The owners were very welcoming and knowledgeable when it came to camera equipment and accessories. They definitely knew more than me, so it was nice to learn new things from them. If Im every in Honolulu again, I will be stopping by for all my camera/photography needs. Always love to support local businesses, I highly recommend this place.
I have been a customer with Kaimuki Camera for many years and I always love going there. I know that Neil and his wife will always give me good advice when buying photographic equipment and they have treated me like family. I dont understand the negative comments here but I guess you cant please everyone.
I’ve been to this tiny shop a couple of times on previous visits. My only complaint is simply about the size of the place. The itty bitty storefront has maybe fifty sq ft of customer space and due to the current Covid restrictions (Oct 2020) only one customer is allowed in at a time. There is hardly room for more anyway, but oh well.I called about availability of the R6 body only and they had them on hand, while CanonUSA was back ordered on them. Pro camera also had an R6 but only the kit lens version. I stopped by to get the R6 and all was good; they also had the R5 which was also b-o at Canon. They also had the RF100-500 L in stock AND the RF extenders. I was quite surprised actually that they had this inventory. As far as service is concerned I had great service. I did get a little of a “rushed” vibe from the lady but not from the fellow, who answered my barrage of questions regarding the R6 vs R5.I was moving up from the EOS R but not certain which to get for my usage. After a bit I finally realized that the hurry sensation was purely legitimate as they were closing shortly and there were two customers waiting outside! If anything, I owe the shop an apology for not seeing that I was holding people up.
I hate taking photos especially for Passport/ID . They did a great job and I actually like the picture
Great little mum and pop store. More for the Canon enthusiast but good selection of other items.
Came to buy a battery and charger as I left my 5D3 battery charger behind. The owner (Neil I think) was very friendly and accommodating on the phone and in person. I shopped for a new strap while there and he showed me several models, unboxed them and took the time to fit them on my camera and on me. I couldn’t ask for better or more attentive service!
Great place to buy equipment and get expert printing done.
They are my go to spot for my printing gear and paper. Super nice people and they have a great selection of papers (and more in back if youre looking for something specific). Prices match what I can get on Amazon BUT I can get it today and not have to wait. They dont carry Nikon gear though (and Im one of THOSE people)... so my camera gear itch isnt scratched. But if you shoot Canon, its the place to go.
Very good place to get passport photos for most countries. Also a dealer for anything Canon. They also have a lot of camera a accessories.
Its a good shop, albeit a bit small. Despite the small space they have a lot of supplies.
Stopped in a few times 20 years ago when I needed bits and pieces for my Olympus OM-1. On a recent return trip, I was pleasantly surprised to find Kaimuki Camera looking much the same and still run by the same friendly people. I got a great deal on an Olympus OM-D e5 body with converter for my non-4/3 lenses, this before they had become available in Canada. This made my return visit spectacular, camera-wise. The staff are great, local-kine, I stopped in several times just to talk story. Definitely worth the visit, and they have lots of stuff besides Canon.
I was very happy to find Kaimuki Camera. They had the Canon camera my daughter needed and were very helpful to setup everything up and test it out for me even though there were several other customers in the store. Try to do that at a big box retail store! Thank goodness there is at least on mom and pop camera store left on the island.
I looked everywhere to find an SD card for my Nikon D50 (doesnt accept SDHC) and the owner was so nice and helpful and immediately knew which SD card I needed. Thank you so much! You saved the pictures from my vacation!! I will visit again the next time I am in Oahu and I recommend this shop for all of your camera needs!
Yea Definitely didnt experience good initial customer service here. Its ashamed, because I Definitely planned on spending thousands of dollars here. Not anymore.
Went to purchase a lens, the bloke was honest and told me not to buy it from him as the warranty may not be covered in my home country. I rate honest as a great value to have, hence 5 stars.
The owners were super helpful. I asked a lot of novice questions & they answered them all with patience.
Exceptional service and a great business. If you are visiting the island and need a lens for your DSLR, this is the place to visit. The Company has been in business for some time and it shows. The staff are knowledgeable, and dont try to push equipment that you dont need. Id return and purchase from them again. If you are staying in Waikiki, its a 10 min cab ride away. Dont bother going to the main mall, they dont have a speciality store like this one.
Extremely knowledgeable staff helped me determine exactly what manfreto plate I needed for my travel tripod and also provided good advice regarding a netural density filter. Its a small shop but really good inventory - I was able get everything I needed right on the spot. Its not cheap but not unreasonable either; highly recommended if, like me, you need good advice and products quickly so as not to waste vacation time.
Was visiting Oahu and went in looking for a polarizing filter for my camera. Was expecting to pay $250+ for a B+W as I know they are quite good, but the fellow here sold me on a Mayumi, showed me some sample photographs he had shot with this brand. $75! He said they arent well known out of Japan (where they are made) but are of fantastic quality. I was most impressed with the results! Thank you!
