Such a cool atmosphere! Clearly a lot of care and love went into transforming an old funeral home into such an interesting and fun place to hang out! We got seated right away and our waiter and the owner were so friendly! Food and drinks were amazing too, I can’t wait to come back!

Absolutely loved it. It has a unique feel and look to it. Sort of a art deco meets Roman villa. You can choose to sit outside in the courtyard or inside at one of the bars or tables. I chose to sit outside on a nice sunny day and I was not disappointed. The service was quick, responsive, and attentive. The food was well presented, portioned well, and tasted amazing. I would highly recommend this place as a spot for brunch, lunch, or dinner. In short, if you want a casual but classy place to sit down and enjoy a meal and drinks with friends or someone special, The Abbey should be on your mind.

We enjoyed our brunch here. Not the cheapest option but a great location and nice ambiance. Drinks were good. I had the chicken and waffles and my brother in law had a burger. Service was nice. We ate out in the courtyard but it looks like the inside is just as nice. Definitely worth a visit.

Definitely 5 stars, at least for a quaint lunch spot! My fish (cod) and chips were delectable, as was my hubbys Hot Nashville fried chicken breast sandwich. The fireplace was the perfect ambiance for this chilly spring day, and my dirty classic martini was the bomb. Great service as well. Well definitely return.

The ambience is very nice and I have seen couples of all ages, friends, family (no kids though). Theres outdoor seating, a shaded coffee area room, and big enough seating area in the bar room.Unfortunately, last time we visited we got a table reserved for 9:15 (max 6 people allowed - during pandemic). We ordered starters initially. Unaware of the kitchen close timings, the waitress notified us about the last call and kitchen being closed. This place has a nice bar which is open until late, I guess even after the kitchen is closed. The kitchen closes at 9:30 or 9:45 I believe.Starters that we ordered were very tasty and good in quantity for a table of six!Garlic hummus with soft fresh naan, the yellow curry sauce with the French fries - these are very tasty.

A great bar...HOWEVER, I was just there sitting by an open window on a nice summer night. One person was smoking on the street outside the window.*Now, mind you, I dont smoke. And I dont like the smell of cigarettes. BUT this is a bar!Soon the hostess comes over and explains that she needs to shut the windows of the BAR because the ONE smoker is filling the BAR with smoke!!! I asked if we can ask the ONE smoker to move away from the window. She says no and closes the front window to the BAR on a beautiful Friday night(??????). OK.Eventually the smoker goes back inside so I reopen the window. And I figure if another smoker comes out, Ill close it.Well, the hostess saw the window open again and came right over to close it. I explained that no one was smoking and that Ill police it - which seems like a good compromise for a BAR. Unfortunately she did not see it that way. She abruptly closed the window and said, the window is closed because I said its closed. At that point, I immediately left.

Pointless to call in advance for anything. I called to check if a game was shown on the TVs right in front of the bar. We got to the place, talk to the host, with whom I just talked on the phone, and realized that the bar with the TVs was closed and the only one open was the one without TVs… mmm… that’s exactly what I was asking in the first place over the phone. Anyhow, usually good service unless when incompetent people work in Sunday.

Although the Abby has a great atmosphere, the staff treated us as though we did not belong. After being seated at a table outdoors and ordering drinks, the waitress immediately brought out our checks less than a minute after getting us our drinks and an appetizer. She informed us that you cannot drink at a table as they are meant for people eating. No one told us this until we had already ordered. (And we did order food.) The inside bar space was packed and we were uncomfortable going inside as we are still in a pandemic, but it was clear that the staff and people there do not care. We left as soon as we got the bill, didn’t even finish our drinks because of how uncomfortable it was, and all decided to never go back.

