The Horizon Books store is one of those places you wish you would have found earlier. Huge selection of titles. Massive amounts of magazines. Great food. Excellent coffee, fresh and lots of flavor. Lots of seating. You can sit in the cafe, downstairs, or outside. If you like people watching, outside is the way to go. The staff is warm and friendly. The prices are very reasonable. You can be come a member for more savings.
A nice bookstore…if you don’t notice some of the books they stock. The one that was the most upsetting was the flagrant conspiracy theory book “The Truth About Covid-19” by Chelsea Green (with a foreword by Robert f Kennedy jr of course…) which peddles in disinformation and downplays the deadliest pandemic we’ve ever seen. Please stop trying to profit off of misinformation—people’s lives are at stake.
This place is great. Its a nice calm getaway from the often hectic energy of downtown Traverse City. They have a pretty decent curated selection of literature and graphic novels. They actually had an artist geometric grids notepad that I have been looking for everywhere! Very cool and unique finds here. The woman at the register that rang me up was very sweet and kind. I genuinely like this bookshop.
This is an amazing book storeWe came upon it during a short visit to traverse City in October. I think that the quality of selection and service at this store equals any that I have encountered in my hometown seattle. Traverse City clearly welcomes many visitors each year and any visitor with an interest in books should stop by this store.
Absolutely lovely local bookstore. They have some great deals on a lot of their books. I got a $20 book for $5! The staff is super friendly and helpful. Be sure to check out Horizon Books whenever youre in Traverse City!
Great selection of current times as well as Michigan authors and other interest. Great knowledgeable staff. Nice coffee bar too! Super location.....
I love this bookstore. The selection is excellent. I always seem to find great nonfiction books here that I never knew existed.
I love this place! Horizon is my go to bookstore. I have found every book that Ive been looking for there. The staff is very friendly and often go out of their way to help their customers.
Always one of my favorite stops when Im in Traverse City. Such a unique and inviting bookstore.
We love this bookstore!Great selection and friendly staff.
Great bookstore with large selection of books. Great knowledgeable staff.
Great old school bookstore. Needs comfortable chairs to relax and peruse
Great staff, excellent coffee drinks, friendly atmosphere. If they dont have it, then theyll get it! Forget buying books online. GerryCastino.Com, C21 Northland, Fine Homes and Estate
Everyone is always super helpful! and if they dont have a book that you want in stock, they can order it and i believe have it shipped directly to your home address- dont quote me on that, but they for sure can order whatever book youd like and it will be delivered to Horizon for your pickup :) Current purchases are pictured. I like Horizons because they have a lot of local northern Michigan writers, history books, etc..
Horizon Books is a gem of an old-fashioned independent book store. They have everything you want (and many things you didnt know you needed) with a friendly, knowledgeable staff to help you find your way. The building itself is cozy with a coffee counter and a fireplace. This place is the real deal--a true book lovers favorite book store ever.
Super helpful staff and so happy they stay open late for after-dinner book shopping, even on a Sunday night.
If you like vibe of a small town book store, this fits the bill. Local talent represented, but a good variety in almost every genre.
This place had fantastic coffee. I know I should talk about the selection of books, but the coffee was very good, and the folks were polite and friendly.
Such a great spot for books! Downtown TC wouldnt be the same without it.
I was able to get the books 📚 I wanted thanks to the wonderful and knowledgeable sales staff
If u Read gud or mayb want that 1 day, cum here to spend dollar$?
I often times just come here as a place to go to for Air Conditioning during the summer days and heat for the winter months. When walking all around the downtown area and such. A very nice, relaxing and calm environment to say the least. Especially in the later hours of the evening. A lot of books to choose from and the WiFi has had its issues due to the high volume of individuals trying to constantly access it at any given time, but still works more times than not.But dont hold me to that during the National Cherry Festival, its overloaded often. Which cannot be helped Id have to imagine. Anyway, good staff and are always friendly and knowledgeable. Nice place with a lower area as well with a nice little eatery, sometimes hosts some musicians and other what have yous down there. Always a good experience here.
Lovely store and staff are friendly and helpful. They treated my 10 yo very kindly when he asked for help, and staff have great recommendations if you ask. We return regularly.
Love this bookstore. I have been coming here since I was little.
