Not a fan of Northern T.V. Ive had multiple bad experiences with this repair shop. The first time I declined their repair after paying their hefty diagnostic fee. I should have never gone back with a second item, because it turned out worse. I dont think they are dis-honest...but in my case they failed to repair my item despite assuring me that I was good to go . They over-promised and under delivered. My repair turned into a bad investment. They were unapologetic and kind of rude to me when I questioned the big labor charge...especially since the item did not work properly as promised. They dont have to worry...Ill never be back

Heres a rare gem- an old-school repair shop that also fixes the latest technology. Whether you have a tube radio from the 1930s, a mid-60s stereo console, a vacuum cleaner from the 90s or a brand-new flat screen television, the people at Northern can help you out. Complete overhauls or small repairs, as well as items for the do-it-yourself people, like new line cords and components. They also have a number of interesting displays, old radios, and more modern audio equipment, including turntables, that have been completely refurbished and are available for purchase. The best thing about Northern, though, is the service with a smile. Theyre friendly and treat you like family. Thats something that will never go out of style.

In June of 2013 I took a recent eBay purchase of a Nakamichi PA-7 and PA-1 amplifier to Northern TV & Vacuum. I asked for the PA-7 to be serviced so that I didnt need to worry about it for 20 years. They replaced all the small capacitors (not the power supply caps) for $650. At the time, I thought that was steep, but now I see other quotes that high for those repairs. And Im very happy that I had the work done. It has fantastic sound and has given me no issues in the 4-1/2 years since. They found a burnt circuit board on the PA-1 and replaced the capacitors for $250. Both amps are in daily use for hi-fi listening and audio-visual. Very satisfied with their work. And Mike is always quick in his email responses and provides good advice as to whether it is cost effective to have them repair, or go to the factory service center, or replace the unit. They are my first choice for vintage audio repair.

I really wanted to rate them higher but after I had them check, clean, lube and calibrate a 1977 TEAC 3300 Reel to Reel Tape Deck I couldnt. When I dropped it off I explained how the tape decks rubber capstan pinch roller wasnt properly engaging when you push Play. Was told that would addressed during the procedure, and also said it was fixed when I picked it up, but sadly the pinch roller still doesnt engage. Its just bound up with old grease and corrosion. Im planning on fixing it myself. My response to Northerns response: Yes that is correct I was given a full restoration quote. But as you stated when I came to pick up the unit it was in good shape and working correctly. And you didnt recommend that. Since is wasnt possible to power up and test it at that time I took your word. Doing a full service is certainly an option. But all that it needed was the capstan pinch roller serviced which would be about an hour long job. So if you had told me that the roller still wasnt working (despite me asking for it to be fixed when I dropped it off) we could have discussed this relatively simple fix, and what it would have cost.

I got Ripped Off at Northern TV!!. A real Screw Job..... I was naive and gullible, im sure. I trusted the gentleman at the counter that he would make everything alright with my daughters turntable. I felt confident that they could do some simple maintenance to her turntable with minimal expense. So i turned over my Credit card for him to swipe $70 for a diagnostic fee, and he reassured me that it shouldnt run much over, so i agreed and trusted him with my wishes that i didnt want to spend more than $100 on this, i thought i made it clear to him. I left feeling warm and fuzzy until i got a call the next day that it will run $358 to replace some tonearm motor rebuild and new belt. I flatly declined and said No thanks guys as its an inexpensive turntable and wanted my $70 deposit back. They refused to offer me any of my deposit and politely said that goes to the technician for his time. So now im out $70 bucks and have nothing to show for it. Thanks guys for taking money from a working womans family and providing nothin of value in return.

Claimed the tested biases and tube strengths, but when I asked what those numbers were, “oh we can’t provide you those”.Said they would provide a list of repair parts (did not do, even though they said they had ID’d from catalog) they provided a name of a transformer winding serviceAsked them to ID the tube compliment three pre tubes (didn’t do that) but they did tell me the tubes that I told them that the amp used.I asked for my money backI’m sure they were busy over the holidays...So was I.I’m really happy to see the customers that were able to have a good experience with them. But I should have looked these guys up before I took anything there.

I have taken 2 units to this business for repair. I was over charged, and the units were not repaired in a satisfactory manner. I am not impressed. I was charged 400.00 for one unit to have a motor rebuilt, had to take it another person, and was charged 200.00 more, with pictures of what was not done......I took a larger unit to them, paid over 900.00, and it still does not work satisfactorily. I will end up paying 3-500.00 more dollars to repair is correctly, it is now in another shop . I am not impressed, and would NEVER take another unit to them. They are over priced, and only repair the units that cost the the least, and cost them the least amount of time. The were not repaired to factory specs.

Im not typically one to post reviews about businesses, but I just cant help myself this time. I took my Magnavox Astrosonic Console Stereo to the store to be repaired on Monday. On Tuesday they called me and gave me an estimate on the cost of the repair and said it would take about 2-3 weeks. 24 hours later they called to tell me that it was ready to pick up.When I arrived at the store, they greeted me with a smile and walked me through everything they had done to the stereo, basically having fully restored it to the way it was when it left the manufacturer. It works beautifully now and I couldnt be happier with the service this store provided. They were honest, courteous, and took the time to fully explain things and answer all of my questions.I would recommend this business to anyone that needs a vintage console repaired or restored without hesitation.

