Cant say enough about Sheafe Street Books- it is everything a book shop should be. Ken (owner) is always so helpful and pleasant to talk to and always helps me find and order books I may be looking for. I also always seem to find books I wasnt looking for but needed in the shelves each time Im in :)

Owner Ken is as much a find as any of the treasures in this cozy, charming bookshop. He tried to talk me into a cheaper version of a book I selected! Treasure hunter’s paradise. Excellent variety - new, old, mainstream, quirky, rare, local - across genres, packed into a tiny, tidy space with a petite reading nook. I picked up something for everyone in my family and throughly enjoyed my time in Ken’s magical little shop. Great vibe!

We were hoping for more of a selection....we were looking for more recent fiction and childrens and romance. We found little of those. For some topics, though, there was a good selection. Proprietor was friendly. This store is tiny and if there are more than five shoppers, itll be crowded, at least IMO.

Amazing bookstore. Amazing selection of books, both new & used, and fairly priced. If you are a book lover, you definitely want to go here. Worth a trip. He also took the time to let me see their very early copy of Alice in Wonderland, because I collect them. 10/10!

This is a great place for old books. They have a lot of novels and paper bags that you would love to read. The owner is a very friendly New Englander.Fits very well with a stroll through the quaint streets of old Portsmouth in particular when you buy one of their travel guides

This is the type of bookshop youd find walking down a random alleyway in a small seaside town where the walls are filled floor to ceiling with books, and you would randomly stumble upon a magical book...which, is pretty much exactly this place.

Cute little nook in the wall book store! My friend brought me, its actually just inside a house but it feels like a dragons hoard, or a magical hidden library. Definitely give a look if youre in the area. There are lots of older books, but also some of the new ones too! Good for local finds.Be wary in the winter though, the sidewalks are quite slick because of port towns refusing to not use bricks.

This is such a cute little store. I was surprised at how many books there were for such a small space, but I spent a good half hour in here just looking through all of the choices. They are all catagorized by genre, and author, and the owner is very nice

It was so cozy and the owner truly knew and owned many different used books of all kinds. Not much walking space between maze of bookcases. Loved the place.

I was referred to Sheafe St Books by a friend, and I am sure glad I stopped by! Tucked down a side street very near the hustle and bustle of Portsmouth, it provided a much needed respite. What an atmosphere owner Ken has created - serene, quiet, intellectual - I wanted to spend the entire day there! Lots of interesting books to peruse, and I came away with an arm full!

I love this little bookstore. Its packed with great titles and the intimate, authentic feel of the place makes me want to spend time there. The owner is personable and helpful, and my impression is that every book on the shelves is carefully selected by someone who loves books. Twice when I bought books there the owner told me a little story related to the book (i.e., the childrens book that belonged to his daughter and the time he met Toni Morrison), which makes the books seem just a little more special.

Small but well-packed little store in the heart of Portmouth. Not the place you go to if you want a Barnes and Noble, but the place you go where you can love the smell of books and slink around the shelves finding novel stuff (pun intended) for quite a while.