The spot for a latte after 5pm. They have a great selection of local history books and art🥰
Super friendly and helpful staff. Best selection in TC!
Always has a good selection of not best sellers along with having the best sellers.
What a wonderful bookstore! Wish there were more like it!
Great collection of American literature both in fiction and non fiction.
Always an excellent selection of books.
Loved the book store, but it had the absolute worst coffee. I had to throw it out after one sip. Will not order latte ever again there
Always find what I am looking for!
Good stock and very helpful. Drink a coffee while you browse!
Excellent customer service, friendly staff, amazing selection of popular and less common books. A go to destination whenever Im in Traverse City!
Great coffee bar, very friendly and sweet staff. Lots of different and open seating options as well
Great atmosphere and a large book selection. Very easy to navigate through. Friendly staff. Overall very enjoyable spot to visit if youre looking for a book
Busy! Nice place. Found some good reads. Very strict on wearing a mask as they should be.
Always a great selection! Definitely a good place to stop if you love to read!
Great place to meet for coffee
Son Aidan stopped in and found a Call of Cthulhu graphic novel, got a paper cut. They were kind at the desk and found some Band-Aids for him.
Good selection across a variety of topics. Beautiful space with coffee bar for those dragged in by a book worm. We ended up getting 5 books which is unusual for us! The staff was friendly and they very clearly cared about their customers.
I use to have an ex that sold her books here, and this place was different back then. Seems as though they closed a floor and the bathroom off now. Went in as my current gf likes bookstores, and she needed to use the bathroom, which she couldnt because of the above. Selection of books seemed to be less too.
Love this place but sales clerk was busy and irratable. Plus no real adult coloring books available
Great selection and great service.
Lovely book store with a large selection. The childrens section was great. We loved the curated collection of books featuring local culture, locations, and history! If you are a teacher, be sure to ask for a teacher discount!
Nice local business and a great Calvin and Hobbs selection
Awesome local bookstore, its always a reliable source for new books and classics.
So grateful for this community hub! My son and I enjoy spending time perusing books and just hanging out in this space (pre-COVID). The staff is fun and knowledgeable.
They had a lot of selections and lots of books about traveling around Michigan which is what I was looking for, my bf loves history and they also had a very big selection in that area as well! Met our needs!
The best!
A local store with a great selection. Buy from them, not Amazon.
A good general service bookstore.
Cool place
So excited to finally go into the best book store in Michigan. Lots of store adaptions to accomodate safe shopping. This bookstore is a downtown landmark and one of the many reasons people love to visit our town.
So happy that theyre not closing. Always a great selection of books and great customer service.
I love this place. The great selection of Local and Michigan books makes me so happy. Love all the books and products and cozy atmosphere. Please stay with the city❤
Horizon Books is a great bookstore! It also has a cafe on the main floor and downstairs. Downstairs is also a great place to hang out to read, play a game with friends, or do work. Horizon Books has a good, wide range selection of books too.
I have only visited twice and I love books but even though covid-19 is going around the staff can be a bit nicer
This has always been a great book store and more! Its spacious and the basement area is great for casual gatherings. Sad to know that Horizon is closing this year.. Will be greatly missed..
Went in for a specific book but unfortunately the last copy was sold, however found two other books so totally made the trip worth it!
The staff is very friendly and knowledgeable. They are also very well set up for service during the current Covid19 issues.
Huge store, well lit and covid-19 aware. Only new books but can get older ones.
I always love this going to this book store. The selection is like no other book store out there, and the staff is always nice!!
My wife and I make visiting Horizon Books a ritual when we visit Traverse City every year. A fantastic independent bookstore that reminds you of how things used to be before buying online became the norm. Pick up a book or magazine from here, keep supporting independent retailers!
Only my second time here, but it reminds me of the original Borders Books, before the acquisition by KMart (IIRC). Knowledgeable, friendly staff. A great selection of regional authors and books of interest of northern Michigan. On this trip, I picked up a photo book of Petoskey and Harbor Springs, an area that I have visited and sailed for almost 30 years. There is a nice selection of signed books and collectibles along with new releases.
Really cool bro
Love coming here when we are up north. Great bookstore with a lot of variety
Love this bookstore! I used to go in as a kid, and going back as an adult was so amazing. There are three stories with a large selection and great staff. They also have a huge collection of signed books, so go there if youre looking for something special.