My grandmother gave me a turntable a few years ago when i was in middle school. It was our families turntable since the 60/70s and it means a lot to me that i have this turntable that has been in our family for so many years. Not long after i got it (i have since graduated high school so this review is a few years overdue) I took it to Northern because ever local record shop swore that they were the best. So I took it there and I explained my problem to them and they gave me a price estimate. Well then they called me a week later and told me what that they had to order a part and then fix it and was that okay. Again, I was in middle school so they should have called my father who was an adult. Their explanation of the problem and the cost was shaky and so I agreed because in my mind, i wanted my turntable back and trusted these guys who had been called experts. So it comes time to pick it up and we get the new price. The initial extomate was around $170, which was enough to buy a working new/used turntable. The final price was around $350! These experts took advantage of someone who clearly did not have that kind of money sitting around somewhere. I had to borrow most of it from my father and pay him back later. The guys saw an opertunity to swindle and they took it.To cap it all off, I always suspected that the problem (which was the speed) hadnt been properly fixed, come to find out after getting bent over and screwed, it wasnt. The player plays too fast at the 33 1/3 speed. I wish I had been smarter then. Do not give them your business.

Not the same place it used to be. Their diagnostic fees and labor rates have become So Unreasonable to the point where the repair estimate is far more than what the audio equipment is worth. So they just pocket the $70 Diag fee knowing its not worth fixing & customer declining and they could have been more up front from the get go on what it realistically will cost to fix. Theve seen enough of the same equipment with the same consistent problems to know what potentially it will cost. Im just sorry they use thier $70 diag fees as a revenue maker for the store (Win-Win) for them instead of giving ol fashioned friendly estimates- so the customer can have some idea of what it will cost to fix instead of spending $70 for 5 minutes to have a tech look at it and sadly they know its not worth fixing. Are they Crooks or just smart business people?

Follow Up to Owners Ridiculous Response: First of all, I didnt wait in the shop on the second repair - it took them another 2+ weeks to repair it after having it for over a month the first time. I have the receipt and the pick-up dates to prove that.Secondly, yes, the unit is over 50 years old - thats why I drove 50 miles round trip to take it them - because they claimed to be experts in the field of repairing vintage audio equipment. The fact that Mike, the owner, told me to go buy another stereo instead of offering to stand behind his work speaks to his confidence and their ability to repair these units correctly. Mike likes to throw around dates regarding warranties but the fact is the unit never worked properly AGAIN after the second repair attempt. When I contacted him again in the Fall to address it his response was use your finger to get the turntable going. After $411 and two repair attempts - use my finger?? The only reason I didnt bring it back again in the fall was due to the distance from my home and because he reiterated that it wasnt under warranty. At that point, I could at least, get the thing going albeit not what one should expect after paying $411.So...ask yourself? Do you really want to go to a place that is going to charge you a ridiculous amount of money for a repair only to have them tell you after 90 days - sorry, you are out of warranty? If they feel that their work is only good enough to last 90 days then maybe they should reconsider presenting themselves as experts in their field. The car analogy is ridiculous. Generally, if someone goes into a repair facility with a symptom they rely on the experts to properly diagnose the symptom and repair it. I didnt tell him how to repair the stereo - I told him what the issue was and I relied on his supposed expertise (which is not so expert) to repair it accordingly. Again, this has been the exact same problem each time and it hasnt been repaired correctly...yet he wants to continue to charge me. Its not as if I went in for a repair to the turntable and then expected him to repair the speaker or the radio or something unrelated for free. THIS IS THE EXACT SAME ISSUE - ALL 3 TIMES.Mike likes analogies, so heres one: I just had my furnace repaired yesterday. The furnace tech said he thinks he fixed and replaced the correct part. However, he said if that wasnt the correct fix they would come out again, refund me for the part, and try something else at no additional service fee. Thats how proper and respectable service repairs work. You just dont start throwing in parts and doing things if you dont know what you are doing and continue to charge the customer each time. The only reason these guys stay in business is because there are very few people that still have the skill sets to fix audio equipment. Thats why they can hold you over a barrel, charge ridiculous rates and not stand behind their labor. Finally, the accusation of threats is ridiculous. The owner didnt like the fact that I pushed back on his refusal to stand by his service (if he is so thin-skinned he shouldnt be in the service industry). Either that or he is so tired of people complaining about his service he has little tolerance for it anymore (see other reviews). My threat was that I told him if he wasnt going to honor his work then there are other ways to handle this i.e this review, Yelp, other online reviews, small claims court, etc.********Brought HiFi in for repair to record player. Broke again in less than 90 days. Took it back in again for repair. Broke again. Contacted owner, Mike, and he told me my warranty was up. When I pushed him on the fact that this was the third time in less than 9 months he told me to go a buy a new one and not to bring it back in to him because I was challenging the integrity of his business. These people are nice and friendly at first until you challenge them on their work. Yes, they have been doing it a long time so they should know how to repair it right the first time. I would avoid going here.
