The Garden Cafe is a truly local coffee joint for Webster Groves natives and those in the surrounding areas. With quirky and eccentric vibes, they seem content with faithfully serving up coffee drinks to their immediate community. They do not offer the most high end coffee, but between their unique decorations, fancy latte flavors, and ideal location, it is always worth a stop when I am in the vicinity.
TLDR: Sub-par coffee and food and extremely rude owner (will not be coming back). As an older reviewer said: owner treats customers like dirt.Today I tried out this café for the first time. I ordered the cold brew which had no taste (it was watered down) and the ham & cheese croissant was not very good (cold in the middle). Even though this was the case, the café itself seemed cozy and friendly (or so I thought). While sitting, an elderly man came up to the counter and asked if the croissant sitting out was the ham and cheese. The owner said to him, If theres ham and cheese in it, then it must be. Thats not so bad, but when the man remarks he doesnt know if this is what he ordered, the owner in a very snarky and arrogant tone told him that, I dont know what you ordered. You need to know before you come up here. Dont come up if you dont know. The man was obviously hurt and appalled by the comment, as was I. As a service industry worker, I know that sometimes its very difficult to deal with customers that are not streamlined to the process, but to practically yell at an elderly man who was clearly getting the food for his entire table is not okay! The customer doesnt have to be God, but yelling at him was extremely rude and unnecessary! When I asked for the owners name (I will not disclose), she confronted me and repeatedly asked why I wanted to know her name. She followed this by saying that shes reluctant to give her name because people have been writing nasty Yelp reviews. This perfectly reflects the horrible customer service the owner gives to customers (the baristas were great) and the lack of accountability she gives herself when people complain. She also said to me in a very mean tone that, If you have a problem, say it to my face. Wow. She terrified me and drove me right out of there. I will never be returning to this establishment, entirely because of the owners bad behavior. Shame on her.
Super cozy. Friendly staff. The smoothies and coffee were good. Well definitely be back to try more on the menu.
I have been looking for a small business to support with my coffee habit. I decided to try this place a few days ago and was pleasantly surprised. I ordered a plain latte with oat milk and the spinach and feta quiche. The coffee is so smooth and has a great flavor. The quiche was unbelievable with a soft creamy filling and a super flaky crust. I believe it comes from another local small business which is wonderful to see! I was informed that it would take a few minutes to heat up and was completely fine with that. I really appreciated the heads up! After that wonderful experience I returned again today. I only ordered the latte this time, but the quality was consistent. I believe this will be my new go to for my morning coffee and the occasional breakfast treat. I look forward to a lot of future visits with this place!
We have just moved into the area and this coffee shop has quickly become our favorite. You arent a number like the bigger chains and each drink is perfectly made.
Nice place. The pastry was fabulous.
Cute, quaint coffee shop with outdoor seating only. Great food and even better coffee.
Delicious pastry, coffee was ok
Very disappointed. I drove past Starbucks, thinking it would be nice to support a locally owned place and sit outside and enjoy the nice weather. There were only 2 people working, and they seemed overwhelmed, so I tried to be extra nice. The girl who took my order and set out my drink and food was so rude! It took forever to get a simple bakery product. But that wasnt even the issue. I understand that they were backed up with orders. But, I dont understand being rude for no reason. And, they had no system for identifying whose order belonged to who, then they got all rude if someone dare ask a question about it. It ruined our night. We were stuck there for an hour waiting for a coffee and a bakery item. Totally wish I would have just gone to Starbucks, instead of bothering them with our order. I wont be back.
Delightful outdoor spacious eating area! Delicious almond Danish and spinach feta quiche! And of course, coffee!
I love it. so much. they have great coffee. they have pinwheels. what more could u ask for
Cozy and quaint this is a hidden Webster Groves charmer. Quite a full menu for a one-person operation. Will customize and add any special touches to your order. Almost like having brunch at home in the living room period a very nice Extra Touch was music on the patio under the Shaded umbrellas. Definitely will return.
Great place for live music and a tea or coffee. I also like the alcoholic options! I especially love the open mic nights.
This is my favorite coffee shop ever. This was the first time I’d ever been, and I had such a great time and a delicious coffee. The short haired older woman who took my order was sweet and conversational and the staff was friendly. Can’t wait to return.
Great place, got drinks fast and they tasted nice. I had a chocolate lavender mocha and enjoyed myself.
Very conscious of covid-19! I like the walk up window and sanitizer next to the card reader and register. The quiche was awesome (theyre from Pie Oh My), and I also got to enjoy the almond joy mocha. Ill be back!
