird! Am I supposed to eat by hand?! Also she gave me single-use cup for coffee, though I sat inside. I think there are much better coffee shops around.I I will never come back
Definitely one of the coolest coffee shops in Pittsburgh. The barristas are so friendly. The location is great. The place is so aesthetic. Great place to study, work, go on a date, meet up with a friend, etc!
Great coffee, they just dont seem to understand double. I ordered a double espresso and got one shot. It happens every single time.Still, best espresso in Pittsburgh.
Very good coffee and a nice place to study or read. The only downside is that I wish it was larger
The beans are roasted just so perfectly. I love the cold brew on any temperature of day but sometimes Ill go wild and get the honey cinnamon latte.
Great 3rd wave shop. Excellent spro served on a Synesso 2 group machine. During my visit they were serving their Tusk blend, the barista’s favorite. I visited twice in two days it was excellent both times.
Great service, in a very modern environment. Usually all the tables are full when I go in, no matter what time of day. Some pricing might be a little high-priced, mostly because the small size coffees are very small. I would recommend this place for those who like their coffee without all the sugar shots and additives.
Delicious coffee, these guys know how its done. Hand crafted flavors are worth a shot too. Good luck finding a seat, its always packed here.
Commonplace serves some of the best coffee in Pittsburgh. The baristas are often overworked, so theyre not the friendliest, but damn do they make good coffee. The pour over selection is awesome, and the flavors for the hand poured coffee are always changing. Their variety is great from week to week, but if youre going only once, then the menu might seem a little small. The latte drinks are also great. They have a set of unique flavors that cost an additional 50 cents, and they are all worthwhile. Soy also costs extra.
Good vibe, friendly staff. Ordered a pour over and the water was tepid at best. Wasnt one of the better cups of coffee that I have had. Will try again though. May have been an off day.
Coffee quality: Certainly better than the mainstream national franchises.Seating: Poor. There is insufficient seating capacity, leading to many guests not being able to sit down and enjoy their drinks. If you do manage to find a seat, you will feel crammed. This cafe is a victim of its own popularity.Environmental: This place is uniquely miserable in the dead of winter. Unlike other venues, the main seating area abuts the entry door, sending massive blasts of cold air each and every single time someone enters or leaves. Dress especially warm.Acoustics: You’ll definitely need headphones if you expect to concentrate. It’s a lively, small, confined space (relative to competitors) with chatter aplenty.
The oat milk latte is literally the best I have ever had.
Best coffee ive had in Pittsburgh. Simple straightforward menu. High quality beans which are also available for retail at affordable prices. Staff is usually very friendly and helpful.
Really great coffee. I moved recently, so Im definitely going to miss this place.
Good coffee. Honey & cinnamon latte was delicious. Cups and lids are biodegradable which is awesome! Barista wasnt the most personable, but i did overhear her mention being up early for school. Must have been a long day. Other than that cant complain
Wonderfully tasty coffee. Always smooth. Never bitter. Servers are always pleasant. Very plain wooden chairs and tables, but the atmosphere is always friendly and comfortable.
The best cappuccino I have ever had. It was a little expensive though; $3 or $4 for a small (approx. 8oz). I was ok with the price because the service was great and the quality of the coffee is amazing and definitely better than all of the other places I have been to!
Simple menu but what they do, they do well. My latte was tasty and had a cute foam design on the top. Small outdoor seating for the nice days.
Visiting from out of town love to try new coffee shops did not feel welcomed & my coffee wad the most bitter coffee Ive ever had. Worth a try.