I would give the Abby on Butler Street only one star due to our absolutely terrible server, Christine M and poor management, Zach. Their menu, although extremely limited, was very good and their bar tender was AMAZING. I wish I actually had her name so that I could personally thank her for her great service.Things that went wrong:- My husband had forgotten his phone, so he asked for a paper menu. Christine rolled her eyes and told us the restaurant was saving trees and ink- My husband mentioned he was still waiting for the menu, reluctantly she brought the menu and stood and stared at him to make a decision.- We attempted to order drinks when we ordered our food she left and did not come back with our drinks-When she took another table drink order we flagged her requesting the drinks we had been waiting for. She explained she had forgot what we wanted and that she couldnt remember the other tables drinks and our drinks and she didnt want to waste the paper to write them down.- Reluctantly she wrote them down, but it still didnt help. My husband ordered the Hazy IPA on draft, she brought him out a can. He mention it was the wrong beer and she told him that was the only Hazy IPA they had.... Which we knew was a lie, since he had just had one at the bar.- When it came to ordering. A guest at my table has a severe Gluten Allergy, which we let her know, because the menu is absolutely not gluten-free. He asked if he could order the hummus, but instead of the pita could he have veggies, he would be fine with the up charge. She explained she would have to ask the manager. My guest said that would be fine and in fact he didnt care what veggies they gave him, just anything but a spoon.- I added a Cesare salad to my meal. She warned me that it was a $4 upcharge, which again totally fine.- She completely avoided us at all cost. So much so in an effort not to walk passed our table she would walk around the entire building to get in and out when visiting her other tables.- When our food finally came out, instead of walking around to our table to set our plates, they leaned over the edge of the railing over our heads to hand us the plates. I AM 6 MONTHS PREGNANT and I was handed a scolding hot skillet of mac and cheese over my head to hand to my husband. My Cesare salad did not come out before my meal (as one would want of a salad), she brought it out with my meal, and my guest with the severe gluten allergy got extra pita NO Veggies served with hummus. When she dropped the food we asked about the veggies. She said, this restaurant is so weird. If you would have just stayed at the bar you could have ordered veggies with the hummus, but since you sat at this table we have different rules and there is no substitutions. She then handed my guest a spoon to eat the hummus. He explained he could not eat the hummus because the pita was actually in the hummus causing cross contamination. She suggested a box then. Upset, he agreed to a box. She then proceeded to bring him the tiniest box on earth.- We did not see her again until she cleared our plates and brought our checks.-Very upset about the whole experience, I saw that she charged me $6 dollars for my salad instead of $4, normally I would let it go, but she was absolutely so rude, I couldnt let it go. She told me well she must have been wrong and its $6 and she cant change it because thats what the menu charges.- Noticing we were not happy, in a very snarky tone said Sorry you did not enjoy your experience.- I called the next day to inform the manager of our experience, the host told me to call back later they were too busy to deal with me.- When I called back later, the manager Zack told me, he was not the manager on staff the night before and that he would call the manager from last night and they would have a stern talk with Christine.... Like great, clearly you care about your customer experience.

I actually really enjoy the Abbey. It’s a cool concept, coffee in the AM, drinks in the PM. It’s a cool building keeps getting bigger. The cocktails and coffee are excellent, beer selection is above average, and the food is occasionally creative. But here is the downfall;1). the wifi cuts off too early in the day to be a place to work from. Other restaurants with the same concept keep it on until 5pm.2). It’s also a Benjamin Button restaurant. Their hours get shorter every day, but they keep getting bigger (like 4-5 additions). Honestly the last 6 times I said “let’s go to the abbey!” They were closed or close to closing.Make it more customer friendly so we can be customers! Please take my money. Also, thank you for being open on Mondays. There are 3, maybe 4 restaurants on Butler that are open for sit down service on Mondays.

One of my favorite places in Pittsburgh, hands down. Delicious coffee, great food, amazing atmosphere (it’s a converted funeral home). It’s not as cramped and stuffy as some Pittsburgh restaurants due to limited building space. They have plenty of seating, indoors and out. I’m speaking pre-pandemic. The food is never a disappointment. Love that they offer beer flights and I think whiskey flights at the whiskey bar, as well. So we each ordered a burger and a salad. Our food comes out to us at 945pm. I don’t know how three burgers and three salads take that long but it did. The Abbey is a repurposed funeral home which makes the most of its Gothic design and provides options for great coffee, great drinks, and great food. Within its walls, you will find a Cafe/Coffee Shop, a Pub-style Bar, and Bistro-style dining (each with different hours of operation, so check their website for what is open when). Weve been to this restaurant to dine several times in the past couple of months, each time taking advantage of their beautiful patio on unseasonably warm, gorgeous days. While it is a little on the expensive side for this style of food in Pittsburgh, you definitely get your moneys worth both in quality and quantity, as well as from the pleasurable surroundings. Their Sunday Brunch is fantastic, with enough meat choices to satisfy a Paleo dieters dreams. It includes choice coffee, tea, and orange juice as well as waffles and omelets made to order. They also have a build your own Bloody Mary bar with several types of Bloody Mary mixes to choose from, and a menu of coffee cocktails. There is a very limited brunch food menu offered for those not wanting the buffet. On nice days, the patio is definitely the place to sit. Dining reservations are accepted and highly encouraged, especially if you want a seat on the patio during peak times.