Yummy hot drinks and tasty quiches! Would definitely come back next time were in the state ☺️
Great little place to out with food and coffee
Great cafe. Stopped in here late one night while visiting in-laws. Beverages were excellent. Quiet, friendly ambiance. They have live music Friday and Saturday evenings. A good place to relax and chat or do some work.
I went to enjoy a beverage and watch the owners band perform. Great time. Its also a good place to get a good sandwich or a Danish and coffee.
Me and a co worker went here after we both got off work at St. Louis bread co down the street. We were in our work uniforms and I had a cup of tea with the Panera logo on it. We had planned on coming here to do homework together and get coffee. When we walked in there was only one other customer and a gray haired woman with tattoos working at the counter. We got set up with our computers on a couch in the corner and were about to go up and order when this lady started raising her voice at us to go back to Panera and stop using her wifi. She said “you go drink your Panera tea back at Panera” so we said we were about to order coffee and I said I could throw away my tea and also mentioned that we weren’t using her wifi, we had both connected to personal hotspots because the wifi was private (I later realized the password was hanging on the wall. Oops) but she didn’t seem to care and told us to get out anyway. We never once caused trouble and always ordered something when we went there (even though their coffee is sub par to say the least) but since that day neither of us have gone there and I’ve told many people who also live in Webster the story of “cafe bitch” as I affectionately call her.TLDR; the owner (?) is a horrible lady and kicked me and my friend out for no good reason yelling at us the whole time. And their coffee sucks.Response to the reply I got: um. Duh. I know it’s closed inside. Just like almost every other place right now. This was before COVID hit and I just never thought to put a review. This did happen and I don’t appreciate being called a liar. What kind of person just goes around making up bad reviews? Seems like a stretch to me.Response again: the pettiness in these replies is insane 😂 good entertainment for me and my friends. Also I remember vividly my friend saying he was about to order and the person at the counter saying no and telling us to leave. And there was only the one person in the cafe. Not multiple.
Visited Sat Aug 29 for the musical entertainment hosted just behind the Cafe. Good food & drinks and pleasant weather made for a lovely evening.
Love the baristas, but the owners need to relax a bit. Your staff explained the reward card, I dont need a five minute frantic diatribe over the subject. killed the vibe and honestly dont know that I want to go back after that, despite how awesome the rest of the staff is.Edit: reply to the ownerships rude reply:The program was never explained to me beforehand, and at most places its a stamp per purchase. After I was informed of policy I did not ask for a second stamp in a single day. I did stop by a lot less, because the incentive was decreased, but it wasnt out of malice that I reduced my visits down to no more than once a day. As for the almond milk, I did not realize that it was extra, as I would have happily paid the extra charge.Your staff are kind and knowledgeable, and your products decent (though expensive I always felt they were priced accordingly with the quality). You, though, are rude and I will be taking my business elsewhere. Im surprised that you would choose to take complaints as a personal attack, something I notice now after looking at other negative reviews.I would strongly advise you to look at how other companies handle responding to negative reviews in the future, because honestly this manner comes off as a bit childish. All the best to your staff, but I will not be returning after this unsatisfactory and frankly insulting interaction.
Great drinks, awesome shows, friendly staff and homey environment.
Quality food and coffee
Love this place its so cute! I just had a tea so I cant comment on the food. The morning that I was there there was just one person working and she really needed some help. Hopefully they get it for her!
What a special folksy Bohemian place. A real gem. No corporate feel here at all. Musical, mystical, and homey.
Nice local cafe. Open mic night on Thursdays - this is a community highlight. People in Webster Groves come out to show their talent. The couple that own the place are really encouraging. If you want to meet people that work at art, cone out here.
I like their decor. Cozy environment. Great music. Friendly staffs. You guys should give yourself a try for this place. Highly recommend.
If you are tired of going to the Big Box stores such as Saint Louis bread CO or Kaldis then this place for you. Conveniently located in Webster and it will have all the coffee style drinks and pastries that you may desire. Also a lunch menu. Cant wait to go back.
Cozy place for conversation or as an alternative work space. Great selection of unusual syrups and baked goods. Evening entertainment and outdoor seating make this a great daily retreat destination any time of the day.
Esay access from East and West to several popular chain stores and Driver License Office. (It is just Driver. Check your license. :~) )
This is my all-time favorite coffee shop in St. Louis. Located in historic Webster Groves, this little cafe is eclectic and comfy. You can get a reasonably priced drink with a homemade pastry in/on reusable and recyclable dishes. While youre sipping, you can relax in the corner and enjoy live music or talk with friends old and new.
Adorable cottage style coffee and tea hang out in the quaint historic district of Old Webster Groves. Lots of natural light. Cute outdoor garden. Under new ownership as of July 2017. They have pastries, soufflés, tamales, soups, sandwiches and occasional live music and they are working on getting their liquor license to serve wine, beer, mimosas and coffee drinks. Cant wait! Super friendly atmosphere. Very comfortable.