Commonplace Coffee has an earned reputation for being the hippest coffee shop in Squirrel Hill. If youre already in the neighborhood this is a great place to come for a top notch cup of coffee, pull of espresso, or quality latte art. Many Pittsburgh businesses happily use the Commonplace beans for their house coffee, and the minimalist logo can be seen on hats, totes and hydroflasks all around the city. As a result of this local fame, the Squirrel Hill location is almost always thick with coffee connoisseurs. If you can find a seat on the weekend this is an excellent place to catch up with friends, do some reading, or bust out some homework. It is also a great place to run into a familiar face or two. Squirrel Hill is a very tight knit community and this is definitely the preferred daytime watering hole for most of us (rivaling Coffee Tree Roasters across the street).Be warned, the word is out on Commonplace. I mentioned above that this shop has an earned reputation, and it has become a very high traffic venue. For this reason the furniture layout was recently reworked to accomodate more customers. The change was definitely a blessing for the Commonplace groupies, but on a cold Saturday afternoon the extra seating is still sucked up like a shallow puddle into a parched sponge. The weekend saturation is a blessing and a curse. Obviously it means that the business is rightfully thriving due to its competitive standards. This benefits the business owner, and the killer baristas who earn their tips with skill and flare. On the flip side, the business has become so popular that it cant always accomodate the fans that enjoy drinking coffee while cooling their heels among post industrial vibes and quiet indie tunes. This exclusivity only drives the hip factor higher, and tends to stretch the line at the register. I write this review with guilty bitterness. I am a long time patron that is slowly finding that one of my favorite coffee shops might not be as dependable as I remember. BUT at the end of the day Im more than willing to sit outside in the cold to enjoy it.
Best coffee shop in Pittsburgh. The coffee is made with care and the space is cute and comfortable with lots of outlets.
Great espresso, cookies to kill for and a delicious rosemary scone and decorative hot chocalate. Limited seating
Noisy, uncomfortable, dark interior. Coffe5ia OK but the Pastries are not house-made, are small, not good quality, overpriced. OK to grab a Coffee for Take-Out.
The understated exterior camouflages itself from the Starbucks crowd and attracts those who take the art of espresso a little more seriously.Consistently solid quality from insanely skilled baristas. In my opinion, the best latte in town, and one of my favorite places to show off to visiting friends. You will want to lick the cup when you finish your latte.
Best Coffee shop in town. Ive tried other Coffee places in the area. Wich, there are six but commonplace Coffee will I continue to choose phenomenal customer service every time. Friendly pleasant I feel welcomed I always recommend this place to friends and co-workers
Excellent atmosphere. Stellar service. Wonderful coffee.
I love coffee here but tables are too close together. And I feel the overall ambience is a bit dark as I always prefer brighter.
An outstanding coffee shop. Employees are friendly and knowledgeable as well extremely skilled. The pastry selection could use some help, but otherwise, an amazing shop.
I always drink my coffee with cream and sugar. Commonplace is one of the only coffee shops I can drink it black. That says a lot about the taste ☕
Great coffee. Priced fairly. Room to hang out and work or chit chat as well.
Always crowded and never a table available to share. You will get the stink eye if you ask a single to share their table for two. Service is not so sharp. Coffee is good.
Got a few cappuccinos and a chemex here over the holiday. Caps were fine, coffee was unbalanced. Not sure whether it was beans or technique. Good, but room for improvement. Much seating but also full on my visits.
This is among the best five coffee shops we have visit of about 150. They do their own coffee roasting offsite but nearby. Multiple brewing options and a few bean options. Today they had an Ethiopian medium-light roast and another option. We went for an individual pourover and it was exceptional. Basic treats on hand for those wanting something a little extra. We will be back for sure!
Great espresso and knowledgeable staff on business practices and coffee bean details.
This is a nice place to hang out though it’s usually pretty crowded with people working. The lavender vanilla syrup sounds weird but is surprisingly refreshing in a latte.
Great place. Not a lot of seating during busy times. Kid friendly and affordable drinks.
Super knowledgeable and friendly staff. Great place to work from. Parking can be tough during the day but side streets offer some options.
Being a regular customer, I went to the Commonplace (on Forbes) everyday to get a cappuccino. The manager charged me 0.5 dollar for the hot water today. She always has a poker face . However, other staff who works there are very friendly . So sorry for such nice coffee shop to have such a poker face manager. What a shame!😫😫
Best damn cupa coffee in Pittsburgh and no one will say a damn word to you while you drink it. PERFECT
Good quality coffee, can get quite busy and sitting can get hard. Good homemade flavors and quality espresso.
Looking for cheap coffee that isnt the major chain stores? Then go here. It has a nice atmosphere and decor and if you want bring your coffee to the library and read a book with your coffee
Excellent coffee and great service! Will definitely be back!!
Great coffee, knowledgeable and friendly baristas. Good atmosphere. Fully recommended!
Chill atmosphere and people, tasty coffee, pretty good beans (like 2.5th-wave beans)
Excellently made cappuccino, barista was friendly and knowledgeable, comfy modern coffee shop atmosphere, and good vibes.