I was skeptical because of the reviews so I decided to create my own experience. It was flawless. Its a family store, which both were kind and helpful.
Will not go to this store again. Purchased a lens leash, the adhesive fell off almost immediately. Took it back with a receipt and the sales person denied it was theirs. The sales person had a dismissive attitude, was snappy & said I should write to the company to get a replacement. They would not replace a $4 item! Poor attitude, poor service, no respect!
Good small local camera shop with lots of variety. Carries Canon.
I dont understand the negative comments. Ive been there a few times and had nothing but good service. The owners are friendly and very knowledgeable. The selection is outstanding, especially if you use Canon.Take the negative reviews with a grain of salt and check it out for yourself.
Best place in town that sells high quality camera equipment.
Family owned, friendly pro camera store with lots of much needed bags and accessories. Very, very knowledgeable and helpful.
They were very friendly and helpful.
Had exactly what I needed for my M10. Very friendly and helpful.
The only place to go for Canon cameras and assorted equipment! Pro, semi-pro, novice, or beginner, you will find what you need and get top notch customer service!
I have never experienced such poor customer service in any retail store let alone a camera shop. I called asking about the pricing and availability of a Canon zoom lens and the person on the phone was curt and made it obvious that they had no time for my inquiry. I thought it was a fluke (I understand that sometimes its busy or you get a poor sales person on the phone) so I decided to visit the store in person. There was only one other customer in the store besides me and it seemed like he was having a personal conversation with the vendor. I stood at the counter for no less than 10 minutes before they stopped their conversation just long enough for the vendor to shout across the store what it was I wanted. I asked about the Canon zoom and the vendor literally eyed me up and down before declaring the price as if the very mention would send me scurrying out of her store. The look she gave me when I asked to try it out was absolutely withering. I fail to understand how this store can stay in business. They gave me absolutely no reason to shop at their store:1. Their pricing was not competitive when compared to other retailers like Best Buy and especially when compared to an online vendor like BH or Adorama.2. Contrary to what others have stated Kaimuki camera had very poor in store inventory but would offer to order any equipment you wanted if you paid in full with a no return policy!3. Their manners and customer service is the absolute poorest I have ever experienced.I regularly make it a point to patronize local stores over online vendors or retail giants even when the pricing is more expensive. If Kaimuki Camera excelled even a little in any of the areas above I would gladly give them my business - unfortunately I dont intend to waste any more time with them. Their business will go under eventually, its a wonder theyve lasted this long.
Great customer service.
Ive been a customer of Kaimuki Camera for nearly two decades now. Myself and many, many other professional photographers rely on Kaimuki Camera to have the things we rely on for a living. The service isnt as polished as, say, the Apple Store, then again its a quirky little Mom & Pop with the BEST Canon and Fuji inventory on the island. Period. Need a Canon 600 f/4, 85L, and a 1DX body last-minute? How about a Fuji X-T1 and a few prime lenses? Well this is the only shop you can walk into and hope to buy all of these things on the spot. Its a special order at every other shop in the state.I dont understand the negative reviews, especially that genius who gave 1 star because Kaimuki Camera doesnt carry Nikon and didnt know of any shops that did. If theyre a CANON and FUJI dealer ONLY (the big ass Canon signage in the window, and the lack of Nikon signage should have been a clue as well), why the hell should they know where to find Nikon stuff!? Talk about being an entitled, terrible customer. FYI there are no Nikon dealers on Oahu as of 6/2015 either, unless you count the big box retail stores so again Im not sure why anyone would complain as they werent lying when they said they didnt know of any shops. There are none. As for those who felt they were treated rudely, Ive never experienced this in the shop. Not in two decades. Now the service isnt super amazing especially when theyre busy, but its also because its a tiny shop and if they are with other customers, sometimes youve gotta wait to be helped. The only time Ive seen a customer treated rudely was when they walked in and tried to interrupt an ongoing conversation that staff was having with another customer. And rude customers like that get treated rudely in return. I dont disagree with that policy. Neil & Patty are very up-front, and if their questions may seem blunt at times they dont mean to be offensive...but some dont like that approach. Ive never had bad advice from them, and their honesty is what has kept me onboard as a customer all these years.Their pricing for cameras/lenses/tripods are on par with Amazon pricing, accessories are a little pricier. Yeah, they arent gonna offer the same worry-free returns as Costco but is that really surprising!? Duh they aint Costco. Kaimuki Camera is locally owned and the last independent camera shop standing in Honolulu. If youre a pro who needs something higher-end like TODAY, or if you need something esoteric like a 40.5mm UV filter or a cable shutter release (remember those?), there is literally no other option on Oahu.
NO service! NO return policy! I have bin there couple times to buy lens and photo-equipment and there I have bought nothing. Dont spend your time on this rood poor store!
If your Trying to find anything for Nikon its a waste of your time. He only have stuff for Canon cameras. And had no recommendations on where to go. Smh