Pleasant neighborhood space to meet up our enjoy a quiet few minutes. Since the last change in ownership, the coffee quality has become somewhat inconsistent. Not all baristas are adequately trained. I was there several times over two weeks & had okay iced coffee, good hot coffee, two excellent lattes, & two awful lattes (one tasted like burnt beans & the other was half a cup of bubbly foam). They often have musicians in. Some are quite good.
Very poor attention - we were completely ignored for a solid 5 minutes before the woman working asked what we wanted. Drip coffee was okay, decent price for bottomless. Lots of seats, including some outdoor areas. Whole display case of pastries, and some sandwiches from nearby restaurants.
I was a little disappointed in my experience. They were out of the first two items we tried to order and there were already other menu items blacked out as unavailable. I understand that these things happen sometimes, but one of the workers seemed a little defensive about it. What they did have available wasnt very good. The lemon pound cake was kind of dry. I didnt care for the coconut milk either. It was a bit too chunky for my taste. My husband said his coffee was fine.
This place is quiet. I love quiet. The dainties and coffee drinks are very good. Perfect place to read the paper or study or meet with people.
A good cup of chai latte. Or latee. Some sort of chai stuff they make is good.
Love the atmosphere and pretty much everything about this place. Was extremely disappointed to see that you use #6 plastic as I generally prefer to support businesses that are up to date on environmental concerns.Number 6 plastics are mixed with styrofoam and are not recyclable. It can release potentially toxic breakdown products (including styrene). Particularly when heated. It has been found to leach styrene–a neurotoxin and possible human carcinogen–and has been banned in cities like Portland, Ore. and San Francisco.
Good coffee, but great study or work space! Flavored coffees are not my thing, but they have some really unique lattes and mocha. Its a laid back and leisurely place.
What a fun place. Stopped in for coffee and got to enjoy live music. Very friendly staff.
Unfortunately, I got myself addicted to caffeine. Therefore, I go here almost every day and get an iced mocha. It’s one of the best iced mochas I’ve had. Way better than Starbucks.
Super cute cafe. the woman working behind the counter was really nice. the loaded potato soup was awesome, will be going back
This place is great. It has a charming atmosphere, good coffee drinks, and very nice people working there. I highly recommend to anyone who just wants to sip on a cappuccino while writing an essay or writing their lab reports.
*I dont usually leave bad reviews* Cute place but my latte was not good... after trying to drink it, gave up and asked to dump it out for a cup of drip coffee. The woman refused to allow me to fill my cup with the drip coffee. I find this to be rude since I spent twice that amount on the latte, plus bought a mediocre muffin and even tipped her! Probably wouldve lost 50 cents on the actual coffee. Wouldnt recommend.
Had a great iced chai latte with almond milk! Love that they have off street parking.
This cafe is always amazing. Great coffee, cool vibes, and a wonderful staff. However, Im writing this review today because I got the best coffee of my life today. Efficient and friendly, Ted made my coffee with ease, all while conversing and making my day a million times better! *GREATJOB*
The Matcha Latte was good. Nice atmosphere.
Wonderful, comfortable spot and great atmosphere! The lavender latte was AMAZING. Looking forward to going back soon! This place is a gem.
I ordered a dirty chai latte and raspberry scone with icing. The latte was pretty good and the scone was one of the best Ive ever had. The atmosphere was quiet and relaxing, a great space to study or read a book (they have a shelf of books if you dont bring your own). The service was as much as I would expect from a coffee shop, one friendly person who brought me the two things I ordered. They also have their own parking lot which is convenient. Overall its what Ive been looking for in a coffee shop between South City, where I live, and West County, where I work.
Nice people, nice place, good coffee! Was looking for an eclectic, St. Louis - specific cafe (visiting from out of town) and this was the right choice. Friendly service.
I love the coffee and the atmosphere. Wish the staff was a little more friendly as I’m used to at other coffee shops, but I’ll still keep coming back.
I have been here once before and the barista was courteous and wonderful. However, my partner and I visited today and were treated extremely rude by I believe the owner. So inappropriate, we canceled our order and left. We really love supporting local businesses and we realize everyone has so challenging days. Blessings thankfulness and love to her and hopefully this is not indicitive of how she treats others.
My iced latte was yummy, and I bought a sandwich from the hill to share with a friend. It was really good and perfect to share. The atmosphere is comfortable, and relaxing.
Just a pleasant place to get coffee, pastry and quiet. The coffee is very good. The service is pleasantly smiling and the coffee isnt too hot and overcooked.