The Abbey is, bar none, my favorite restaurant in Pittsburgh. It has it all - street food snacks, delicious lunch sandwiches, full on entrees, and late night bites. All of which are made excellently. Their curry fries? Life changing. The veggie panini? Makes me just as happy as any meat sandwich would. Their bottled cocktails are always delicious and effective enough to get me happily sloshed at home. Before COVID, my favorite night out would include ending up at the Abbey for a late night snack and hopefully a coffee cocktail to pick me up. I love it so much that on my way back from a work trip, I asked my partner to drive me straight from the airport to the Abbey so I could get their gnocchi and feel at home again.

The Abbey is a really cool location. The ambience is friendly and, in my experience, very popular. Our server, Kate, was awesome. She helped me out with all of my questions and offered solid recommendations. The cocktails were stiff and tasty and the draft list is satisfyingly comprehensive. The bathroom was not pristine, but was spacious. Food wise: I tried the bruschetta for an appetizer which was awesome. The mozarella was delicious with an incredible texture, and the accompanying pesto was very strong in flavor and tied the app together well. The pork schnitzel, which I had for an entree, is the full reason why this review is not 5 stars. The schnitzel itself was too thick and, with the menu included toppings, somehow too rich. As a connosieur of schnitzel I was disappointed. Not included is the picture of the filet ordered by my gf which was phenomenal. Full of flavor and incredibly tender, it was accompanied by beautifully charred brussel sprouts and delightful mashed potatoes. Desert was the excellent malva cake. If you come here you are missing out if you dont try this dessert.Tl;Dr dont get the pork schnitzel sandwich, but do visit this restaurant.

Here we go...Went out for a nice ladies lunch. Party of eight. As soon as I walked in the door I did not feel welcomed. The Hotess took care of the party of folks in front of us right away. So we were anticipating our turn. But to our dismay once he returned he did not even greet us. As Im standing at the podium with a smile on my face. He completely ignored us to answer the phone. So my smile dissipated as we wait for him to finish a reservation for June 12th. Today is May 29th, so with my experience in customer service, I would assume he would have the non urgent call to hold until he got the number in my party and worked on getting us seated. Nope he continued to take the call for a reservation for June 12th. Anyhoo once he completed the phone reservation and ended the call, he finally said hello to us after 10 minutes of waiting and no interaction. Now heres the kicker we asked him if they could seat 8. He immediately with an attitude replied we cannot accommodate a party of 8. With recent Covid restrictions we understood. So we asked to be split 4 and 4. So then he tells us they cannot split parties. Are you kidding.?? We drove miles to eat at the Abbey and because we disclosed that we were a party you could not seat us period.. I never heard of something so absurd. Although to me, it felt like race played a part. The manager was not even apologetic of how we were treated by the hotess. He also told us that we could not be seated at all since it would be splitting a party. So pretty much told us we had to leave.. Long story short THEY WILL NEVER GET MY BUSINESS! Only gave them 1 star because I needed to in order to leave a review. This place treated us awful !

The Abbey’s coffee and drinks are fantastic, and their food is very decent - the AM quesadilla and breakfast burger were both pretty good. Their outdoor patio is a great spot to dine safely during this pandemic and the staff seem to be taking it seriously (i.e., masks worn properly, staff won’t allow groups to congregate while waiting for takeout). Their menu IS very limited and they’re not able to make substitutions at this time, so be wary if substitutions and additions are your thing.