Nice to see a real book store and not just some chain store.
Inviting. Good safety precautions for COVID.
Love this place
Nice clean and well organized bookstore. Cool collector and signed book case. Support your local bookshop!
Excellent bookstore. Not as cozy as some others downtown, but because of their size, theyre able to carry so many titles. I especially love their local / Michigan authors titles and local / Michigan history shelves. Added bonus, they have excellent coffee there.
Horizon books is awesome. Open late and catering to all tastes, everything from childrens, to politics, to true crime. They also have a cute little cafe coffee shop inside. Fun too is if you buy a best seller you get 20% off. The team is always helpful. I cant say enough good things about this local bookstore.
I met with a friend here for some coffee and I really enjoyed this place. They have been open for a very long time and havent actually changed much in the last 15 years since I have been out west. I was very pleased to see that this place is still here because I used to go there pretty frequently when I was younger.
Nice small book store but not a large variety of books
This is such a great book store! Its extremely cozy and perfect for studying or working while drinking a cup of coffee. Friendly staff and very helpful.
There are two bookstores in Traverse City in way walking distance that compliment one another. Horizon is a great tourist bookstore. The section of Michigan-specific books and authors is excellent. If you love cards and journals they have a truly delicious selection upstairs. The cafe downstairs is perfect for hanging out with a good book, as are the tables on the patio.
I am glad the owners are still open! But the selection is much smaller than the last time I visited. Their basement is empty, no longer full of those great bargain books they used to have.
Its a very fine bookstore.
One of my favorite places to grab a coffee and wander around finding gifts. If im looking for a specific book, even if its available on Amazon, Ill usually be able to find it at Horizon too! Their pricing is reasonable and youre supporting an awesome local business when you shop here instead. Theyre always on my list at Christmas to make a pit stop for interesting finds.
Great bookstore. Large selection and a good number of signed copies too! Lots of choices in the childrens section, and the staff was helpful.
I love this store! Has a unique and excellent selection of books!
Horizon Books is a mainstay in downtown Traverse City, Michigan. My kids and grandkids know Horizon Books!
This has long been my favorite book store. The staff are knowledgeable, helpful and caring. They offer a coffee and snack bar, along with a cafe and lots of comfortable seating. Along with all of the current best sellers they offer an extensive collection of bargain books and an impressive collection of periodicals. They are the store every reader dreams of!
Great bookstore. Large areas to read etc. Have a little cafe for coffee and desserts. Would recommend
Great books, but it would be nice if they added manga
Coffee to die for. Excellent knowledge of books.
My favorite book store in Traverse City! Great childrens section with a wide selection. 3 levels allow them to carry all sorts of books. The clearance section has a lot of great finds and little treasures.
Three floors of books! The basement has a lot of bargain books and old best sellers, which are loosely organized but still easy to sort through. There is an author reading area for events. The main floor has the newer books and coffee shop. I have not tried the coffee because I must always come in after that part is closed. I was excited to find some books by authors I know, but it’s hit and miss as far what book they’ll have from a series (I found only book 3 of a series). This of course is not the book store’s fault, but how book buying and selling with suppliers/publishers goes. The upstairs is mostly note cards and other gift-type things. They do have a great selection of local books and merchandise. The staff are usually busy behind the counter, but then I haven’t needed help when I go in so this hasn’t mattered.
A favorite local bookshop. Ive been going here for over 20 years. Its a must-stop every time I come to Traverse. Ive discovered some of my favorite books here [Here, by Richard McGuire - look it up!].
Love a good bookstore. A rare thing now. You can spend a lot of time here. Appreciate the coffee bar and goodies too
Their are a million reasons to visit Traverse City. But for me, Ill make a trip just to get my fill on books for a few months. Horizon Books has more reasonable pricing than place like Barnes and Noble, while still having an arguably bigger and more diverse selection. On top of the selection Horizon Books still maintains a local friendliness in its staff.
A Traverse City treasure. Been here for more than 50 years. Now historically located in the old Penneys building. Coffee bar upstairs and down. Reading nooks, easy to navigate, maps and charts of great lake region galore. One can spend hours here