Love this local coffee haunt. I meet my kids here or even have meetings here. Great coffee, home-like, comfortable setting without the chaotic noise of a national chain
Great drinks and staff! I love their chai tea. Great baked goods too!
Good coffee and espresso. Great place to sit solo and work or meet people.
Wonderful intimate café with frequent live music and an array of food/drinks.
Unless you are a cute college student, 20 something years old, or a male that comes in regularly, the owner barely acknowledges you. I was going daily for a while. I would study, check emails, and meet w friends. Always ordered food/drink. Not once was I spoken to, acknowledged or greeeted by the owner. If any of the above type people came in though, he was all smiles and a Chatty Cathy. I wanted to support a small local business but decided this def was not the place for me. Way too many other places to go where I feel welcome and appreciated as a customer. And vice versa that I appreciate the staff of the business that I patronize.
Wonderfully funky locally-owned coffee shop with locally-sourced prepared eats
The coffee was great--its from La Cosecha, which also has a cafe in Maplewood, and there are lots of options. I didnt try any of the pastries or snacks since I had just eaten, but it was tempting. They have sweet and savory items available. It would also be a good place to go have coffee on the patio in nice weather.
Friendly service. Reasonable prices. Quiet enough for intelligent conversations.
Great atmosphere, good food and drink, awesome music... tonight being Dave Black😊👍
Garden Cafe is a wonderful venue for live acoustic music. An intimate listening room serving typical coffee house fare, and boasting one of the areas top destinations for open mics every Thursday night from 7to9pm
Friendly and comfortable. Has a bunch of coffee flavors that Starbucks doesnt have.
Quaint little coffee shop. Staff was friendly. My iced chai tea was good. Just remember that their pastry selection rotates, so they dont have everything every day.
Easy to find a corner/comfy spot for studying or chatting! The food and coffee is great as well.
Cute cottage like place. Lavender White Chocolate Mocha was pretty yummy!
Great local coffee shop
Nice little local coffee shop. They had fresh local baked goods.
Adorable little place! Needs more business! Its so lovely and small, and the staff is wonderful!
Brewbops festival today! Awesome music, coffee, brews, wine and atmosphere!
Be sure to ask for a real cup if you are planning to dine in vs a togo cup which seems to be the standard.Great local String Bean coffee for a bottomless cup.
Staff is great and a nice atmosphere. Better than Starbucks if you ask me.
Cute, great baked goods, nice place to sit and visit.
Very quaint and intimate place. Live music on a beautiful Saturday night, good selection of drinks and nosh!
Welcoming and friendly place. We had a larger group visit during a Sunday afternoon, and they had a place and food/drinks for all of us! Thank you!
Good place to meet a friend for a coffee and/or pastry. Art on the walls and local Webster Groves clientele make this place very welcoming.
The best coffee in st. louis !! the owners are so nice and the music is always wonderful !!
Quaint & cozy atmosphere with great pastries and coffee for breakfast. I will definitely be a returning customer
Great place for live local music and coffee!
Great little coffee shop, fun atomsphere, good desserts, even live entertainment on the weekends!!
Cozy little coffee shop. Open Mike night, great music
Always friendly service, a nice place to share a cup and a quiche with a friend. The perfect location to run in and out too.
Adorable and cozy atmosphere. Great menu and awesome staff
Love it! Comfortable and usually quiet; The Garden Cafe is an excellent place to plant yourself to do some school work, or to grab an iced tea on a warm day. Outdoor seating is available, and being seated in downtown Webster is most pleasant. When dining inside, the Garden Cafe feels more like a home than it does another instance of some chain restaurant; this is a good thing. True to the establishments name, there happens to be a perennial garden behind the shop. Pastries are served as well as drinks, but entire meals are not available per se, so one must load up on scones and stuffed croissants if you are hungry. The Garden Cafe is often visited by students from near by Webster University, and no cost Wi-Fi is available.
Great coffee and food and wonderful music Thurs Fri and Sat. Don’t miss this establishment
Nice atmosphere and staff. Good coffee.
Sropped in after attending the local art fair for a glass of wine and to listen to some music. All is ok, but the lost stars are due to glasses that appeared to not be washed, like a sticky feeling you would not have with a clean glass IMHO.
Very good pasterys, waited 10 minutes to warm it up, and it was still cold - ! Cool little place good coffee, I will go back. They have live music at times
Nice atmosphere but no gluten free options
I thought they had pastries from La Bonne Bouchee according to a story in the Webster-Kirkwood Times. I was disappointed to find that by 3 p.m. there were no more pastries available. They were also out of cold-brew coffee. So my advice is to get here early before they run out of the good stuff!
